Alaska Pollock:

Spain is consistently one of the top three European markets for Pacific hake and Alaska pollock surimi from the US. Spain is a particularly important market for high-grade Alaska pollock surimi which offers the high gel strength required for production of the very popular imitation eel surimi analogue, in which a number of Spanish producers specialize.

Import data provides species breakdowns beginning 2012.

Pre-2012 breakdowns are estimates based on import and export data (Data source 2)
US-origin surimi are swiftly gaining market share in this growing market. In the last couple years, Spain’s two leading surimi eel producers, Angulas Aguinaga and Pescanova, have launched a number of new surimi-based products (calamari rings, lobster tails, high-protein noodles, burgers, etc.) which are expanding Spain’s demand for surimi in general and Alaska pollock surimi in particular.
Sales of Alaska pollock fillets in Spain have grown over the past decade, but Alaska pollock is still a minor player in the 270,000 mt/yr Spanish whitefish market dominated by hake and cod. So there is opportunity to grow, especially for once-frozen Alaska pollock fillets which represent a minor part of 4,000 mt/yr Alaska pollock fillet market.

Spain MT Imports of Frozen Alaska Pollock Fillets (Market Year July-June) (Data source 2)
In many countries, once-frozen Alaska pollock fillets are a favorite ingredient of food manufacturers for the production of coated fish products such as fish fingers. The market for these products in Spain is relatively small and production is even smaller, so most once-frozen Alaska pollock fillets are now sold in Spain in IQF format to retailers or to institutional caterers.
In 2013, the Eroski supermarket chain attempted to introduce a refreshed once-frozen Alaska pollock fillet in an MAP tray. With little to distinguish pollock from the 7-8 other whitefish fillets in the same display case, pollock sales were too weak for Eroski to maintain the reference, in spite of their interest in promoting this MSC-certified product. Once-frozen Alaska pollock still has not found its place in the Spanish market, but various important Spanish seafood companies are studying ways to take advantage of this high quality, sustainably harvested and competitively priced whitefish and we expect at least one of them to launch a new Alaska pollock product in the 2015-16 market year.
Cod: The most popular cod format in Spain is frozen, light-salted cod fillets and loins, an inexpensive substitute for salted cod invented by Icelandic processors, though most product now comes from China.

Spain MT Imports of Frozen, Light-Salted Cod Fillets (Market year July-June) (Data source 2)
The Spanish market for traditional salted cod is one of the world’s largest (30,594 MT of imports in 2014-15 worth $115.5 million) but looks to be in slow decline. The market recuperated somewhat in 2014-15 with a 3% increase in imports of whole, salted cod and a 19% increase in salted cod fillets.
