KILLER BEES vs. FUNK BROTHERS (HOSS & JIMMY JACK)

KING TONGA vs. MAGINFICENT MURACO

TONY GAREA vs. TED ARCIDI Arcidi is evidently being geared up for a heel turn, but Vince changed his mind and simply showed him the door instead.

JUNKYARD DOG vs. ADORABLE ADRIAN ADONIS I don’t know if Vince had any ideas for JYD that got scrapped, but he acts a lot like a heel here, using his chain and shoving the referee.

BIG MACHINE, SUPER MACHINE, & CAPTAIN LOU ALBANO vs. KING KONG BUNDY, BIG JOHN STUDD, & BOBBY “THE BRAIN” HEENAN The managers actually wrestle a more exciting match than any of the wrestlers. Giant Machine (Guess who?) runs in for the DQ.

BRITISH BULLDOGS WORKOUT

BRITISH BULLDOGS vs. MOONDOGS OK, I swear to you, I’m not going nuts…during a suplex block-and-reversal spot with Rex and Dynamite, there’s either a really weird audio recording flaw, or somebody farts into a microphone. Given that Alfred Hayes laughs right after it happens, I’m incredibly curious.

DAVEY BOY SMITH vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE Uh, a best-of video typically shouldn’t include the subject losing via a clean pin, unless the match is DAMN good, but…

The WWF’s Greatest Matches (Coliseum Video Collector’s Series)

WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. “Mister Wonderful” PAUL ORNDORFF from Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens, 1984. Cool because it’s different from the typical Hogan finish. Hulk reverses a flying bodypress and wins with a small package.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: TITO SANTANA vs. “Macho Man” RANDY SAVAGE from Boston Garden, 1986. Savage wins the IC title (and gets a face pop!) after knocking out Santana with a foreign object.

WORLD TITLE: BOB BACKLUND vs. IRON SHEIK Clipped but better-VQ version of Backlund’s title loss, described as being “rare footage from the archives.” Vince talks about how Backlund’s nice-guy attitude and adherence to the rules may have been his undoing—a quasi-shoot, as Backlund’s falling out with the WWF involved his refusal to turn heel.

TAG TEAM TITLE: GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE & BRUTUS BEEFCAKE vs. HILLBILLY JIM & UNCLE ELMER from MSG.

HULK HOGAN & “Mister Wonderful” PAUL ORNDORFF vs. BIG JOHN STUDD & KING KONG BUNDY The legendary match where the insecure Orndorff clotheslines Hogan and leaves with the Heenan Family, who take him into the locker room and tell him he really is wonderful. Whether they meant to or not, the WWF created the first feud where fans felt sympathy for the heel, and that’s why the feud sold out arenas for seven months.

The WWF Superstars are recruited by NASA to save the mission, and top candidates Hulk Hogan & Nikolai Volkoff head into space, where anything can happen! The 1994 King of the Ring (6/16/1994, Baltimore, MD)

RICKY MEDLOCK sings the national anthem.

QUARTERFINAL: RAZOR RAMON vs. BAM-BAM BIGELOW Special guest color man Art Donovan is unintentionally funny here, as Bigelow holds Razor in a backbreaker resthold for a loooooong time, about two minutes, and Art finally asks, “Gorilla, is he dead?”

QUARTERFINAL: IRWIN R. SCHYSTER vs. MABEL God bless Mike Rotundo for actually being able to get a crowd reaction by yelling things to the fans like “Do you have a social security number?”

QUARTERFINAL: “THE ROCKET” OWEN HART vs. TATANKA

QUARTERFINAL: 1-2-3 KID vs. JEFF JARRETT

WORLD TITLE: BRET “HITMAN” HART vs. DIESEL The returning Jim Neidhart is in Bret’s corner.

SEMIFINAL: “THE ROCKET” OWEN HART vs. 1-2-3 KID

TAG TEAM TITLE: HEADSHRINKERS vs. CRUSH & YOKOZUNA

FINAL: RAZOR RAMON vs. “THE ROCKET” OWEN HART Jim Neidhart turns heel, leading to a victory for Owen, making him a very legitimate main eventer, not to mention making him “The King of Harts.”

