Portugal MT Exports of Salted Cod (Market Year July-June) (Data source 2)
Portugal is one of Alaska’s major export markets for frozen H&G Pacific cod and is especially important because of the large percentage of higher-priced, hook-and-line caught Alaska cod which Portuguese processors buy. Faced with lower-priced competition from Russian Pacific cod, Alaska’s superior quality allows it to maintain the majority of the Pacific cod market. Most of the frozen Atlantic cod comes from Norway.

While Portugal’s salt cod processors have been taking advantage of the last two year’s low Atlantic cod prices, Pacific cod (mostly of Alaska origin) has been able to maintain a 10,000 mt/yr market in spite of Atlantic cod’s advantages of price and proximity. This is because of the preference for whiter, thicker Pacific cod in Brazil, France and Italy, as well as, from numerous salt cod processors who have discovered that Pacific cod produces a better de-salted cod product because of its whiter color and firmer texture.
Alaska Pollock: 2014-15 was a record year for sales of once-frozen Alaska pollock to Portugal. Portuguese salt cod processors import a growing amount of Alaska pollock fillets to produce low-cost shredded salt cod products. They are willing to pay more for once-frozen fillets from the US instead of twice-frozen product from China because yields are higher and the quality of the finished product is better.

Salmon: In a decade marked by severe economic recession, the market for salmon in Portugal has grown from a small, 2-3,000 MT/yr to over 20,000 MT/yr making Portugal the leading per-capita consumer of salmon in the SEU region.

Whole fresh salmon and frozen salmon fillets are the two product formats which have triumphed in the Portuguese market because of their low price and favored status with supermarkets. There is only an incipient market for premium wild salmon in Portugal – mostly in the restaurant sector. We expect this market to develop as the Portuguese salmon market matures and the economy improves.
