At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held in Queen;’s Hotel at 6.45 p.m.

I Minutes

The following Minutes were read and approved:

(a) Annual General Meeting – 8th October 1958

(b) Special General Meeting - 8th October 1958

(c) –do- - 1st April 1959

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 24th November 1958, 4th February 1959, 11th March 1959, 25th May 1959, 11th September 1959 and 18th September 1959.


II. Accounts

The Boxmaster’s Cash Account for the year ended 15th September 1959 was submitted along with the relative Vouchers.

The Deacon reported that for the first time for many years the Income exceeded that expenditure by £21. 2/-. He considered that this was a most satisfactory state of affairs. The Accounts were approved on the Motion of Ex-Deacon George Brown seconded by Mr W A Findlay.
III. Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon.

On the motion of Deacon Robert S May, Boxmaster Ralph Pride was unanimously elected Deacon for the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his thanks to the Members of the Craft for the honour they had paid him in appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his endeavour to serve the Craft to the best of his ability.

He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon Robert S May.

The presentation of an Ex-Deacons Badge to Mr May was made by the new Deacon. Mr May stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon of the Bonnetmaker Craft for the past year and thanked the Boxmaster and Members of the Committee for their co-operation and assistance.
(b) Boxmaster.

On the motion of the Deacon Dr George H Smith was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year, in accepting office Dr Smith thanked the Members of the Craft for the honour thru had paid him in appointing him to the high office.


(c) Committee.

It was intimated that Mr Walter Smith, Mr David Shepherd, Dr George Smith and Mr Alan Lemon retired and were not eligible for re-election. The following Members were elected to the Committee to hold office for two years namely: Messers W A Findlay, Ian P Murray, Lovat Grant and Kenneth W Pritchard. Mr Andrew Swan was elected to the Committee for one year in place of the late Richard Fenton.


(d). Clerk

Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected as Clerk to the Craft.


III. Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in Kidd’s Rooms on 227th November 1959.


V. Any Other Competent Business

The Deacon intimated that the Kirking of the Trades would be held in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday first 18th October and that the Reverend T R S Campbell would be making reference to this at the Supper.

The Clerk reported that the Banner had been repaired through the good offices of Mrs Crawford, Wife of the Principal of the College of Art.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman

At Dundee the Third day of November 1959

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Office of the Clerk 148 Nethergate at 5 p.m.

Present: Deacon Ralph Pride, Boxmaster George H Smith, Ex-Deacon Robert S May, Messers Ian p Murray, Kenneth W Pritchard, Andrew Swan and the Clerk

Apologies for absence was intimated for Messers W A Findlay, Lovat Grant and J Greig Sibbald


I. Minutes.

The Minute of Meeting held on 18th September 1959 was read and approved.


II. Initiation Supper.

The Statement of Receipts and Payments of the initiation Supper held on 18th October 1959 which showed a deficit of 6/3d was approved. The Clerk explained that the loss was the result of having to pay engage a musician at £2.2/- and also that the £1. 1/- from one of the Members was already credited in the Accounts ending 15th September 1959. The Committee expressed the opinion that we would have to endeavour to get someone to take the place of Mr Hinchcliffe when he was unable to attend.


III. Arrangements for Annual Dinner.

The arrangements for the Annual Dinner were then discussed.

The Deacon reported that the Lord Provost of Perth Mr Buchan was to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and that Professor Hunter was to propose the Toast of “Her Majesty’s Forces”. Deacon Pride stated that he was endeavouring to obtain one of the Local Territorial Officers to reply to the Toast of “Her Majesty’s Forces” and that the Deacon Convener or other Member from Edinburgh would propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” the Boxmaster would propose the Vote of Thanks.

A discussion followed regarding the price of Tickets and it was decided that this again would be £1. 10/- and that each Member of Committee should receive ten Tickets for sale.

The question of the price of drink charged by the Glass Bucket was discussed and the Members expressed disapproval of Mr Gahan the proprietor charging £3 for a bottle of whisky. The clerk was instructed to state that unless Mr Gahan was to provide the Whisky to the Members at a price not exceeding £2.10/- other arrangements would require to be made.

It was decided that that Sub Committee to make the final arrangements for the Dinner would consist of the Deacon, the Boxmaster, Mr Pritchard, Mr Swan and the Clerk.

In regard to the March Making the Boxmaster stated that he was unable to be present on the 25th of March and the Clerk was instructed to arrange another suitable date, if possible, in March.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman.

At Dundee the Fifth day of January 1960

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Office of the Clerk 148 Nethergate at 515 p.m.

Present: Deacon Ralph Pride, Boxmaster George H Smith, Ex-Deacon Robert S May, Messers W A Findlay, John Johnston Jnr, Ian P Murray, K. W Pritchard, J Greig Sibbald and A Swan and the Clerk

I. The Minute of Meeting held on 3rd November 1959 was read and approved.
II. Annual Dinner

The Statement of Receipts and Payments for the Annual Dinner held on 27th November 1959 was submitted. It showed that a profit of £2. 0. 2d had been made. The Statement was approved.


III. Arrangements for Initiation Meeting.

Arrangements for the Meeting to be held on 1st April were then discussed.

Toast List

The Deacon reported that he had arranged with Mr John Anderson of Birkhill to propose the Toast of ”The City and Trade of Dundee”. It was decided once again to ask Lord Provost Hughes to reply to this Toast. Mr Kenneth Pritchard undertook to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, the reply to be in the hands of the Convener. The usual Toast to “The New Members” would be proposed by the Boxmaster. Mt Ian Murray undertook to propose the Vote of thanks.

