At Dundee the Seventeenth day of October 1964

At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queens Hotel Dundee at 6.45 p.m.

In welcoming the Members the Deacon stated that he regretted that there was such a poor turnout at this Annual General meeting
I. Minutes

The following Minutes were read and approved:

(a) Annual General Meeting - 26th September 1963

(b) Special General Meeting - 26th September 1963

(c) -do- 5th March 1964

He Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 24th October 1693, 28th November 196, 6th February 1964. 16th April 1964 and 2nd September 1964.


II. Accounts

The Boxmaster’s Cash Account for the year ended 30th June 1964 was submitted. The Clerk stated that the Abstract of the Accounts had been circulated to all the Members. The Account was approved on the motion of A J Lindsay Robertson seconded by Mr T Lindsay Gray.


III. Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon.

Boxmaster J Greig Sibbald proposed and Ex-Deacon Ralph Pride seconded the re-election of Deacon Davis S Moyes. Mr Moyes thanked the Members for their confidence and stated he would again do his utmost to uphold the high traditions of the Office.

(b). Boxmaster. On the motion of Ex-Deacon Dr George H Smith seconded by Ex-Deacon J A Davidson Boxmaster J Greig Sibbald was unanimously re-elected.

(c) Committee

It was intimated that Messers Louis M Hill, John R Conacher, Leslie F Mitchell and Alastair M Hill retired and were not eligible for re-election. It was also pointed out that owing to Dr Glyn Thomas having gained promotion and leaving the District another Committee Member would require to be appointed for one year. The following Members were elected to the Committee to hold office of two years namely:

Mr Lovat Grant proposed by Boxmaster J Greig Sibbald seconded by Ex-Deacon D George H Smith.

Mr James Dorward proposed by Mr Lovat Grant seconded by Mr Leslie F Mitchell.

Mr D Gauldie proposed by Boxmaster J Greig Sibbald seconded by Ralph Pride.

Dr O Taylor Brown proposed by Deacon David S Moyes seconded by (blank)

Mr Spencer Dryden was elected to hold office for one year.

(d) Clerk. Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.


IV. Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 2nd December 1964.


V. Kirking of the Trades

The Deacon intimated that the Kirking of he Trades would be held in St Andrew’s Church on 11th October and he hoped that there would be a large turnout of Bonnetmakers at the Kirking.

VI. Any Other competent Business – Clerk’s Salary

The Deacon referred to the Minute of the Annual General meeting last year when the Committee had to look into the question of increasing the Clerk’s Salary. He stated that is was fully discussed at the last Meeting of Committee but in view of the fact that the income of the Craft showed a loss for the current year the Clerk was insistent that no increase should meantime be made.


VII. Lockit Book

The Deacon stated that very shortly a new Lockit Book would be required and that the Committee had considered the matter and Mr Chessor Matthew and several members of his Staff were assisting in this mater.

Mr Chessor Matthew spoke regarding this and it was thought that the cost would be at least £100. The Members gave the Committee full authority to have the necessary new Lockit Book made.

The Deacon also reported that it had been suggested by Mr R Glyn Thomas that enquiries should be made to see if the existing Lockit Book could be microfilmed and the Deacon undertook to look into this matter and to discuss it at the next Meeting of the Committee.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of thanks to the Chairman.

The Minute of Meeting held on 2nd September 1964 was read and approved.

The question of the Clerk’s Salary was again discussed and it was decided that at the next full Meeting of the Committee this matter would again be brought up.
II. Arrangements Re Annual Dinner

Specimen Menus from the Invercarse Hotel were submitted and it was decided to accept the Menu at 22/6d with certain alterations. It was arranged that the Boxmaster, Mr Spencer Dryden and the Clerk would call at the Invercarse Hotel to make the final arrangements to-morrow.


III. Toast List

The Deacon submitted the Toast List which was approved. It was decided to ask Mr Chessor L Matthews to propose the necessary vote of thanks. It was also decided that Mr D R Laird’s Trio would be asked to provide music during the Dinner.


IV. Lockit Book

The Clerk submitted estimates for the cost of a new Lockit Book received from T M Sparks & Son Ltd which amounted to £110 and also stated that the metal work on the Book including the Lock would cost approximately £20. It was suggested that Mr Chessor L Matthew might be approached with a view to obtaining a design and if necessary a Competition amongst his Students and a prize would be given for the best design. It was also arranged that s Sub-Committee consisting of the Deacon, Boxmaster, Dr George Smith and Mr Spencer Dryden should meet in the Clerk’s Office on 30th November to make final arrangements regarding he Dinner.

