1541. Illinois). PICTURESQUE FREEPORT Freeport and Vicinity. Freeport: W. H. Wagner & Sons, Printers and Binders, 1900. First Edition. Book. Original edition, actual publication year unknown, probably before 1900, possibly 180s. Oblong string tied dark gray wraps, about 7 1/2" x 9 x 1/2". Illustrated with half-tones of public buildings & homes in Freeport, Illinois. Stated is "Photographs by Wareham. Grouping by Bolender." On the "net" is the following information on J. L. Wareham. "John L. Wareham - photographer, Obituary in 1879 he returned to Freeport and became one of the leading photographers of this city. The picture industry at that early date was at the "tin type" stage and it was necessary for him to make his own dry plates for making pictures. Of recent years he has been doing much of the commercial photography for factories and railroads in this vicinity. (Jan. 31, 1930 Freeport Journal Standard)." There was also a photographer, C. H. Wareham, about the same time. I believe that the best known of the two, J. L., is the likely author. Freeport is in Stephenson County & was the site of the famous Abraham Lincoln - Stephen Douglas second presidential candidate debate. This rare copy in fair condition because: An applied cover photo is missing, and the front cover is torn vertically at the top of just inside the binding corner & then angles diagonally. Tear goes down the cover 4 1/2". Else good condition. 29 total leaves with photos on one side of 27. Title page. Two page print material, "Freeport, Illinois". The pages are in great shape. Curiously, threre is a reverse printing of the title page on the verso, and the type of the second of the two page information leaf shows through on the recto, somewhat competing with the type on the recto. We have chosen not to even professionally repair this copy, deferring to what the eventual owner will want to do. This book is truly rare and research shows that copies are found only in three libraries worldwide. Fair. Paperback. (#SHEL565) $300.00
