The Main Event #1 (2/5/1988, Indianapolis, IN)

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: HONKY TONK MAN vs. RANDY “Macho Man” SAVAGE Savage was booked to go over here, but Honky Tonk threatened to head to the NWA and take the belt with him. Vince changed the plan, and to keep Savage happy, Vince gave him the World Title at WrestleMania IV, which was supposed to go to Ted DiBiase, who I’m guessing got a ton of money for going along with this.

WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. ANDRE THE GIANT The wildest title change in history that didn’t take place in Montreal. André goes for the pin, Hogan kicks out at one, but referee Dave Hebner (we think) counts to three anyway! André forfeits the belt to DiBiase, who later gets stripped of it, and as they leave to celebrate, the real Dave Hebner runs to ringside, exposing the referee for the match as an imposter who DiBiase hired to get plastic surgery! (Of course, it’s actually Dave’s twin brother Earl.) Hulk, Vince, and Jesse all do fantastic work to put over this weird but one-of-a-kind angle.

ONE HOUR
The Main Event #2 (2/3/1989, Milwaukee, WI)

MEGA-POWERS vs. TWIN TOWERS Six months of buildup comes to a head. Elizabeth takes a great bump and is knocked unconscious. Randy Savage doesn’t seem to care at all but Hulkster is mortified by the horrendous tragedy and carries Elizabeth’s body/corpse to the first aid station, where he cries and prays for help for a good five minutes while Savage gets dismantled by the Towers. He finally goes back to the ring and Savage slaps him in the face, leaving Hogan to face the Towers himself. He wins anyway, then gets attacked by Savage in the back to set up WrestleMania V’s main event. Time to rant: We know Hogan lost on last year’s special, but he shouldn’t have made up for it. He HAD to lose here if they really wanted the angle put over. Hogan beating the Towers by himself makes Savage look like a weak link, and it gives the impression that Hogan doesn’t need him as a friend or partner anyway. A loss would have made Savage even further over as a heel (leaving Hogan, his trusting friend, behind when Hogan needed him). Furthermore, Boss Man was going to be Hogan’s first main event after winning the title, so a Hogan loss would have established bigger heat for the main event at WMV, and it would have made Boss Man look like an even bigger threat to Hogan in the process. Oh well, what do I know?

HERCULES vs. “Million Dollar Man” TED DIBIASE Strange that they didn’t save this for WrestleMania…

ONE HOUR
The Main Event #3 (2/23/1990, Detroit, MI)

WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. “Macho King” RANDY SAVAGE with guest referee James “Buster” Douglas.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: ULTIMATE WARRIOR vs. DINO BRAVO Earthquake attacks Warrior until Hulk Hogan makes the save, but Warrior is not exactly grateful for the help.

ONE HOUR
The Main Event #4 (11/23/1990, Fort Wayne, IN)

WORLD TITLE: ULTIMATE WARRIOR vs. “Million Dollar Man” TED DIBIASE

NIKOLAI VOLKOFF vs. SGT. SLAUGHTER Match never starts, as Slaughter attacks Volkoff with a riding crop before the bell, and Jim Duggan makes the save.

BIG BOSS MAN vs. MISTER PERFECT

Playboy” BUDDY ROSE ENDORSES THE “BLOW-AWAY” DIET PLAN in an incredibly weird skit.

TITO SANTANA vs. RICK MARTEL

Historical footnote for what it’s worth: If you’re wondering why this Friday night special has the “Saturday Night’s…” banners all over the arena, this show was indeed supposed to air in place of Saturday Night Live for 90 minutes on Thanksgiving weekend. One of the matches taped and not aired is a Hart Foundation vs. Rockers Best-of-Three-Falls where the Rockers won the belts in a match that, according to Bret Hart, ended up being so surprisingly atrocious that Vince agreed not to air it as a personal favor to all involved, and with only one hour of matches to air, NBC agreed to air the special on Friday night in primetime instead.

Slaughter.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE, STEEL CAGE: MAGNIFICENT MURACO vs. “Superfly” JIMMY SNUKA The match we have to thank for making Mick Foley consider wrestling as a career. To be honest though, the actual match isn’t that great. The high spot at the end saves its reputation.

Superfly” JIMMY SNUKA & “Golden Boy” ARNOLD SKAALAND vs. MAGNIFICENT MURACO & CAPTAIN LOU ALBANO from the 12/26/83 MSG show.