I. The Minute of Meeting held on 2nd September 1964 was read and approved.
II. Arrangements for March Making

The Deacon reported that it was proposed to hold the March Making in the Queen’s Hotel on Friday 19th March 1965. It was decided that the Toasts would be: “The City and Trade of Dundee”; “The Nine Incorporated Trades” and the “New members”.

It was suggested that Mr D L Urquhart or Mr John Pate might be asked to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and that Mr Harold Adams be asked to propose “The Nine Incorporated Trades” whom failing Mr Scott C Henderson. It was suggested that Mr Kenneth Pritchard be asked to propose the Vote of Thanks. It was decided that the price of the tickets would be £!
III. Annual Dinner

The Statement of Receipts and Payments of the Annual Dinner was submitted and this showed a loss of £24.17. 3d. The Clerk explained that this year Invercarse Hotel charges 23/- per cover against 21/6d last year. It was felt that certain economies would require to be made but these would be considered at a later Meeting.


IV. Lockit Book

Specimen designs for the Lockit Book were considered and the Committee unanimously decided on one of the designs produced, that the locks would not interfere with the design. There was also submitted an amended estimate from Messers T M Sparks & Son. It was suggested that on the front page of the new Lockit Book the Boxmaster’s Crest should be inscribed. It was estimated that the total cost of the Book would be approximately £150 and an appeal should be sent out to the Members. It was suggested that before any further steps be taken a further Meeting of the Committee should be held on 11th February and that Mr Harrington and Mr Greensmith should be asked if possible to attend.

I. Consideration of New Lockit Book

A full discussion regarding the New Lockit Book took place and it was decided that the leather should be a dark red and the paper white as stated in T M Sparks and Son’s estimate of 18th January and that the material for the binding and locks should be silver or gilted. Mr Greensmith undertook to contact the printer Mr Cornfoot and thereafter to submit estimates of the Cost.

The Deacon thanked Mr Harrington and Mr Greensmith for their assistance and attendance at the Meeting.

After Mr Harrington and Mr Greensmith left the Meeting arrangements for the Initiation Meeting, Making and Supper to be held on 19th March were then discussed and the Clerk submitted Toast List which was approved. It was confirmed that the price of the tickets should be £1.

An Application for Membership received from Mr George D Forwell Medical Practitioner 4 Strathspey Place West Ferry was submitted and approved. It was expected that further Applications would be received and it was decided that if an Application was received from a certain person a full meeting of the Committee should take place. The Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk were authorised to approve of any other Applications.

The Deacon undertook to refer to the New Lockit Book at the next Meeting of the Craft and thereafter to lodge an Appeal for donations to the members.

III Report on Lockit Book

The Clerk reported that he had a recent Meeting with Mr Greensmith and that the Lockit Book was nearing completion. A full discussion followed regarding the inscription to be inserted on the front of the Book and it was decided that the Crest of the Craft should be inscribed on the fly leaf and that on the first page the names of those who had been responsible for making the Lockit Book should be inscribed together with the names of the present Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk. It was decided that two pages should be left for the names of the Subscribers of the Fund for the Lockit book. It was also arranged that Mr Greensmith should inscribe the docquet for the First Making to be noted in the Book.

The Deacon undertook to draft a Circular of Appeal to the Members to cover the cost of the Lockit Book and also, if necessary, the cost of a new Banner. It was agreed that Mr Ralph Pride might be asked to assist in the drafting of this Circular.
IV. Arrangements for Annual General Meeting and Making

It was confirmed that the Annual General Meeting and Making would be held in the Queen’s Hotel Dundee on Wednesday 6th October 1965. The Toast List would be “The Nine Incorporated Trades”“, The Deacon Boxmaster and Clerk” and “The New Members”. It was suggested that Mr Gordon S Watson might be approached to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” whom failing Mr Sinclair Gauldie. Ex-Deacon George H Smith undertook to propose the Toast of “The Deacon Boxmaster and Clerk”


V. Annual Dinner

The Boxmaster reported that Mr W A Fairhurst was to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and that the “Nine Incorporated Trades” would be proposed by Dr Ritchie. The Reply to the Toast of “Our Guests” would be proposed by the Deacon Convener Mr Gamble of the Bonnetmakers and Weaver Craft of Glasgow.


VI. Audit of Accounts

The Deacon undertook to Audit the Accounts as the Boxmaster was leaving on holiday tomorrow.

In welcoming the Members the Deacon made special reference to Mr David Rollo who had travelled up from the South of England to attend this function. Mr Rollo was made a Bonnetmaker on 4th March 1914 and his father was Deacon of the Craft in 1889. A very warm welcome was extended by the Members to Mr Rollo.

