(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of the Deacon seconded by Mr A Bremner, Dr R T Ritchie was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year.

(c) Committee

It was intimated that Messers A J G Brown, Duncan Millar and John W Sutherland retired from Office and were not eligible for re-election.
The following were appointed as Members of Committee to hold office for two years

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.


Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Friday 24th November 1972.


Kirkin of the Trades

The Deacon reminded Members that the Kirkin of he Trades would take place in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 8th October and he expressed the hope that as many members as possible would attend.

Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting held on 31st August 1972 was read and approved.


Arising out of the Minutes

The Clerk reported that the proceeds of the sale of tickets for the Supper held on 4th October 1972 amounted to £87 and that the expenses were £76.04 leaving a surplus of £0.96

These expenses however did not include those of the Boxmaster and it was agreed that these amounting to £6 be paid leaving a deficit of £5.04. There had however been a surplus at the March Supper of £5.62 which would cover this.
Pensions

Letters from the present pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that the five Applications should be submitted to the Nine Trades Court. The Committee authorised the Deacon and the Boxmaster to sign the List of Poor.


Annual Dinner

Arrangements for the Annual Dinner were considered band the Clerk submitted specimen Menus. It was agreed that the Menu be selected at the cost of £2 and after consideration of other expenses it was agreed that the price of the Ticket be £3.

The Deacon stated that the provisional Toasts List was as follows:

The City and Trade of Dundee to be proposed by Sheriff J Irvine Smith, the Reply by Lord Provost Fitzgerald.

The Toast of The Nine Incorporated Trades to be proposed by Ex-Lord Provost D J Thomson of Perth and the Reply by Convener Moyes.

The Guests would be proposed by the Deacon and the Reply by James Matheson Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow.

The Boxmaster would propose the Vote of Thanks.

It was agreed that the Public Address System be obtained from Messers Larg & Sons and also that Mr Thomson be asked to undertake the duties of Toastmaster.

It was agreed that there be invited to the Top Table in addition to the Speakers the Ex-Deacons, The Chaplain, the Convener of the Three Trades, the Lord Dean of Guild and Principal Drever.

It was further agreed that there be given to each Member of Committee a section of the membership roll and the Committee Members would contact these persons to express the hope that they would attend the Dinner.


Commemoration Plaque

The Clerk read a letter from the Clerk to The Nine Incorporated Trades intimating that the cost of the St Andrew’s Church Bi-Centenary Commemoration Plaque in St Andrew’s Church was £79.56 and of than amount the share of the Bonnetmaker craft was £6.63. It was agreed that this should be paid.


March making

It was intimated that the March Making would be held on 14th March 1972(1973?) and he were being booked at the Queen’s Hotel for that date.

The Minutes of the Meeting held on 24th October 1972 was read and approved.


Arising out of the Minutes

The Clerk submitted a Statement showing the expenses involved in the Annual Dinner and this showed a surplus of £2.36. This was considered satisfactory.


Applications for Membership

The Clerk submitted Applications for Membership from Professor John S Beck, and Messers William J McGrattan, A J C McMain, R D S Scott, A J C Johnston and these applications were approved by the Committee. Further Applications were expected and it was remitted to the Deacon, the Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve these on the understanding that not more than seven Members be admitted.


Arrangements for Supper on 14th March 1973

It was agreed that the Toast List be The Nine Incorporated Trades, the Pharmaceutical Profession and the New Members. Suggested Speakers were Mr Norman Egan to propose the nine trades, the reply by Convener David Moyes, Dr John Langlands to propose the Toast to the Pharmaceutical Profession and a speaker to be arranged to reply to this. The Deacon undertook to make the arrangements for the speaker. It was agreed that the vote of thanks be proposed by Mr Ian Smith.

Consideration was given to the Menu and it was agreed that the price of the ticket be £1.75. It was remitted to the Clerk to make the arrangements.
Annual Dinner

It was intimated that the Annual Dinner would take place on Wednesday 21st November 1973 and consideration was given to the Speakers at the Dinner. Several names were suggested and it was remitted to the Boxmaster and the Clerk to arrange the principal speakers.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

The Minutes of the Meeting held on Tuesday 7th February 1973 was read and approved.


Arising out of the Minutes

The Clerk submitted a statement showing the expenses involved in the Supper held on 14th March 173 and this showed a deficit of £5.50. The wine at the Deacon’s Table and the Boxmaster’s Table had been included in the expenses but this deficit could be covered from the Supper in March 1972.


Arrangements for the Annual General Meeting

Applications for admission to the Craft were submitted for Mr James B Haidon and Mr David Richardson. It was intimated that further applications would be received and it was agreed that not more than five persons be admitted at the October Making. It was remitted to the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to approve the applications to be forthcoming.

The Toast List was discussed and it was agreed that the Toasts be to The Nine Incorporated Trades, this to be proposed by Mr Alastair Johnston and to be replied by the Convener of The Nine Incorporated Trades. It was further agreed that Deacon Chessor Matthew propose the Toast of the new Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk and that the vote of thanks be given by Mr Malcolm Currie.