THREE HOURS
Piledriver: The Music Video (Coliseum Video)
PILEDRIVER- KOKO B. WARE Set at a construction sight, and there’s something disturbing about seeing Hulk Hogan operating a cement gun, holding it at his waist while we hear a song about being in love. Also, somebody was drunk when they shot the special in-ring footage of Koko for this video. We hear about how love resembles a piledriver as we see footage of Koko performing brainbuster suplexes.

HONKY TONK MAN- HONKY TONK MAN This one could have had a LOT more effort put into it.

DEMOLITION- RICK DERRINGER The producer’s explanation of what Demolition wanted for this video is classic; the video on the other hand…well…It’s footage of Demolition beating up jobbers, along with explosion footage from old movies.

ROCK & ROLL HOOCHIE KOO- RICK DERRINGER & MEAN GENE OKERLUND Very tasteful on the part of the WWF in the pre-Attitude era. The song is performed with its original lyrics, instead of something a little more, um, friendly. I’m sure parents everywhere were thrilled to hear Junior listening to this cute ballad about “grass” and “pussy.”

GIRLS IN CARS- ROBBIE DUPREE Wow…uh…er…wow. I’ve never felt so gay after seeing so many bikini-clad women.

JIVE SOUL BRO- SLICK A good song once you get past all the close-ups of Slick’s lips, and the footage of Slick eating fried chicken. To quote my friend Jeremy, “People are burning in hell right now for less than what we just watched.” (He said this about the “Hoochie-Koo” video, too.)

STAND BACK- VINCE MCMAHON No, no, this isn’t what Chris Jericho brought out from the vault. Vince got his ego in check by the time production for this video rolled around, so we still get him singing the song, but now it’s a video tribute to André the Giant.

IF YOU ONLY KNEW- WWF SUPERSTARS

RODDY PIPER & “DR. D” DAVID SCHULTZ vs. SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA & ANDRÉ THE GIANT

PIPER’S PIT WITH GUEST FRANK WILLIAMS This was a big deal when it first happened, as Piper mocks Frank for being a jobber (not said but implied) and then attacking him.

ONE AND A HALF HOURS
The 1988 Royal Rumble (1/24/1988, Hamilton, ONT)

RICKY “The Dragon” STEAMBOAT vs. “Ravishing” RICK RUDE Notable only for a REALLY annoying fan in the front row who has elected to bring along her own megaphone for tonight’s event.

DINO BRAVO sets the world bench press record with help from Jesse Ventura in one of the most boring segments you’ll ever see.

WOMEN’S TAG TEAM TITLE, 2 OUT OF THREE FALLS: GLAMOUR GIRLS vs. JUMPING BOMB ANGELS

HULK HOGAN & ANDRÉ THE GIANT sign the contract to wrestle in the main event of, uh, “The Main Event.”

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with “Outlaw” Ron Bass, Killer Bees, Dino Bravo, “Dangerous” Danny Davis, Hart Foundation, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Hillbilly Jim, Sam Houston, Junkyard Dog, “The Rock” Don Muraco, One Man Gang, King Harley Race, “The Natural” Butch Reed, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Tito Santana, Bolsheviks, and Ultimate Warrior.

2 OUT OF THREE FALLS: YOUNG STALLIONS vs. ISLANDERS Not a great match, but worth watching because Vince takes a few moments during the first fall to take Jesse to task for how boring the weightlifting segment earlier was.

THREE HOURS
The 1989 Royal Rumble (1/15/1989, Houston, TX)

BEST OF THREE FALLS: “Hacksaw” JIM DUGGAN & HART FOUNDATION vs. DINO BRAVO & FABULOUS ROUGEAU BROTHERS

WOMEN’S TITLE: ROCKIN’ ROBIN vs. JUDY MARTIN

SUPER POSEDOWN: ULTIMATE WARRIOR vs. “Ravishing” RICK RUDE

KING TITLE: KING HAKU vs. HARLEY RACE Harley is a face for his last WWF match; this is also from the extremely short-lived angle where Bobby Heenan wears a microphone during his matches.

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Twin Towers, Brainbusters, Andre the Giant, Big John Studd, Powers of Pain, “Outlaw” Ron Bass, Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, Bad News Brown, Demolition, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, “Rugged” Ronnie Garvin, Mr. Perfect, Hercules, Hulk Hogan, Honky Tonk Man, Rockers, Strike Force, Bushwhackers, Red Rooster, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and Koko B. Ware.

THREE HOURS
The 1990 Royal Rumble (1/21/1990, Orlando, FL)

BUSHWHACKERS vs. FABULOUS ROUGEAUS Such a nice going away present for a hard-working talented tag team that never got the superpush they could have had.

