13. Programme structures and requirements, levels, modules, credits and awards

The programme is offered via two distinct modes of study:

  1. As a one year full-time programme, based at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus

  2. As a part-time modular programme for executives, based at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus and/or through the Hellenic Management Association (HMA) in Athens Greece. In this mode of study, students can complete the programme in a minimum of 22 months of study and a maximum of five years of study. The programme allows students to move between locations if required/desired

In neither mode of study, does the programme allow advanced standing based on APL/APEL principles, because of the importance it places on ‘peer group’ learning.

Key aspects of the programme structure include:

  1. A compulsory non-credit bearing induction module of two days duration for both modes of study. While this module is not assessed, and does not form part of the ‘mainstream’ learning opportunities associated with the programme, it makes a crucial contribution to the overall learning outcomes of the programme. This run both in Canterbury and Athens. During this module students:

    • Are introduced to the programme structure, philosophy and content

    • Are inducted to the University’s ICT, library and other learning support systems

    • Learn to work together in real and virtual learning sets. For the modular programme, so far as practicable, these learning sets will be formed on a geographical basis to facilitate ‘face to face’ meetings of the learning sets

    • Are introduced to the programme assessment methodologies

    • Participate in leadership development exercises

    • Participate in influencing, negotiating and presentation skills activities

    • Develop initial learning relationships with the programme tutors

    • Are introduced to the management skills development approach of the programme which suffuses the subsequent learning opportunities

  2. Following the induction module, full-time students pursue Stage 1 of the programme in a ‘traditional’ mode of academic study, i.e. via a combination of classroom-based tuition combined with on-line study and independent and group learning. In the first semester of the academic year, students study four compulsory modules (see below for details). In the second semester, they study the remaining three compulsory modules and two elective modules (see below for details). Examinations take place (for all taught modules) during the university examination period.

  3. Following the induction module, modular part-time executive students at Canterbury will pursue the programme via one week teaching blocks over the 2 year period. There will be 5 in Yr One (including Induction) and 5 in Year Two.

  4. Students pursuing the executive programme in Athens, Greece, will, after the induction module complete their programme using a weekend format (Fri-Sun) with each module being completed over 2 weekends.

5. Care is taken to ensure the managerial relevance of the programme via a support programme of visits from practicing managers and site visits.

6. After demonstration of achievement of learning outcomes in the examinations (and any associated assessment work) students will then proceed to Stage 2 of the programme; the two written reports.

7. Students successfully completing Stage 1 of the programme who do not complete, or who fail to achieve passes in the two written reports, will be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma, provided they obtain 150 credits in the taught elements of the course.
