6. Osnovna škola Gradac, Croatia

The area known as Croatia today was inhabited throughout the prehistoric period. Later, the region was settled by Liburnians and Illyrians, while the first Greek colonies were established on the islands of Korčula, Hvar and Vis, and finally became part of the Roman Empire. This period ends with Avar and Croat invasions in the first half of the 7th century. In Medieval Age this territory was ruled by Croatian rulers.
The Venetians gained control over most of Dalmatia by 15th century, with the exception of the city-state of Dubrovnik which became independent. In 16th century the House of Habsburg was chosen as a new ruler of Croatia, under the condition that it provides protection to Croatia against the Ottoman Empire while respecting its political rights. In the first half of the 19th century the Croatian National Revival, a political and cultural campaign, was advocating the unity of all South Slavs in the empire. By the Croatian–Hungarian Settlement of 1868, kingdoms of Croatia and Slavonia were united while the Kingdom of Dalmatia remained under de facto Austrian control.
In 1918 the Croatian Sabor declared independence and decided to join the newly formed State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which entered into union with the Kingdom of Serbia. The new country was later named Yugoslavia. After the World War II, Croatia became a Socialist federal unit of the SFR Yugoslavia, but enjoying a degree of autonomy within the federation. Croatia declared independence in June 1991. Croatian War of Independence  effectively ended in 1995 with a decisive victory by Croatia.

One of the most famous global cultural contribution from Croatia is the necktie, derived from the cravat originally worn by the 17th-century Croatian mercenaries in France.

The Croatian Adriatic coast is one of the most indented in the world: it has 1246 islands and islets with a total coastline of 4058 km, the total length of the mainland coast being 1777 km.

The Dalmatian dog got its name from the region of Dalmatia.

The picturesque town of Loughrea is located in east County Galway, approximately 30km southeast of Galway City. Situated along the northern shore of Lough Rea, the thriving ‘town of the grey lake’, has a rich medieval history, and is regarded to date back to the 13th century, when the Anglo-Norman, Richard de Burgo, is reputed to have built Loughrea Castle. The town lies north of a range of wooded hills, the Slieve Aughty Mountains. The town is also famous for its beautiful cathedral which dominates the town's skyline. In the course of the 1600s the Catholic bishop based in Loughrea fled across Europe due to the oppression of the Roman Catholic religion by the English government. He lived the remainder of his life in the town of Gyór, Hungary, where the story of his life is still commemorated.

The site of the Battle of Aughrim is situated to the east of the town. This battle was the decisive battle of the Williamite Wars in the 1690s. Soliders from these wars went on to fight in other battles across Europe including the Battle of Almonsa in Spain.
Our school was founded in 2000 by a group of parents who wished their children to be educated through the medium of the Irish language (Gaelic). At present the school is located in temporary accommodation and it is planned to progress to a permanent building in the course of 2016.