BRUTUS “The Barber” BEEFCAKE vs. GENIUS Brutus cuts Genius’s hair prematurely, leading to a Mister Perfect attack setting up the Wrestlemania VI match. Notable for a “Line of the Year” candidate from Jesse Ventura during a “Faggot” chant from the crowd.

SUBMISSION MATCH: “Rugged” RONNIE GARVIN vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE The beginning of the end for both men. Ronnie would go on to be a Jobber to the Stars following this, and Greg was put in Rhythm & Blues to job to all the face tag teams, then turn face himself and job to all the heels.

THE BROTHER LOVE SHOW with Sapphire and Queen Sherri, setting up the mixed-tag match at Wrestlemania VI.

Hacksaw” JIM DUGGAN vs. BIG BOSS MAN

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Hulk Hogan, Akeem, Powers of Pain, Dino Bravo, Bad News Brown, Demolition, “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Canadian Earthquake, Colossal Connection, Hart Foundation, Mr. Perfect, Hercules, Honky Tonk Man, Rockers, Rick “The Model” Martel, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Red Rooster, Dusty Rhodes, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Ravishing Rick Rude, Tito Santana, “Macho King” Randy Savage, Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Ultimate Warrior, and Koko B. Ware. Hulk pulls a political move and wins the Rumble, instead of Perfect, who had been booked to win literally months before this. If it was up to me, neither man would have won. My booking would have had Warrior “accidentally” eliminate Hogan and go on to win to build up Wrestlemania VI.

THREE HOURS
The 1991 Royal Rumble (1/19/1991, Miami, FL)

ROCKERS vs. ORIENT EXPRESS

BIG BOSSMAN vs. BARBARIAN

KOKO B. WARE vs. MOUNTIE

WORLD TITLE: ULTIMATE WARRIOR vs. SGT. SLAUGHTER The biggest tanked angle comes to fruition as Sarge, after a half-assed heel turn, mid-card feud with Nikolai Volkoff, and minimal buildup aside from reminding us he likes Saddam Hussein, wins the World Title with Randy Savage’s help, effectively killing the WWF’s big plans to have 100,000 people in the LA Memorial Coliseum.

DUSTY & DUSTIN RHODES vs. “Million Dollar Man” TED DIBIASE & VIRGIL The slowest-burning slow-burn angle ever (3 ½ years!) finally pays off as Virgil loses it over DiBiase’s bullying and knocks him unconscious with the Million Dollar Belt.

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Hulk Hogan, Dino Bravo, Bushwhackers, Demolition, Shane Douglas, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Earthquake, Haku, Hart Foundation, Mr. Perfect, Power & Glory, Nasty Boys, Legion of Doom, Rick “The Model” Martel, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Tito Santana, Saba Simba, Davey Boy Smith, Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Tugboat, Undertaker, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, “Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich, Warlord, and “Macho King” Randy Savage, who no-shows. OK, OK, THIS year it was right for Hogan to win.

THREE HOURS
The 1992 Royal Rumble (1/19/1992, Albany, NY)

COUNTDOWN TO THE ROYAL RUMBLE Sean Mooney hosts 23 minutes of flashbacks and pre-match interviews leading up to the big show.

NEW FOUNDATION vs. ORIENT EXPRESS The New Foundation…talk about a trivia question.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: THE MOUNTIE vs. ROWDY RODDY PIPER Up to this point in my wrestling fandom, this was the best day of my life; Hot Rod was the guy that got me hooked on wrestling, and tonight, he finally wins a WWF title belt!

BUSHWHACKERS vs. BEVERLY BROTHERS Bobby Heenan’s old “second banana,” Jamison, is in the Bushwhackers’ corner.

TAG TEAM TITLE: NATURAL DISASTERS vs. LEGION OF DOOM The outcome of this match was a pretty clear sign that LOD isn’t to be taken seriously anymore.

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Barbarian, Berzerker, Big Boss Man, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Ric Flair, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Haku, Hercules, Hulk Hogan, Sid Justice, Rick “The Model” Martel, Shawn Michaels, Col. Mustafa, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Repo Man, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, “Nasty Boy” Jerry Sags, “El Matador” Tito Santana, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Irwin R. Schyster, Skinner, Sgt. Slaughter, Davey Boy Smith, Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Undertaker, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Virgil, Nikolai Volkoff, “Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich, and Warlord; Ric Flair’s hour of glory, as he lasts one hour to win the vacant WWF World Title, while financial consultant Bobby Heenan delivers the best color commentary performance of his life. Woooooooooooooo!

