3- Rapid screening methods (in dental clinic)
a. Dextrostix: to detect blood glucose b. Clinistix: is a method to detect glycosuria by the patient
4- Oral Glucose tolerance test
Fasting blood sample is taken
▪ 75 gm of sugar given orally
▪ Blood samples are taken at half hour intervals for 2 – 3 hours.
- Normal blood glucose should be less than 180 mg/dl after 1 hour, and return to normal after 2 hours.
5- Urinary glucose
▪ When glucose serum exceeds 160 – 180 mg/dl, glucose may appear in urine.
▪ Glycosuria may follow a heavy meal in normal persons.
6- Glycosylated hemoglobin (reflects blood sugar level in the last three months)
▪ < 6% it is normal, patient is not diabetic
▪ 7 – 9% patient is controlled
▪ > 13% patient is not controlled
