BROWN Clifford USA jazz trumpeter and composer. Compositions include ‘Dahood’, ‘Joyspring’ and ‘Sandu’. Co-lead a band with Max Roach. Considered one of the greatest jazz players of all time. Only known footage of Clifford Brown appears in 1955 film ‘Soupy Sales’ Killed in a car crash in 1956 at the age of 26. BROWN Lawrence Born 7th March 1905. One of the great swing trombonists. Having spent so much time with the Duke Ellington's Orchestra his playing tends to be underrated. Brown’s initial solos with Ellington upset some of Duke's fans because it was feared that his virtuosity did not fit into a band where primitive effects and mutes were liberally utilized. But over time, Brown established his own place in the Ellington Orchestra.

BRUBECK Dave Born on 6 December 1920 in Concord, California, is equally distinguished as composer and pianist. His experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. In 1958, Brubeck, drummer Joe Morello, double bassist Eugene Wright, and alto sax player Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet's experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five, introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz. The group recorded and performed together continuously through 1967. In the last 20 years, he has organized several new quartets and continued to appear at the Newport, Monterey, Concord, and Kool Jazz Festivals. Brubeck performed at the White House in 1964 and 1981 and at the 1988 Moscow summit honoring the Gorbachevs. He is the recipient of four honorary degrees, the BMI Jazz Pioneer Award, and the 1988 American Eagle Award presented by the National Music Council.

CALVERT Lisa Widow of UK trumpeter Eddie Calvert. Known as ‘The Man With the Golden trumpet’. Lisa is resident in Johannesburg where she lived with Eddie before his death.