A discussion followed regarding an accompanist if and when Mr Hinchcliffe was unable to attend and it was mentioned that Mr Ian Stuart a Member of the Craft was an accomplished pianist.
IV. Applications for Membership

The Clerk reported that Three Applications for Membership had been received.

John W Bett Master Builder Dunmore 9 Baldovan Road Dundee proposed by the Boxmaster.

Ronald Steel Aitken, Solicitor 30 Westfield Road Broughty Ferry proposed by Mr W A Findlay.

James Gibson Dorward Dental Surgeon

6 Forfar Road Dundee Proposed by Mr Lovat Grant.

The Members reported that they expected a few more Applications to be received and it was decided that a further Meeting would require to be held about the middle of March to pass the present Applications and any further Applications.
V. Correspondence.

A letter which had been received some considerable time ago from Mr Edward R Simpson, Clerk to the Nine Incorporated Trades suggested that Biennial dinners of the Nine Incorporated Trades should be held was then read to the Meeting. After a full discussion it was agreed that the Bonnetmaker Craft should support this function and the Clerk was instructed to write Mr Edward R Simpson accordingly and point out however that the Bonnetmaker Craft would continue to hold their Annual Dinner which is usually towards the end of November.


VI Annual Dinner

The place for holding the Annual Dinner was then discussed and it was unanimously decided that this year w should hold the Dinner in the Invercarse Hotel. The Clerk then telephoned Mr Lane and it was agreed that the Dinner should be held on Wednesday 30th November.

It was left to Mr Pride to see if he could obtain Lord Boothby to propose the principal Toast.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman.

The Minute of Meeting held on 25th February was read and approved.

Arising out of the Minutes the Clerk reported that the Toast List had now been completed and that The Lord Provost was able to attend. Mr. Hinchliffe would act as Accompanist

Correspondence.

The Clerk read letter which he had received from H.M. Inspector of Taxes requesting production of Copy of the last

Accounts of the Craft. Mr. Findlay stated that he did not think the Inspector of "'axes had any authority to ask for production of these Accounts and after discussion the Clerk was instructed to write to the Inspector of Taxes certifying that all untaxed Interest received by-the Craft was annually returned to the Inspector of Taxes and Tax paid thereon.
Annual Dinner.

The Clerk read a letter received from the Invercarse Hotel and it was decided, to discuss the Menus at a later meeting. The Deacon read a letter received from Lord Boothby's Secretary stating as Lord Boothby was likely to be out of the country this year that he could not commit to a definite appointment at such an early date. After further discussion it was decided to do nothing further regarding the fixing of a principal Guest until the autumn when the Deacon might once again enquire of Lord Boothby was available.

At a Special General Meeting the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queen’s Hotel Dundee at 6.40 p.m.

Initiation Meeting

The arrangements for the Initiation Meeting were then discussed. As the original date for the Making was 30th September and as this clashed with the Dundee Autumn Weekend it was decided to hold the Initiation Meeting on 5th October and the Clerk confirmed this date with the Queen’s Hotel.


Toast List

It was decided that the Toast List should be:

“The City and Trade of Dundee”

“The Nine Incorporated Trades”

“The New Members”

Names were then submitted and it was left to the Deacon and the Clerk to arrange suitable speakers.

The Deacon reported on the progress he had made with Speakers for the Dinner.

I. The Minute of Meeting held on 4th July was read and approved.
II. Initiation Meeting

The arrangements for the Initiation Meeting were then discussed. It was reported that Mr. Thomas Pate was to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” and Ex-Deacon May confirmed that Mr. John Gunning was to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee”. The Clerk reported that Lord Provost McManus would Reply to the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee”. Mr. W A Findlay undertook to propose the Vote of Thanks.


III. Accounts

The Accounts for the year ended 15th September 1960 were then gone over and approved. The Accounts show a loss on the year’s work of £28. 6.10d while the Accounts for the previous year how a profit of £21. 2/-. The Clerk explained the reason for the difference was that e previous year there was an exceptionally large number of new Members and also that one of the candidates had paid his Entrance Fee but was not admitted until the following year and the proportion payable to the Nine Trades was not paid until this year. In view of the position of the Accounts Mr. Findlay suggested that an increased payment might be charged to new Members and it was suggested that this matter might be raised at the next Meeting of the Eighteen Fund Court.


IV. Applications for Membership

The Clerk reported that two Applications for Membership had been received namely:

Ralph William Recordon Carpet Manufacturer Riverview Victoria Road Broughty Ferry proposed by Mr. Charles G Lang.

Alexander K Tulloch Ophthalmic Surgeon 20 Jedburgh Road Dundee proposed by the Boxmaster.

The Members reported that they were hopeful of obtaining the consent of the following gentlemen to become Members namely:

James Hamilton Surveyor 53 Mains Loan Dundee

Gerald Alexander Burnett Chartered Surveyor 5 Duntrune Terrace West Ferry

Lewis Maurice Hill Jute Merchant & Manufacturer Rocknowe Reres Road Broughty Ferry

Alexander Dickson Williams Solicitor 64 Seafield Road Broughty Ferry

The Committee decided that If Application Forms were received from these Applicants they should be admitted after consultation with the Deacon the Boxmaster and the Clerk. Authority was also given to accept any other suitable Applications provided these were also approved of by the Deacon the Boxmaster and the Clerk.


V. Annual Dinner

The Deacon reported that he was hopeful that Sir George Beresford Creddick MP would propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and that “The Nine Incorporated Trades” would be proposed by the Reverend R F V Scott and “The Clergy” would be proposed by Provost Pate Carnoustie.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman