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings had been held on 5th November 1964, 21st January 1965, 11th February 1965 and 23rd August 1965.
He Deacon stated that arising out of the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting he had to report that the Lockit Book has been made and he paid tribute to Mr Chessor Matthew for his assistance and to Mr Bernard Farrington and Mr John Greensmith of the Art College and Mr James Cornfoot a Member of the staff of T M Sparks & Son Ltd. The Book had not yet been finally completed but was ready for signature of all the Members this evening. Mr Chessor Matthew also spoke regarding this matter.
II. Accounts

The Clerk read over the Boxmasters cash account for the year ended 30th June 1965 which had already been circulated to the Members. The Clerk made an explanation regarding the loss sustained during the past year. The Account was then approved on the motion of Mr Cecil G Black seconded by Mr J R Gellatly.


III. Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon

On the motion of David S Moyes seconded by Ex-Deacon George H Smith, Boxmaster J Greig Sibbald was unanimously elated Deacon for the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his thanks to he Members of the Craft in appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his earnest endeavour to serve the Craft to the best of his ability. He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon David S Moyes.

The presentation of an Ex-Deacons Badge was made to Ex-Deacon David S Moyes by the new Deacon. Mr Moyes stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon for the past two years and thanked the Boxmaster and Members of the Committee for their co-operation and assistance.


(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of Deacon J Greig Sibbald seconded by Mr John Allardyce Dr O Taylor Brown was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting the office Dr Brown thanked the Members of the Craft for the honour they had paid him in appointing him to this high office.


(c) Clerk.

On the Motion of the Deacon Mr Frank Hay was unanimously elected Clerk to the Craft.

In accepting office Mr Hay again expressed to the Members his thanks for his re-appointment but stated that, after due consideration he had decided that it would be in the interests of the Craft to have a new Clerk appointed and he intimated that he intended to resign office next year.
(d) Committee

It was intimated that Kenneth W Pritchard, Spencer Dryden, and Chessor L Matthew retired and were not eligible of re-election and that a new Member of Committee would require to be appointed in place of Dr O Taylor Brown. The following Members were elected to Committee to hold office for two years namely: Mr Alan Lemon, Mr John Allardyce & Mr Harold M Adams and Mr Ralph Pride were elected to hold office for one year.


IV. Annual Dinner.

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 24th November 1965.


V. Kirking of he Trades – 10th October 1965

Reverend T R S Campbell stated that the Kirking of the Trades would take place in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 10th isn’t and he appealed to the Members to attend in great numbers. He stated tat as a new Lockit book had been in use for the first time this evening with completion of the old Book it was the end of an era and he requested permission to display the old Lockit Book on the Communion Table at the Kirking of the Trades on Sunday. This permission was unanimously granted.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman.

I. The Minute of Meeting held on 23rd August 1965 was read and approved.
II. Pensions

Letters from the present Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that these Applications should again be submitted to the Nine Trades Court. The Committee authorised the Deacon and the Boxmaster to sign the customary List of Poor.

An Application from Mrs Winifred Scott widow of the late George N Scott was read to the Meeting. While the Committee was very sympathetic towards the Application they did not consider that in the circumstances they would be justified in recommending the payment of a pension by the Nine Trades Court. It was however decided after discussion to make a single grant of £40 to Mrs Scott from out own Benevolent Fund.
III. New Lockit Book

The Clerk submitted the List of Subscribers to the new Lockit book and informed the Meeting that at the moment £276.15/- had been collected from 108 Members. It was felt that the response from the Members subscribing was very satisfactory but it was also felt that those who did not subscribe might be sent a reminder. The Deacon undertook to attend to this matter.


IV. Annual Dinner – 24th November 1965

The Deacon stated that he had completed the Toast List which was as follows: “The City and Trade of Dundee” would be proposed by W A Fairhurst Esq CBE, MI AtrctE, M Inst HE. The reply would be in the hands of lord Provost Maurice McManus LL, JP. The Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” would be proposed by Lord Provost Dr Robert Ritchie MB, ChB of Perth and the Reply to the Toast of “Our Guests” would be in the hands of Deacon Elson Hamble JP of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow,

Specimen Menus were submitted and it was decided that the 22/- Menu should be selected if chicken could be substituted for roast duckling. The Deacon and the Clerk undertook to contact Invercarse Hotel in the matter.

It was decided that the usual loudspeaker equipment should be hired from Larg & Sons. After a full discussion it was agreed that no Orchestra should be engaged. It was again suggested that the Town’s Officer Mr Thomson should be asked to undertake the task of Toastmaster.
