COURSE PROGRAM

1)- The economic analysis of human behavior

    1. The fundamental assumptions and approach to gender;

    2. The general theory of rational behavior;

    3. Utility theory, game theory and ethics

2)- The efficient institutions: families, markets and contracts

2-1 The household economy;

2-2 The failure of the market and the economic theory of contract;

2-3 The contract of employment as a relationship of agency

3)- The economic theory of discrimination

3-1 Personnel selection and statistical discrimination;

3-2 Causes and consequences of the division of labor by gender;

3-3 Anti-discrimination legislation and Positive Actions




EDUCATIONAL AIM

Course objective is to highlight the importance of gender in the economic environment and to show the usefulness of a gender approach to the analysis of economic problems. The gender approach is applied both to the analysis of the labor market that the management of human resources. The topics covered include participation in the labor market, the family as the unit of production, the optimal allocation of time, commitment and talent between housework and childcare and labor market, wage gaps, the investment in human capital, statistical discrimination, segregation, horizontal and vertical, the theory of tournaments, gender policies.
The teaching method includes self-training,
active participation and presentations in the classroom. After completing this course, students will be able to capture the main phenomena related to the economy of gender by comparing the Italian situation with that of other countries will be able to describe the results of empirical research and assess the economic implications of policies on equal opportunities will be able to integrate their knowledge independently collect and process information in different contexts and by extending the application of lessons learned. They will know also prepare a research report on the analysis of a specific case, supplemented by an interview with a top-manager of public or private sector, proving to have developed learning skills and autonomy of research to be able to make personal assessments and propose reasoned conclusions and relevant.
Prerequisite: Labor Economics and Economics of personnel.
