EDUCATIONAL AIM

The course aims to provide both theoretical and empirical analysis of the integration process.


EU economic and understanding in many key economic aspects the EEC of past and future of EMU, which an illustration of major policies at EU level.

For a fruitful understanding of theoretical issues addressed, it is useful that the student has a knowledge of the contents of the course of International Economics, and those of European content.

EDUCATIONAL AIM

The course aims to present the basic models in order to understand innovative strategies of enterprises, competitive dynamics and public policy for technological transfer, intellectual property and research. Particular attention is given to the economic impact of ICTs.


COURSE PROGRAM.

  1. Introduction: from static to dynamic competition

  2. Innovation and research: basic and applied research and development. Linear model, chain model. Relationships between university and industry. Reasons for public funding of basic research.

  3. Features of innovative process. Different ways of generating innovation. The learning curve. Sectorial models of technical progress. Main innovation indicators. Technological balance of payments. Innovation systems.

  4. Features of patent system. Italian and European patent.

  5. Resources and competence. Competitive advantages and revenues. Case study: the hard disk industry.

  6. Main features of entrepreneurship in high technology. Acquisition of financial resources in uncertainty and information asymmetry condition

  7. Information economy. Production and exchange of information goods.

  8. The spread of innovation. Introduction. The epidemic model and the treshold model.

  9. Internationalization of innovative and productive activities.

COURSE PROGRAM

Personnel Economics is the field that uses incentive devices and economic analyses to think about human resources issues. It does not take the traditional sociological, industrial or psychological human resources approach. Rather, personnel economics proceeds from the assumption that human resources concerns are inherently economic issues which economists can address from a position of comparative advantage.

The course provides students with a framework from which to judge the impact and appropriateness of various employment practices. We focus on the building blocks that form the foundation of personnel economics: first, economists assume that individuals engage in maximizing, rational behavior; second, economics adheres strictly to the importance of equilibrium as part of any theory; third, economists place a heavy emphasis on a clearly defined concept of efficiency. The subjects to be discussed include hiring standards, productivity and performance measurement, compensation schemes, incentives and employee evaluation programs, diversity management. Economic theory will be used to develop insight and to produce appropriate policy prescriptions. Some background in microeconomics will be expected.






EDUCATIONAL AIM

This course provides an economic analytical view of fundamental personnel issues. Topics covered include education and training, job design and hierarchy, recruitment decisions, compensation systems, evaluation and promotion strategies, turnover of workers, performance pay, tournaments. The main aim of the course will be the discussion of economic methods that can explain personnel decisions and organizational structures of firms.

At the end of the course students should be familiar with the terminology and basic issues related to the internal labor market; able to understand alternative theories which aim at explaining stylized facts of human resources concerns; in a position to evaluate the results of empirical work and to assess the economic implications of various employment practices; able to relate theory to practice handling abstract themes and quantitative evidence; able to work independently in order to research and select relevant information and extend this information to problem-solving within the context of personnel economics issues.