Rowdy” RODDY PIPER vs. JERRY “The King” LAWLER Rowdy Roddy was the man that got me hooked on wrestling, and man, did my heart sink at this show. The angle progressed as such: Lawler badmouthed kids at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (winner of the prestigious 1994 “Least Imaginative Name for a Hospital” award) and of course the crowd was sufficiently outraged (Good lord, that man hates sick children! Boo!), so Piper came out of retirement for “one last fight” (Ha!) and he’s donating his salary to the boringly-monikered wellness center. Lawler goads Piper in the meantime by having a scrawny teen appear on his King’s Court segment pretending to be Piper, praising Lawler and burying the real Piper. Piper, in this match, retaliates by bringing the scrawny teen to ringside in his corner, because the teen is, uh, angry with Lawler, I guess, for, um, making him…impersonate…Piper…unwillingly, or something. The announcers don’t even bother trying to make sense of that angle.

Also includes a number of promotions for “The WWF’s New Generation” with an out-with-the-old recurring theme in them. And by gosh, when you want to put over the new generation of talent in your promotion, by all means, do it with Art Donovan doing color commentary for matches featuring Jim Neidhart, Captain Lou Albano, Afa the Wild Samoan, Roddy Piper, and Jerry Lawler.

SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA & “Golden Boy” ARNOLD SKAALAND vs. MAGNIFICENT MURACO & CAPTAIN LOU ALBANO Better than you might think. For his age, Skaaland is pretty good in the ring.

CHIEF JAY STRONGBOW vs. SGT. SLAUGHTER Laaaaaaaaammmmeeee finish. Slaughter scores a clean pin following a clothesline.

Polish Power” IVAN PUTSKI vs. MASKED SUPERSTAR

WORLD TITLE: BOB BACKLUND vs. IRON SHEIK In its entirety. Backlund’s six-year reign comes to an end, as manager Arnold Skaaland throws in the towel as Sheik applies the Camel Clutch. For conspiracy theory lovers…it’s obvious that Backlund knew he was going to lose this match.

2 OUT OF THREE FALLS: TONY ATLAS, ROCKY JOHNSON, & SPECIAL DELIVERY JONES vs. WILD SAMOANS

BOB BACKLUND delivers a tearful promo from the locker room. Back then fans probably thought that this was just setting up Bob’s next big angle, but with 20/20 hindsight, it’s obvious that they’re trying to bury him to make way for pro-wrestling’s next big thing.

TITO SANTANA vs. IVAN KOLOFF Tito is getting a big push leading up to his Intercontinental Title win, and he scores a clean pin over the former WWWF World Champ.

Polish Power” IVAN PUTSKI vs. SGT. SLAUGHTER

SALVATORE BELLOMO vs. “Mister Wonderful” PAUL ORNDORFF Orndorff is managed by Rowdy Roddy Piper, and is making his MSG debut.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: MAGNIFICENT MURACO vs. TITO SANTANA Ends in a DDQ for absolutely no reason.

WORLD TITLE: IRON SHIEK vs. HULK HOGAN Hulk, a month into his WWF employment, wins the World Title in a squash, and the crowd goes INSANE when he scores the pinfall. A new era begins…

HULK HOGAN cuts his first promo as WWF Champ, and gets doused with champagne by André the Giant, Ivan Putski, and Rocky Johnson, all “endorsing” the new champion for the Backlund marks who might not be too thrilled about this.

SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA vs. RENE GOULET

HULK HOGAN AND HIS PARENTS, PETE & RUTH “HOGAN” celebrate in the locker room. Hulk calls his parents Pete & Ruth instead of Mom & Dad, presumably since they aren’t really his parents. They found him in a crib/capsule by the side of the road when Hulk was a baby, and were stunned when the infant lifted their car over his head. Pete & Ruth raised Hulk as their own, and some time later Hulkster communicated with his father and found out what his life’s mission was, so he ditched Verne Gagne and joined the WWF.

