CHERRY Don USA trumpeter. Worked with Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane. Almost always used a pocket trumpet. Recordings include: ‘Complete Communion’ (Blue Note 84226) ‘Change of the Century’ (Atlantic 81341)


CHILDERS Buddy Self taught trumpeter. First name Marion. Worked with the bands of Stan Kenton, Benny Carter Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey. Recorded with Frank Sinatra and was musical director for Frank Sinatra Jnr. Albums include ‘Just Buddies’ and ‘It’s What’s Happening Now’.

CICHOWICZ Vince USA trumpeter. Former member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for twenty two years. Professor of trumpet at Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois.

CLAYTON Buck USA trumpeter. One of the great trumpeters to emerge during the swing era. Worked with Count Basie Orchestra, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday. Recordings include: ‘The Classic Swing of Buck Clayton’ (Original Jazz Classics 1709) ‘Buck Clayton in Paris’ (Vogue 68358)

CLAYTON John Internationally respected double bassists, composer and arranger. Resident in California. Studied with Ray Brown. Worked with Count Basie Orchestra. Co-leads the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Received a grammy nomination for his composition ‘Brush This’.

COLIN Charles Performer, teacher, composer and music publisher. Founded New York Brass Conference in 1972. Was a faculty member of Columbia Teacher’s College. Colin was born on September 22, 1913 and died February 7 in Port Chester, New York, at age 86.

COLLINS Lee New Orleans trumpeter / cornetist. Born 1901 died 1960. Worked with Jerry Roll Morton, co-led the Jones-Collins Astoria ‘Hot Eight’. Toured Europe with Mezz Mezzrow.

COLLINS Mary Author. Second wife of Lee Collins, married 1950/51 former name Mary Spriggs. Survived Lee Collins.

CONN Mouthpieces USA mouthpiece and instrument company originally based in Elkhart Indiana.

COOPER Bob One of the greatest West Coast tenor sax players. Joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1945. Stayed with the band until 1951. Married singer June Cristy in 1947. Was one of the busiest players on the LA studio scene.

CORBETT Bryan UK trumpeter resident in Birmingham. Runs his own quartet.

CDs include Funk in the Deep, Simply Blue and Corbenova.

CRITCHLEY John UK trumpeter, member of the Panama Jazz Band based in Northwest England.

CROUCH Stanley USA jazz critic and author.

CULL Chris UK trumpeter. Coordinator of the Instrumental Teaching Provision for Wigan Council UK

CURRY Mouthpieces USA mouthpiece company. Last known company location in Reno, Nevada.

CUSS Andy UK trumpeter based in London. Formerly lead with Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra, National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Echoes of Ellington Orchestra. Works predominantly in London’s west-end.

DANKWORTH John UK saxophonist, composer, bandleader, author. One of UK’s best known jazz musicians. Hits include ‘African Waltz’. Married to UK vocalist Cleo Laine. Together they promote jazz at their home-based venue ‘The Stables’

DAVIES David Instrument craftsman, collector of ‘vintage’ saxophones. Resident in Leeds.

DAVIES David J. Assistant Director of Education for Wigan Council. Co-founder of Wigan International Jazz Festival.

DAVIS Miles USA trumpeter, composer and bandleader. A jazz icon. Worked with Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Benny Carter, Gil Evans. Recordings include: Kind of Blue’ (Columbia/Legacy 64935), ‘Bitches Brew’ (Columbia/Legacy 65682) ‘Sketches of Spain’ (Columbia/Legacy 65142)

DEE Simon UK disc-jockey and television personality of the late ‘60s when he hosted his own ‘prime-time’ TV show.

DELUKE R. J. American journalist with a journalism degree from Utica College of Syracuse University. Spent many years as a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and some magazines. Writes regular jazz articles for All About Jazz, the Albany (NY) Times-Union and also for Downbeat.

DICKINSON John UK trumpeter formerly with Manchester based Hallé Orchestra. Head of Brass and Woodwind Department at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester (Retired July 2002)

DONELAN Heather UK trumpeter. Attended Fred Longworth High School. Student at Salford University and member of Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra

DONNELLY John UK trumpeter (Scotland) Former member of Maynard Ferguson’s British band of the late ‘60s.

DORHAM Kenny American be-bop trumpeter. Worked with Billy Eckstine, Mercer Ellington, Lionel Hampton. Recordings include: ‘Whistle Stop’ (Blue Note 29978) ‘Jazz Contrasts’ (Original Jazz Classics 028)

DORSEY Tommy USA bandleader, trombonist and composer. Hit records included ‘On the Sunnyside of the Street’ I’m Getting Sentimental Over You’

DOUGLAS Dave USA trumpeter. Worked with Horace Silver, Anthony Braxton, Kenny Werner. Recordings include: ‘Five’ (Soul Note 121276) ‘Soul on Soul’ (RCA 63603) ‘Convergence’ (Soul Note 121316)

DOWNEY Alan UK trumpeter, composer and arranger. London based. Member of the Maynard Ferguson’s British band of the late ‘60s. Worked with Louis Bellson ‘Big Band Explosion’, ‘BBC Big Band’, ‘Nelson’s Column’s Big Band’ His compositions include ‘Give it One’


DUNSCOMB Recognised in the USA and internationally as one of the


J. Richard leading figures in jazz music and jazz education. Was elected to the International Association for Jazz education Hall of Fame in 1992. He is active as a clinician, author, guest conductor, adjudicator and consultant. Resident in Chicago.

