E.2 Work-related Attitudes Attitudes affect
whether someone leaves a job, how cooperative they are, whether they
present a positive work image, how they react to change, their motivation and their psychological and physical health. At work two job attitudes have the greatest potential to influence how we behave. These are (i) job satisfaction and (2) organisational commitment.
E.2.1 Job satisfaction Job satisfaction refers to the positive feelings people have toward their job. Job satisfaction is a positive state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experience. This is influenced by pay,
benefits, coworkers and the work itself amongst other factors. Things like distribution of justice, personality and our disposition and job characteristics also play a large role in determining someone's job satisfaction at work. Job satisfaction is probably the most important job attitude. Possible relationships between job satisfaction and performance a) Job satisfaction may cause performance b) Performance may cause job satisfaction c) Job satisfaction and performance may cause each other mutually d) Job satisfaction and performance are related because of another variable linking them and affecting them both. e) A link between Job satisfaction and performance may vary the strength of the relationship between the two. E.g. pay rise may increase Job satisfaction and therefore performance.
