16.10 noun + noun and noun + of + noun constructions 1. In some cases, you can use either a
noun of noun construction (e.g.
the University of Manchester ), or a
noun + noun construction
(e.g.
Manchester University ). Unfortunately there is no rule to help you decide if they are both applicable and if they both have the same meaning (

2. The
noun + of + noun construction is generally used with words such as
piece, series, bunch, group and
herd (
fl ock etc.
3. In some cases, the
noun + of + noun construction is not possible at all. This is
often because the preposition of indicates that the first noun is made of the second noun (e.g.
a ring of gold = a ring made of gold ).
4. Long strings of nouns and adjectives are generally only used if they are names of pieces of equipment or methods.
