Ireland/ Éire is an island to the northwest of continental Europe. It is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth.

Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which covers the remaining area and is located in the north-east of the island. The population of Ireland is approximately 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland. Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland and the largest city on the island.

Balbriggan is a town with a rich and long history. People have lived in Balbriggan since Ireland was first inhabitated. Originally, Balbriggan was but a small fishing village, which was part of the bigger Baroney of Balrothery. Balrothery was the main Parish in the area, boasting a population of 250, compared to just 30 in Balbriggan at the time. In the Census of 1911, it was clear that Balrothery was still the main area, however, by 1936, Balbriggan had grown and had become the parish of the area. This shows the growth in population and the shift in the economic culture of the town. The main emphasis in Balbriggan had been fishing, however cotton and other such industries began to take hold.
Balbriggan is now an urban, vibrant town, on the outskirts of Dublin. It is situated in North County Dublin, not far from Dublin Airport. Balbriggan while orignally a small, rural town, since the Celtic Tiger, has experienced a massive population explosion and has become one of the most rapidly developing towns in the country.
Balbriggan is very well serviced and can be reached by many modes of transport – it is situated on the M1 – the motorway which links the North and South, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Irish Rail and a range of private bus companies service the town daily, which facilitates many families commuting to work in the city.

Due to the population explosion in Balbriggan, there has been a huge increase in the amount of schools in the area. Our school opened in 2006. Since 2005, 4 large primary schools have opened – one on a emergency basis. Each caters for in excess of 350/400 students. Our school caters for 400 at present, but will cater for 480 in the next 2 years. Another school developed from a small school of less than 100 students to a school for 450 students during this time. At secondary level, both of the existing schools have grown (doubled in size), while a third school has opened, which caters for 1000 students. Another second level school, which will operate through the medium of Irish, is due to open in September 2014 and will serve 700 students, while there are plans being made for yet another to open in the coming years. This shows the level of growth in the town.

Our school was founded in 2006 by a group of parents and Irish Language enthusiasts. This school opened due the dedication of this group and it has grown beyond all recognition in the last few years. The doors opened with 2 teachers and 35 students in September 2006 and now has 20 teachers with 400 students. The school has many interests and we encourage our students to get involved in as many as possible – ranging from sport – hurling, football, running, Euroball, Our Active Flag, to environmental awareness – applying for our Green Flag, creating and maintaining our garden, music – Choirs and musical instruments, leadership and responsibility through our Students’ Council, Drama competitions, fundraising, Debating, Chess and many more. We strive to encourage children to become involved and develop interests in many areas so as they can become more active members in our society.
Our whole school community has enjoyed and learned so much from our involvement in the Euroball project to date and are extremely excited about the upcoming visit from our Comenius partners. It was with great pride that we were able to bring our students to Croatia and we cannot wait to repay the kindness shown to us on the trip when all of our partners bring their students to Ireland.

3. Doctor Peter Beron Secondary School, Bulgaria

Bulgaria is located in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres , Bulgaria is Europe's 14th-largest country.
Human activity in the lands of modern Bulgaria can be traced back to the Paleolithic. In the 7th century, a peace treaty with Byzantium in 681 and the establishment of a permanent capital at Pliska south of the Danube marked the beginning of the First Bulgarian Empire. The Bulgars gradually mixed up with the local population, adopting a common language on the basis of Slavonic.
In 864 Boris I abolished paganism in favour of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Simeon the Great's 34-year rule began in 893 and saw the largest territorial expansion of Bulgaria, along with a golden age of Bulgarian culture.

The population of 7.36 million people is predominantly urban and mainly concentrated in the administrative centres of its 28 provinces. Most commercial and cultural activities are concentrated in the capital Sofia. The strongest sectors of the economy are heavy industry, power engineering, and agriculture, all relying on local natural resources.

The current political structure dates to the adoption of a democratic constitution in 1991. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0d/pernik_flag.png/100px-pernik_flag.png
Pernik is a city in western Bulgaria (about 20 kilometres south-west of Sofia) with a population of 80,191. It is the main city of Pernik Province and lies on both banks of the Struma River in the Pernik Valley between the Viskyar, Vitosha and Golo Bardo mountains.
Originally the site of a Thracian fortress founded in the 4th century BC, and later a Roman settlement, Pernik became part of the Bulgarian Empire in the early 9th century as an important fortress. The medieval town was a key Bulgarian stronghold during Bulgarian tsar Samuil's wars against the Byzantine Empire in the 11th century, when it was governed by the local noble Krakra of Pernik, withstanding Byzantine sieges a number of times.
In the 20th century Pernik developed rapidly as a centre for coal mining and heavy industry. The Surva International Festival of the Masquerade Games is held in the city every January.

Our school was established on the 01-09-1983 as the first language school in the territory of Penrik .English Russian and German are the foreign languages studied. In the 1986 the school moved to a separate building – that of the first comprehensive school in Pernik. In September 1991, the statute of the school, as one teaching Russian as a first foreign language, was changed in accordance with the new curriculum. In 1992/1993 students started learning English as a first foreign language from first grade. Now there are nearly 800 students from the first to twelve grade.
