Spain is an important market for Alaska cod exporters, but because there are few companies left in Spain producing salted cod, most frozen H&G cod imported to Spain is destined for Portugal where it is salted and sold mostly to Brazil, Italy and France.

One of the major processors still producing salted cod in Spain is Sofresal in Hondarribia on the border with France. Sofresal produces salted and light-salted cod, mostly for export to France and Italy. Both markets show a strong preference for whiter, thicker cod fillets which can be produced from Pacific cod and Sofresal has shifted its entire sourcing from Nordic to Alaska cod with excellent results. ASMI has assisted Sofresal in promoting their origin-identified Alaska cod products in France, Spain and Italy with flyer ads, trade shows and other promotional events, and we expect Sofresal’s success will bring more stable growth to exports of Alaska cod to Spain.
Spanish imports of fresh cod surged the last few years thanks to large North Atlantic catches, corresponding low prices, and massive industry promotions. Taking succulent margins plus major incentives from Norge, Spanish supermarkets created large fresh cod displays, especially of ready-to-cook fillets, on their ice tables. With a return to more normal prices and a less generous Norge support, supermarket sales of fresh cod dropped in 2014-15, as reflected in the more than 50% decline in imports of fresh cod fillets.
