Arising from the Minutes

The Clerk submitted a Statement of the expenses involved in the Supper held on 24th March 1976 and this showed a loss of £30.95. This arose as at a Ticket price of £3.50 the surplus was marginal and rather fewer had attended than had been hoped. In addition the drinks for the Deacon’s Table and the Boxmaster’s Table had amounted to £28.00. However the October 1975 Statement had shown a surplus of £7.39 and the Annual Dinner a surplus of £47.24 so that at the end of the day there was a surplus on the Supers and the Dinner of £2223..05.

Arrangements for Annual General Meeting

The draft Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1976 were submitted and approved. These showed an amount of income over expenditure of £14.97 which was considered satisfactory. This had arisen in that more new Members had been admitted and also that at the March Supper the new entrants had paid for their own Supper Tickets. One problem however was the increasing cost of postages and it was suggested that a postage fund be discussed at the Annual General Meeting.

The Clerk intimated that the Members of the Committee falling to retire at the Annual General Meeting were Messers P S Ridgway, F G Allan and J B Huston. Four new Committee Members would require to be appointed. The Deacon thanked the retiring Members for their work on behalf of the Craft for the past two years.

An application for Membership to the Craft was submitted from Mr Ian M Ross and it was anticipated that further applications would be received. It was agreed that not more than six persons be admitted at the October Making. It was remitted to the Deacon, Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve the applications to be forthcoming.

It was remitted to the Deacon to arrange the Proposer of the Toast to The Trade and Prosperity of Tayside Region and it was hoped that the Reply would be by the Convener Duncan Millar. The Toast to The Nine Incorporated Trades would be proposed by Mr Hugh Carlton, the Reply by the Convener. The Toast to the Guests would be proposed by the Deacon, the Reply by Mr Kenneth R C McDonald Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow. The Vote of Thanks would be by the Boxmaster.

Ralph Pryde Bequest

A letter was read from Principal A G Newlands of Dundee College of Commerce advising that the yearly prize ceremony was to be discontinued and suggesting the Craft might want to keep its links with the Commerce in a different way by allowing the annual sum of £10 to be used for the purpose of purchasing library books of a professional nature. Each book would be infaced with a label indicating that it had been gifted by the Bonnetmaker Craft. The Committee unanimously agreed to this procedure.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.
