2.4.3 Management of HSW in Lagos Africa’s largest city, Lagos, generates between 3.1 million and 4 million of tons of waste annually (Kofoworla, 2007; Ogwueleka, 2009 in Aliu, et al, 2014). This translates to 1.1 kg/cap/day (Kofoworola, 2007). As at 2015, LAWMA averred that daily solid waste generation figure for Lagos state was 13,000 metric tonnes, which translates to 4.7 million metric tons per annum (Vanguard News, 2015). Sadly, only an estimated 1.8 million metric tons was collected and landfilled in 2014 (LAWMA, 2017). This figure represents 38.3% of total annual volume of MSW generated in Lagos in 2014 implying that collection rate is far lower than expected, and this will obviously affect revenue generation, which is critical for running the waste management process. It may therefore be safe to conclude that about 1.9 million metric tons of waste, which could not be collected were lost into the waste stream, in public drains, open places or burnt in neighbourhoods (see figure 5 below.
