SAUNDERS Carl Los Angeles based trumpeter. Born 1942. Worked with Stan Kenton Orchestra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra. Saunders, Paul Anka, Robert Goulet, Si Zentner, Harry James, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman and Charlie Barnet. Since 1984 has worked with the big bands of Bill Holman and Bob Florence.

SCHILKE Mouthpieces USA mouthpiece company also manufacturers of trumpets. Based in Melrose Park, Illinois

SCHILKE Renold Trumpet and trumpet mouthpiece expert. Worked with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and WGN Radio Symphony. Taught at Northwestern University, DePaul University and Roosevelt University.

SCHOENBURG Loren USA saxophonist, music educator, worked with Benny Goodman Orchestra. Resident in New York

SCOTT Bon Joined AC/DC in 1974 replacing Dave Evans. Bon was with AC/DC for five years until his death in 1980.

SEVERINSEN Doc USA trumpeter. Worked with Charlie Barnet, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman. In 1962 joined the Tonight Show Orchestra and became musical director in 1967. Recordings include: ‘Tonight Show Band’ (Amherst 3311), ‘Once More with Feeling!’ (Amherst 94405)

SEYMOUR Gene USA Author. Books include ‘Jazz - the Great American Art’

SHANK Bud USA tenor saxophonist. Has been am important part of the International jazz scene for over 50 years. Played with bands of Charlie Barnet, Stand Kenton and the Lighthouse All Stars.

SHAW Artie USA clarinetist and bandleader.

SHEW Bobby California based trumpeter and music educator. Played lead for Buddy Rich Orchestra, Louis Bellson Big Band, Toshiko Akiyoshi and many others. Recordings include ‘Outstanding in his Field’ (Inner City 1077) ‘Trumpets No End’ recorded with Chuck Findlay (Delos 4003) ‘Playing with Fire’ (MAMA 1013).

SNEIDER Maria USA composer and bandleader. Awarded a Gil Evans Composition Commission by the International Association for Jazz Education.

SNELL Howard UK trumpeter and music educator. Formerly with the London Symphony Orchestra. Author of ‘The Trumpet’

SOLOFF Lew USA trumpeter based in New York. Member of ‘60s supergroup ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ also worked for Maynard Ferguson, Gil Evans, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Recordings include: ‘But Beautiful’ (Evidence 22005), ‘Farewell’ (Projazz 680) ‘Reunion’ (Sweet Basil 7301)

SOUNDS 2000 UK Rehearsal band based in the Northwest of England. Directed by saxophonist Jimmy Ashcroft.

SPOWART Gavin UK trumpeter based in Perth Scotland. In the ‘80s played for Eric Delaney’s ‘Little Big Band’, Freddie Star and Joe Longthorne.

STAFFORD Terell USA trumpeter. Worked with Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Cedar Walton, McCoy Tyner, Mingus Big Band, Clayton Brothers Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Recordings include ‘Centripetal Force’ (Candid 79718) ‘Fields of Gold’ (Nagel-Heyer 2005) ‘Present Tense’ with Bobby Watson (Columbia 32400)

STAMM Marvin USA trumpeter. Worked with Stan Kenton. Woody Herman, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Bob Mintzer, Benny Goodman (1974-76). Spent most of his career since 1966 as a studio musician. Recordings include: ‘Bop Boy’ (Music Masters 65065) ‘Mystery Man’ (Music Masters (65085)

STEELE-PERKINS Crispin UK trumpeter specialising in natural trumpet

STEWART Rex USA trumpet player. Worked with Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington. Film appearance in ‘Rendez-Vous de Julliet’ (1949) Recordings include: ‘Trumpet Jive’ (Prestige 24119) ‘Late Date’ (Simitar 56132) ‘The Irrepressible Rex Stewart’ (Jazzology 36)

WILSHER Paul UK trumpeter studying at University of Salford. Member of Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. Originates from Essex.


WINDING Kai Born 18th May 1922. Died 7th May 1983. Was one of the finest jazz trombonists in the world and a founding father of be-bop. Worked with Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Sonny Stitt, Billy Eckstein, Neal Hefti, Woody Herman, Chris Connor, Sylvia Syms. Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton. A member of the nonet featured on the historic THE BIRTH OF THE COOL (Capitol/1949).

WISE Alan USA trumpeter. Played lead trumpet for Maynard Ferguson during late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

Wright & Rounds Liverpool based music publishing company. Produced a cornet / brass tutor that proved to be extremely popular especially within brass band circles.

YAMAHA Japanese instrument manufacturing company. Also located in USA.

YATES Jim UK amateur trumpeter. Based in Wigan. Works with Sound 2000 rehearsal band directed by Jim Ashcroft.

YOUNG Lester USA tenor saxophonist. Born 1909 died 1959. Featured in the film ‘Jammin The Blues’. Worked with Count Basie, Andy Kirk, Fletcher Henderson and Billie Holiday. Also worked with Jazz at the Philharmonic.

ZAWINUL Joe Austrian born keyboard player and composer. Formed Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. Worked with Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis. Recordings include My People, Lost Tribes, Faces and Places, Stories of the Danube and Black Water.

ZOTTOLA USA mouthpiece company. Last know company location Port Chester, New York.
