Center For Conflict Management

The Center for Conflict Management provides confidential assistance to all students in

mediating complaints or conflicts. An Ombud is available to offer informal assistance in resolving University-related problems, especially those that students believe are not being adequately addressed through usual procedures. The Ombud is independent of the Univer- sity's formal administrative structure and provides a forum in which all sides of an issue can be discussed in an objective manner. The Center for Conflict Management is located in the Social Science Building, Room 5036, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment with the Student Ombud, call 7/423-6299.

KSU 1101/KSU1102

As approved by the Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee (UPCC), all

first-time, full-time students entering the university with fewer than 15 semester hours are required to take KSU 1101 or KSU 1102. This requirement should be satisfied during the students' first term of enrollment at Kennesaw State University.

KSU 1101—The First-Year Experience course is an academically oriented, 3-hour course that acquaints you with higher education, the campus, strategies for success in college-level courses, ethical decision-making skills, and major/career exploration.

KSU 1102—Communities for LeArning SuccesS (CLASS) allow a cohort of 20 to 25 stu- dents to enroll in the same sections of two to five first-year classes that have integrated content designed around a theme. Communities with their titles, descriptions, and courses can be found on the CLASS website at www.kennesaw.edu/university_studies/learning_communities/.

All first-year residential students are required to join a learning community (KSU 1102). This is a continuation of the policy regarding first-year residential students that has been in effect since Fall 2003.

All first-year commuter students taking a full load (at least 12 credit hours) are required to take either a stand-alone section of KSU 1101 (a three-credit hour elective course) or join a learning community (KSU 1102). First-year commuter students transferring to KSU with more than 15 credit hours or part-time students are not required to take 1101 or 1102. However, they are welcome to do so if they feel either experience will benefit their transition to KSU.

Biology majors can sign up for BIOL 2101 to satisfy this requirement since it is a discipline-specific first-year seminar. If you have questions, please contact the Department of University Studies at 7/423-6207.

The Center For Health Promotion and Wellness

The Center for Health Promotion and Wellness (aka, the Wellness Center) encourages

students and employees to assume more responsibility for their health and well-being through awareness and education. Our primary goal is to enhance and provide a balance in the intel- lectual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, and spiritual development of the whole person. We also strive to provide an environment that is supportive of positive health prac- tices. Programming focuses on helping students and employees reduce lifestyle risk factors. The Center also serves as a learning center for future exercise and health science students.

The Center for Health Promotion and Wellness, in Room 131 of the Student Recreation

and Wellness Center, promotes wellness through a variety of avenues including:

  • University Events: Lunch-n-Learns, health fair, guest speakers, health screenings, quit smoking classes, CPR classes, eating disorders awareness week, national collegiate alcohol awareness week, and the Great American Smokeout.

  • Health Assessments: Check out your current level of health by having your blood pres- sure, heart rate, hearing, vision, body mass index, weight, and height checked.

  • Fitness Assessments: How is your fitness level? We offer MicroFit computerized fitness evaluations for cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular strength, and flexibility. The computerized testing allows for pre and post test comparisons.

  • Educational Materials: The Wellness Library contains videos, books, magazines, jour- nals, newsletters, and brochures on a variety of health and wellness topics. The Center also has computer programs where you can analyze your diet, assess your stress level, look up prescription drug information, and get healthy cooking tips and recipes. Hours are M-Th 9-6, Fri. 9-5 and Saturdays 9-Noon. For more information call 7/423-6394 or visit www. kennesaw.edu/col_hhs/wellness.
