The aim of a game of Euroball is to score points by throwing the ball into a box, located in the opposition's goal circle. Points are only scored if the ball is hit from outside the circle. The player scoring must make contact with a passed ball and cannot enter the circle, even after hitting the ball. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the game is the winner.
The ball used is the same as an Olympic handball: 50 – 52cm circumference.
The ball moves from player to player through passing. The ball may not be picked from the ground. Players cannot travel with the ball in their hands. There are a number of different passes:
Under arm pass: the ball is thrown from one hand and hit by the other hand (as in gaelic football)
Over arm pass: the ball is thrown by one hand and hit by the other (as in volleyball)
Kick: the ball is kicked from the ground (as in soccer). Players may travel with the ball at their feet, as in soccer.
Head
Defensive players cannot obstruct the opposition player with the ball – no contact. The ball can be intercepted as it is passing from one player to another. When a player catches the ball it is a ‘mark’ and all other players must move back one metre. If a player catches the ball it cannot be dropped to feet. It must be passed to another player. However, it can be blocked by the chest, dropping to feet. At any time any part of the body can be used to block the ball.
Scoring: the player who scores must make contact with a passing ball. The ball cannot be caught. Instead it must be struck (over-arm, under-arm, kick or by the head) into the box in the centre of the circle.
The court is divided into halves with a scoring circle (circle of basketball court, c 3.5m diameter). A box (washing machine box dimesion) is in the middle of the circle. No players are allowed to enter the circle. If the ball falls into the circle it may only be retrieved by feet, like soccer.
There are six players on each team, and each must wear a "bib" showing their country’s colour. Two substitutes are allowed on the sideline. There are no limit to the number of substitutions but at least three boys and three girls must be on the court at all times. Game is played for twenty minutes, two halves of ten minutes, with a two minute break. Each team can call two time-outs during the game.
Each half starts with a tip-off like soccer. The teams flip a coin to decide the first tip-off. Players start each half on their own half of the court. There is no off-side rule. If one team sends the ball outside the court the opposition gets a line ball, which is a free pass from the hands.
The referee can call a time-out for injury. This time will be added at the end of each half. Any fouls committed – contact which affects the game flow or incorrect passing will result in a free ‘marked’ pass. No system of red/yellow card.