DUNSCOMB Marcia Composer, educator, author and pianist. Printed works include Melody Maker, Evolution of Jazz and Anatomy of Music. Dunscomb has been one of the foremost pioneers in the field of teaching jazz and improvisation to young children. She has presented for many organizations, including the National Piano Foundation, the Stan Kenton Summer Jazz Camps, and IAJE

DROVER Martin UK trumpeter, member of Maynard Ferguson’s British band of the late ‘60s.

EDISON Harry ‘Sweets’ USA trumpeter. One of the world’s great jazz soloists Featured member of the Count Basie Orchestra. Also featured on recordings with Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra /Nelson Riddle and many more.

Recordings include: ‘Just Friends’ (Black and Blue 59106) ‘Simply Sweets’ (Original Jazz Classics 903)

ELDRIDGE Roy USA trumpeter. Known as ‘Little Jazz’ worked with Count Basie Orchestra, Norman Grantz’s ‘Jazz at the Phil’, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Fletcher Henderson, Gene Krupa. Recordings include: ‘Little Jazz’ (Columbia 45275) ‘After You’ve Gone’ (GRP/ Decca 605) ‘Happy Time’ (Original Jazz Classics 628)

ENDSLEY Gerald USA mouthpiece expert. Denver based. Author of ‘A Comparative Mouthpiece Guide’. Also active as a soloist, composer, author and publisher.

ENGELBRIGHT Scott. USA trumpeter. Former lead player with Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau. Almost amazing as his range was his ability to play unthinkable notes while exhibiting no visible effort

ELLINGTON Edward ‘Duke’ USA bandleader, pianist, composer and arranger. Hits include ‘Solitude’ ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ ‘Sophisticated Lady’ Worked closely on compositions and arrangements with Billy Strayhorn.

ELLIS William UK photographer. Specialist in jazz photography. Resident in Thelwall, Cheshire. Exhibitions at North Sea Jazz Festival, Wigan International Jazz Festival, IAJE (New York) Capetown. Has photographed all around the world including Cuba, Canada, South Africa and USA

ESHELBY Paul UK trumpeter. Studied at Leeds College of Music. Worked for many years with the BBC Big Band. Musical director of National Youth Jazz Orchestra II. Endorsee of Yamaha trumpet and flugelhorn.

EVANS Bill Pianist. Born August 16, 1929, in Plainfield, NJ Died September 15, 1980, in New York, NY. first album was New Jazz Conceptions; in 1956, which featured the first recording of his most loved composition, "Waltz for Debby". Worked with some of the top names in jazz including Charles Mingus, Art Farmer, Stan Getz, Oliver Nelson, Jim Hall, George Russell, Shelley Manne, Toots Theielmans, Kai Winding /J.J. Johnson and Hal McKusick. In the 70s, he recorded extensively, primarily trio and occasionally solo piano as well two memorable dates with singer Tony Bennett. Recorded several quintet albums under his own name. His last trio was formed in 1978, featuring the incomparably sensitive Marc Johnson on bass and drummer Joe LaBarbera

EWAZEN Eric Composer. Born 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio. Received a B.M. at Eastman School of Music, and M.M. and D.M.A. degrees from The Juilliard School, he is the recipient of numerous composition awards and prizes. His works have been commissioned and performed by many soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestras in the U.S. and overseas. Commissions for the 2003-04 season included a Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble premiered by Allen Vizzutti in Reno, Nevada in March 2004

EZZARD Bert UK trumpeter. Former member of the Ted Heath Orchestra, Probably best-known for his duet work on ‘Stardust’ with Bobby Pratt. Retired and resident in Whitby.

FADDIS Jon USA trumpeter. Disciple of Dizzy Gillespie. Well known for his ability in the extreme high register. Worked with Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton. Albums include ‘Into the Faddisphere’, ‘Hornucopia’ (Epic 46958) ‘Legacy’ (Concord 4291)

FARMER Art USA trumpeter. Resident in Vienna for many years. Played mostly flugelhorn. Worked with Horace Silver, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan. During last few years of his life played the flumpet. Recordings include: ‘Warm Valley’ (Concord Jazz 4212) ‘Modern Art’ (Blue Note 84459) ‘Something to Live For’ (Contemporary 14029)