3 ½ HOURS
The 1998 Royal Rumble (1/18/1998, San Jose, CA)

VADER vs. THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS GOLDUST In the Vince Russo era, how many feuds can you think of that ended with the face getting a clean win over the heel?

MIDGET MADNESS! MAX MINI, MOSAIC, & NOVA vs. BATTALION, EL TORITO, & TARANTULA with guest referee Sunny.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: ROCKY MAIVIA vs. KEN SHAMROCK This feud did a great job getting The Rock over as a major heel; he was second only to the Honky Tonk Man in finding screwy ways to hang onto the belt.

TAG TEAM TITLE: NEW AGE OUTLAWS vs. LEGION OF DOOM

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Steve Blackman, Blackjack Bradshaw, Tom Brandi, The Nation of Domination, Cactus Jack, Chainsaw Charlie, The D.O.A., The Godwinns, Goldust, Owen Hart, Mark Henry, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Honkytonk Man, Jeff Jarrett, Ahmed Johnson, Kurrgan, Dude Love, Rocky Maivia, Mankind, Marvelous Marc Mero, Headbangers, Ken Shamrock, and Savio Vega. Cute booking, as Mick Foley does all three of his gimmicks during the hourlong bout; Rocky, already having pissed off the fans by hanging onto the I-C belt in a screwjob, makes them even angrier by lasting over 40 minutes; that’s the kind of booking that makes a wrestler a star. Stone Cold Steve Austin sets up his era with a Rumble win, much to the delight of Mike Tyson, a huge fan of “Cold Stone” in attendance tonight.

WORLD TITLE, CASKET MATCH: SHAWN MICHAELS vs. UNDERTAKER

3 ½ HOURS
The 1999 Royal Rumble: “No Chance in Hell” (1/24/1999, Anaheim, CA)

ROAD DOGG” JESSE JAMMES vs. BIG BOSS MAN

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: KEN SHAMROCK vs. BILLY GUNN

EUROPEAN TITLE: X-PAC vs. GANGREL

STRAP MATCH, WOMEN’S TITLE: SABLE vs. LUNA Tori, being introduced as a “fan” in love with Sable, jumps the railing to cost Luna the match.

WORLD TITLE “I QUIT” MATCH: MANKIND vs. THE ROCK Mankind takes the sickest bumps imaginable in this insane match.

THE ROYAL RUMBLE with Vince McMahon, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Big Boss Man, Steve Blackman, Blue Meanie, D-Lo Brown, D-Generation X, Droz, Edge, Gangrel, Gillberg, Godfather, Goldust, the Oddities, Owen Hart, Mark Henry, Jeff Jarrett, Kane, Mabel, Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, Tiger Ali Singh, Al Snow, Test, and Val Venis; THE WORST ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH EVER!!!

3 HOURS
Saturday Night’s Main Event #1: “Happy Mother’s Day!” (5/10/1985, Nassau County, Long Island)

RICKY STEAMBOAT & THE U.S. EXPRESS vs. GEORGE “The Animal” STEELE, NIKOLAI VOLKOFF, & IRON SHEIK Steele loses the match and his partners attack him afterward, turning him face and indirectly leading to some of the dumbest angles of all time.

PIPER’S PIT with guest Paul Orndorff, whom Piper blames for the team’s loss at WrestleMania. Piper and Bob Orton gang up on Orndorff, but Mister T makes the save, for the second face turn in less than half an hour. Sort of like a prehistoric “RAW.”

WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. COWBOY BOB ORTON Piper and Orton attack Hulk and Mister T post-match but their new friend Paul Orndorff makes the save.

GOOD ENOUGH” The premiere of Cyndi Lauper’s music video. This ticked off a lot of traditional fans and promoters who couldn’t believe Vince was allowing heels and faces to interact in a skit.

WOMEN’S TITLE: WENDI RICHTER vs. FABULOUS MOOLAH Moolah brings a document from the WWF board of directors saying Cyndi Lauper will be banned from ringside. It should be noted that the WWF board of directors apparently prints all official notation on sacred ancient parchments.

JUNKYARD DOG vs. “The Duke of Dorchester” PETE DOUGHERTY Hey, a lot of people went to bed after the show, why not finish with a match that’ll make then sleepy?

CYNDI LAUPER’S MOTHER’S DAY PARTY with Hulk Hogan, Cyndi Lauper, Freddie Blassie, Junkyard Dog, and their respective mothers. Blassie’s introduction of his “mother” wins moment of the night, and Fabulous Moolah gets thrown into a cake because, you know, throwing people into cakes is funny.
