GETZ Stan Born 1927 Died 1991. First made his name in the 40s with Woody Herman's Second Herd. One of the most famous numbers he recorded with the band was the Ralph Burns tune Autumn Serenade. Worked with many musicians including Al Haig, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Jimmy Raney and Horace Silver. In 1958 he moved to Europe and worked mainly with European musicians. In 1961 moved back to New York. great Getz albums include: Apasionado, The Steamer, Best of the Roost Years, Best of the West Coast Sessions and People Time

GOODWIN Gordon California based composer. A three-time Emmy Award winner and a multi-Grammy nominee. Formed the Big Phat Band playing his own compositions and arrangements. His film writing includes Bad Boys II,” “The Majestic,” “Con Air,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “Enemy of the State,” “Remember The Titans,” “Star Trek Nemesis," "Armageddon," and the classic cult film “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.”

GOYKOVICH Dusko Trumpeter. Born: Oct 14, 1931 in Jajce, Yugoslavia. Recorded for Enja, Visited U.S. for the first time with Marshall Brown's International Youth Band (playing at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival) attended Berklee (1961-1963) Played with the orchestras of Maynard Ferguson (1963-1964) and Woody Herman (1964-1966) Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band (1968-73) Slide Hampton (1974-1975). Miles Davis is his main influence.

HAYDN Michael Austrian composer Born 1737 Died 1806. Younger brother of Joseph and teacher of Weber. He was musical director to the Archbishop of Salzburg for over forty years.

HIRT Al Trumpeter. Born in New Orlenas in 1922. Received 21 Grammy nominations (winning in 1964 for his signature song, "Java") and 50 albums in a career that spanned five decades. Had his own TV variety show. He also ran a nightclub in New
Orleans' French Quarter for 22 years. Died 27th April 1999.

HITCHEN David UK trumpeter. Formerly with Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. Worked in Monte Carlo and Caribbean. Working with UK bands including Pasadena Roof Orchestra, New Squadronnaires, Andy Prior Orchestra and Greg Francis Orchestras.

HOLDEN Dave (Big Band) UK amateur trumpeter, musical director of rehearsal band and college lecturer.

HOLMAN Bill Saxophonist, pianist, composer and arranger. Born 21st May 1927. In 1952 he began his association with Stan Kenton, for whom he wrote and played for many years. During the '50s, he was also active in the West Coast jazz movement, playing in small bands led by Shorty Rogers and Shelly Manne, and co-leading a quintet with Mel Lewis in 1958. Written for many artists including Louie Bellson, Count Basie, Terry Gibbs, Woody Herman, Bob Brookmeyer, Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, Doc Severinsen, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Carmen MacRae, Mel Torme, Woody Herman, Anita O'Day, Sarah Vaughn, June Christy and the Fifth Dimension. MAGGIO Louis Legendary trumpet teacher that developed a system for teaching using pedal tones. A book was produced in 1968 by Carlton Macbeth titled the Louis Maggio System in which he states ‘Louis Maggio, as a result of his total dedication to music and to his students, was more than just a great teacher, he became a way of life for all who came his way’.

MONK Thelonious Born 1917 Died 1982. American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, Monk is considered one of the most important, and eccentric, figures in modern jazz. He spent most of his life in New York City, playing in nightclubs; in the 1940s he was one of the first players of bebop. Compositions include, Straight No Chaser, Round Midnight and Monk’s Mood.

MOZART L. Born in Augsburg in 1719 died in Salzburg in 1787. Violinist of high reputation. Composer of many symphonies and much chamber music. Author of famous ‘Violin School’ later translated into various languages including English in 1948. Father of Wolfgang Amadeus.

MULLIGAN Gerry Baritone saxophonist, composer and bandleader. In 1952, formed his first piano-less quartet, with Chet Baker on trumpet. He became one of the most known of the California cool jazz movement. Artist in residence at Miami University in 1974.

OLSEN R. Dale One of the foremost authorities in the world in the fields of trumpet design, testing and performance. From 1961 to 1968 served as director of research for F.E. Olds and Son Inc. and acted as a consultant to several major firms.

ODDO John USA pianist, composer and arranger. Worked with Woody Herman Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney, Scott Hamilton and Warren Vache.

PARDUBA USA mouthpiece company. Known particularly for the ‘double-cup’ mouthpiece design endorsed by Harry James. Based in New York as early as 1915. Also played by Ziggy Elman, Ray Anthony.

PARKER Charlie USA saxophonist. Born 20th August 1920. Nicknamed ‘Bird’ and ‘Yardbird’. Worked with Jay McShann, Earl Hines, Billy Eckstine. Parker’s collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie startled the jazz world – together they helped to form and lauch be-bop. Their compositions include Groovin' High, Dizzy Atmosphere, Shaw 'Nuff, Salt Peanuts and Hot House. Many great names worked with Parker including Miles Davis. PASTORIUS Jaco USA electric bass player. Born 1st December 1951. Died 21st September 1987. Worked with Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, Blood Sweat and Tears and Joni Mitchell. From 1980 to 1984, he toured and recorded with his own band, the innovative Word Of Mouth.

PARKE Jeff USA mouthpiece designer. Founder and owner, along with his wife Diane, of the Parke Mouthpiece Centre based in Van Nuys California. As a player toured with Maynard Ferguson, Glenn Miller, Paul Anka and Lisa Minnelli. Jeff began his mouthpiece business in 1982.

PEPPER Art USA alto saxophonist. Born: Sep 1, 1925 in Gardena, CA.


Died: Jun 1, 1982 in Panorama City, CA. Worked with Benny Carter and Stan Kenton Orchestras. Recorded with Buddy Rich. In his later years he was influenced by John Coltrane.

PERKINS Bill One of "coolest" of the West Coast tenor players of the 1950s. In his later years was influenced by John Coltrane and modernized his style. Also played baritone, alto, soprano, and flute. Worked with Stan Kenton Orchestra, Woody Herman, and Lighthouse All Stars. Died 9th August 2003 age 79.

PERRY Maurice UK trumpeter, retired professional. Resident in Wigan. Plays lead for the Ronnie Moore rehearsal band.

PURBROOK Colin UK pianist, composer, arranger and musical director. Also played clarinet, trumpet, trombone and bass. Died 5th February 1999. Purbrook was rated as an outstanding character who enlivened the British Music Scene.

RADER Don USA trumpeter now resident in Australia. Worked with Woody Herman Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson, Frank Sinatra and many more.

RADTKE Gary Founder of the GR Technologies mouthpiece company. He has an extensive background in both musical performance and education, and manufacturing and design.

REEVES Bob USA mouthpiece expert and owner of mouthpiece company based in Los Angeles

RICH Buddy USA drummer and bandleader. One of the greatest drummers of all time. Theme tune ‘Rain on the Roof’ Albums include ‘Big Swing Face’ ‘Class of 78’

RODERICK Stan UK trumpeter. One of the busiest players of the ‘50s and ‘60s.

ROGERS Shorty USA trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader. ‘Shorty Rogers and The Giants.’ Worked with Woody Herman. ROHNER Traugott Founder of the Instrumentalist magazine. Taught in high schools Minnesota, North Carolina and Illinois and as a faculty member a Northwestern University.

ROUFFIGNAC Con Fanatical trumpet enthusiast. Resident of Wigan and member of Wigan Jazz Club. Could identify almost any trumpet and mouthpiece from a photograph.

ROSOLINO Frank USA trombonist. One of the top trombonists of the 1950s. Performed with Stan Kenton Orchestra, Supersax, Gene Krupa, Lighthouse All Stars and many more.