The Menu for the Supper was considered and approved and it was agreed that the cost of the tickets be £2.25. It was further agreed that at the next meeting of the Committee the whole position of the Supper be considered with regard to venue, type and cost.


Accounts

The Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1973 were submitted and approved. These showed a surplus of Income over Expenditure of £18.56.


Annual Dinner

It was intimated that the Annual Dinner of the craft would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 21st November 1973. The Toast to the City and trade of Dundee would be proposed by Professor Ross Mitchell and the reply by the Lord Provost. The Toast to The Nine Incorporated Trades would be proposed by Mr D M Ross Dean of the Faculty of Advocates and replied to by the Convener. The Deacon would propose the Toast of The Guests and the reply by Mr Buchanan Fulton Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

The Clerk reported that committee Meetings were held on 24th October 1972, 7th February 1973 and 4th September 1973


Accounts

The Clerk submitted the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1973 an Abstract of which had already been circulated to Members. He reported that the income over expenditure amounted to £18.56, the reason for this being ha here had been fewer expensed during the year and in addition the proceeds for the sale of tickets for the Suppers and Annual Dinner had been slightly in excess of the expenses. The Accounts were approved on the motion of Mr Cecil Black seconded by Mr Roger Roscoe.


Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon

On the motion of Deacon Chessor Matthew seconded by Craftsman John Allardyce Boxmaster R T Ritchie was unanimously elected Deacon of the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his thanks to the Members of the Craft for appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his earnest endeavour to serve the Craft to the best of his ability. He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew and had pleasure in making the presentation to him of the Ex-Deacons Badge.

Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon for the past two years and thanked Members of the committee for their co-operation and assistance.

(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of Deacon Dr R T Ritchie seconded by Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew Mr Harold Adams was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting office Mr Adams thanked the Members for the honour they paid him in appointing him to his Office.

(c) The Clerk

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.

(d) The Committee

It was intimated that Messers John B Allardyce, I R Brewster, James A Carr and A M T Currie retired from Office and were not eligible for re-election.

The following were appointed as Members of Committee to hold Office for two years:

Mr James Boyd proposed by EX-Deacon Chessor Matthew seconded by Mr Alastair Bremner

Arising out of the Minutes

The Clerk reported that one of the pensioners Mrs Rebecca Rae had died on 6th October 1973. There was a new Applicant Mrs Winifred Scott the Widow of a Bonnetmaker. Letters from the present Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that the four existing Applications should be submitted to the Nine Trades Court and also the new Application by Mrs Winifred Scott. The Committee authorised the Deacon and Boxmaster to sign the List of the Poor.


Annual Dinner

Miscellaneous

The suggestion by Mr John Allardyce at the Annual General meeting that there be a tie or Badge was considered and it was agreed that the advice of the Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew might be sought as to the possible design of a tie.

It was agreed that Members of the Craft be made aware as far as possible of the Pensions which could be paid to Widows or Children of Bonnetmakers who were in difficult circumstances so that consideration could be given to the grant of a pension to them.

Arising from the Minutes

The Clerk reported that the new Application for a pension by Mrs Winifred Scott had been approved by the Nine Trades Court and she had been awarded a full pension.

The Clerk submitted a Statement showing the expenses involved in the Annual Dinner and this showed a surplus of £0.19 it had been hoped that there would have been a greater surplus but the dinner had not been so well attended as in previous years.
Applications for Membership

The Clerk submitted Applications for Membership from Alexander Lord Scrimgeour Mr D K Brown, Dr W P Dallas Ross and Mr George A Hutton and these Applications were approved by the Committee. Farther applications were expected and it was remitted to the Deacon, the Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve these on the understanding that not more than seven new Members be admitted.


Arrangements for the Supper on 20th March 1974

It was agreed that there would be a change of venue and that the Meeting and the Supper be held in the Royal Centre Hotel instead of the Queen’s Hotel, that Rooms had been provisionally booked for this and the Clerk was authorised to confirm. Consideration was given to the Menu and it was agreed that he price of the Tickets be £2. It was remitted to the Clerk to make the usual arrangements.

It was agreed that the Toast List be the Nine Incorporated of Dundee, the Accountancy Profession and the New Members. It was agreed that the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades be proposed by the Deacon, the reply to be by Mr David Moyes. Professor J C Beck would be approached to propose the Accountancy Profession and also Mr David Slidders to reply. It was agreed that the Vote of Thanks be proposed by Mr David Tweedie.
Annual Dinner

It was intimated that the Annual Dinner would take place on Wednesday 20th November 1974 and consideration was given to the Speakers at the Dinner. Several names were suggested and it was remitted to the Deacon and the Clerk to arrange the principal Speakers. It was agreed that the 19th of November 1975 be reserved for the Annual Dinner for that year.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.
