Imperialism (“SMH CDL”): Taft

Exact Plan Text: My partner and I advocate an engagement of discussion in this debate space of current imperialism and the two countries it stems from – the US and China.

Advantages/Harms (with explanation):

Economic and Diplomatic engagement between China and the US is flawed. It is rooted in imperialism, violence, and militarism, leading to various and magnitudinous impacts, such as environmental destruction, territorial disputes, eternal war, and extinction.

Solvency Mechanisms:

Mindset shift through discussion.

Joint Vision Group (“Fill My Eyes With That Double Vision”): Northside College Prep

Exact Plan Text: The United States Federal Government should establish a joint Vision Group with the People’s Republic of China to analyze and act upon global megatrends.

Advantages/Harms with explanation (all potential advantages listed):

Economy: The Vision Group allows for the analysis of global megatrends, specifically the trends of the global economy. By analyzing the economy we are able to better rebalance the global economy and combat protectionism by allowing for new forms of trade deals allowing for broader free trade agreements bolstering the global economy.

Multilateralism: Solves for multilateral institutions by creating new and more effective institutions from the older groups from world war two. We can allow for rethinking the global system in the context of long-term trends and global challenges. This allows us to generate a global system that is fair, inclusive, open, and rule based. Allowing for this rethinking of global institutions allows for us to build up environmental sustainability, address demographic challenges, prevent proliferation, and manage increasing interdependence.

Natural Disasters: Solves for natural disaster awareness by creating effective response mechanisms and allowing us to be able to be prepared by researching these natural disasters. We can rethink our national responses to common challenges and threats such as natural disasters to avoid “each nation for itself” actions. Extreme weather events or other unpredictable events could be game changers, changing the trajectories of global political efforts to deal with the consequences of climate change.

Global Drift: Status quo cooperation is zero sum, and hinders our ability to solve for global megatrends, as well as making cooperation between China and the United States terminally ineffective (absent the plan). The plan prevents zero sum cooperation through a bilateral vision group dialogue, which allows for an effective analysis of climate change and resource scarcity.

Instability: Vision groups provide a key method of dialogue between the United States and China to allow for discussion of instability and regional tensions across the globe. This is specifically key to address instability and tensions in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific region, where both countries play key roles in. These dialogues allow for conflict de-escalation and prevents multiple scenarios of nuclear war.

Climate: Climate change is one of the most omnipresent issues facing humanity today. The creating of a vision group allows for China and the United States to discuss effective mitigation, adaptation, and management strategies for climate change, which allows for a prevention of several different effects of climate change, preventing extinction and structural violence.
Solvency Mechanisms:

A Vision Group is comprised of experts who would meet regularly to discuss global megatrends and provide a strategic foresight and a vision to guide US-China relations. There are 5 types of megatrends currently: globalization, demographic changes, urbanization, technology changes, and climate change sustainability. The Fingar evidence argues for non-zero sum cooperation in order to prevent an “every country for itself” mentality in international relations which creates comprehensive solutions to problems even if there are problems in a different area of the relationship. Vision Groups have the ability to create policy recommendations that are pushed by the US and China, as well as allowing for a bilateral dialogue between American and Chinese officials who will analyze several aspects of megatrends and their respective causes and effects.