TONY GAREA vs. AFA THE WILD SAMOAN This has nothing to do with the match, but did anyone out there get why the Samoans were always introduced with numbers when they had names?

EDDIE GILBERT vs. IRON SHEIK

INVADERS vs. ROWDY RODDY PIPER & “Dr. D” DAVID SCHULTZ The Invaders, once penciled in for a tag title reign, begin their de-push.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: TITO SANTANA vs. MAGNIFICENT MURACO Since the last MSG show, Tito has won the belt, making the point of continuing this feud a mystery

ANDRÉ THE GIANT vs. MASKED SUPERSTAR The Machines Explode!

Superfly” JIMMY SNUKA vs. SAMU THE WILD SAMOAN

TONY ATLAS, ROCKY JOHNSON, & IVAN PUTSKI vs. SGT. SLAUGHTER, TIGER CHUNG LEE, & MISTER FUJI The Sarge turns face in MSG, as he had already done in a few other cities. Apparently word of this has already got around to the MSG fans because he gets a big pop on his introduction.

CHIEF JAY STRONGBOW vs. KAMALA

B. BRIAN BLAIR vs. IRON MIKE SHARPE

SALVATORE BELLOMO vs. RICK “Quickdraw” McGRAW

TAG TEAM TITLE: ADRIAN ADONIS & DICK MURDOCH vs. WILD SAMOANS Captain Lou Albano is guest referee and manager of the reigning champions, making this an incredibly predictable match.

PAT PATTERSON vs. KEN PATERA Some things are funnier with hindsight; Patera hesitates taking off his entrance costume because he doesn’t like the way Patterson is looking at him when he starts taking his pants off.

Polish Power” IVAN PUTSKI vs. JESSE “The Body” VENTURA The governor wins by count-out, making him the number-one contender for the World Title at the next MSG show.

2 OUT OF 3 FALLS: THE FABULOUS FREEBIRDS vs. RON SHAW, BUTCHER VACHON, & “Duke of Dorchester” PETE DOUGHERTY The Freebirds make their only MSG appearance; they were supposed to get a HUGE push because of the Rock & Wrestling Connection until they had an almost-immediate falling out with Vince.

Superfly” JIMMY SNUKA vs. ROWDY RODDY PIPER Piper wins by count-out, then goes to the floor and breaks Snuka’s neck.

TERRY DANIELS vs. FRED MARZINO Almost none of this match is seen, as we spend a lot of time watching Snuka getting treated and taken to the ambulance in the back.

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: TITO SANTANA vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE Tito wins and Hammer responds by putting him in the figure-four and injuring his leg.

THREE HOURS
Madison Square Garden Presents the World Wrestling Federation 9/22/1984

HOWARD FINKEL announces that Jesse Ventura, who was supposed to be wrestling in the main event, has been hospitalized (this was legit, BTW) and that Big John Studd will take his place against Hulk Hogan.

SALVATORE BELLOMO vs. BRUTUS BEEFCAKE

CHIEF JAY STRONGBOW vs. NIKOLAI VOLKOFF

SPECIAL DELIVERY JONES vs. “Dr. D” DAVID SCHULZ

JOSE LUIS RIVERA vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE

WORLD TITLE: HULK HOGAN vs. BIG JOHN STUDD I think this is Bobby “The Brain” Heenan’s MSG debut, and what a start! Hulk does a major bladejob and gets counted out, and Big John and Bobby, supposedly not knowing the WWF’s rules, walk away with the title belt.

RICK “Quickdraw” McGRAW vs. KEN PATERA

SGT. SLAUGHTER & WILD SAMOANS vs. ADRIAN ADONIS, DICK MURDOCH, & CAPTAIN LOU ALBANO EXCELLENT match. No joke… ***1/2.

B. BRIAN BLAIR vs. IRON MIKE SHARPE The match itself is marginal, but Iron Mike is a riot throughout.
