Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon

On the motion of Deacon O Taylor Brown seconded by Ex-Deacon Carlton Boxmaster A C McNab was unanimously elected Deacon for the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his thanks to the Members of the Craft for appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his earnest endeavour to serve the Craft to the best of his ability. He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown. The presentation of the Ex-Deacons Badge was made to Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown by the new Deacon and Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon for the past two years and thanked the Boxmaster and Members of the Committee for their co-operation and is.
(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of Deacon A C McNab seceded by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown Mr Chessor L Matthew was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting Office Mr Matthew thanked the Members for the honour they paid him in appointing him to such High Office.

(c) Clerk

On the motion of the Ddeacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously elected Clerk to the Craft.

(d) Committee

It was intimated that Messers Lyle Bowie and Malcolm Currie retired for Office and also Mr Iain Lamont on his appointment as Clerk.

The following were appointed as Members of Committee to hold Office for two years:

Mr Scott Henderson proposed by Mr Law and seconded by Ex-Convener Drummond.

Mr Roger Roscoe proposed by Mr D Millar and seconded by Mr M Currie

Mr R D Bruce proposed by Mr H M Adams seconded by Mr C Allardyce.


Annual Dinner

The
Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in Invercarse Hotel on Friday 28th November 1969.


Kirking of Ttrades

The Deacon reminded Members that the Kirking of the Trades would take place in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 12th October and he expressed the hope that as many Members as possible would attend.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.

I. Minutes

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 4h September 1969 was read and approved.


II. Pensions

Letters from the present Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no changes on their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that these Applications should again be submitted to the Nine Trades Court.

The Commodities authorised he Deacon and the Boxmaster to sign the necessary List of Poor.

The Clerk expressed the View that more interest should be taken in the Pensioners by the Committee and after discussion it was agreed to leave it to the Deacon and the Boxmaster to pay visits to the Pensioners as and when they thought appropriate. Consideration was also given to the possibility that there might well be other persons who would be entitled to and in need of a Pension and it was agreed that the Clerk take steps to let it be known that in certain pensions could be made available to the relatives of deceased Craftsmen and that by writing to these who would have knowledge of such persons in needy circumstances Members of the Committee would themselves keep in mind the existence of the Pension Fund should the knowledge of any acceptable person come to their notice.

III. Annual Dinner

Arrangements for the Annual Dinner were considered and the Convener of the Dinner Committee Mr John Allardyce submitted specimen Menus. It was agreed that the 30/- Menu be selected and after consideration of the other costs it was agreed that the price of the Tickets be fixed at £2. 2. 0d

The Deacon stated that the provisional Toast List was as follows:

“The City and Trade of Dundee” to be proposed by the Earl of Dundee, the Reply by Lord Provost Alexander Mackenzie.

The Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” to be proposed by Deacon Walter A Crichton of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow and the Reply by Convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades Leslie F Mitchell

“The Guests” would be proposed by himself and the reply in the hands of Chief Constable John J R Little.

Boxmaster Chessor L Matthews would give the “Vote of Thanks”

The Toast List was provisional as he still had to have the confirmation from the Earl of Dundee. It was agreed that the Loud speaker Equipment be obtained from Messers Larg & Son and also that Mr Thompson be asked to undertake the duties of Toastmaster.

It was further agreed that the Earl of Airlie be invited to the Top Table in addition to the Speakers, Ex-Deacons, Chaplain, and Convener of the Three Trades, Ex-Clerk Frank Hay, Free Craftsman Drever and the Lord Dean of Guild.
IV. March Making

It was intimated that the March Making would be held on 18th March 1970 when the rooms had been booked at Queen’s Hotel. The Deacon asked that consideration be given to new Members and a note of other names passed to the Clerk.


V. Ex-Deacon Taylor Brown made reference to the Ralph Pride Bequest and possible uses to which it could be put. Suggested purposes were a Prize to the Technical College, the examination of the Craft Records by an Archivist or a grant to an Industrial Archaeologist. It as agreed to give further consideration to the matter at the next Meeting.

I. Minutes

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 4h September 1969 was read and approved.


II. Arising out of the Minutes

The Deacon stated that it was his attention to pay a visit to the Pensioners during the course of the year.


III. Ralph Pride Bequest

Consideration was given to a suitable purpose to which the funds of the Ralph Pride Bequest could be put and two suggestions were considered.

One, that the records and documents of the Craft be micro filmed and the Boxmaster agreed to investigate the cost of this; and two that a prize be donated to a College preferably for Work relating to the Social or Individual History of Dundee. it was agreed to consider these suggestions at the next Meeting of the Committee and in the meantime Member would give ore thought to the Second point, particularly as too the Form of a Prize, which college should be approached and the topic for the prize.
IV. Applications for Membership

The Clerk submitted applications for Membership from Messers A S McInroy, R S Gray Junior and A S Brand. The first of these named had been held over from the previous Making. These Applications were approved by the Committee.

A further list of prospective Applicants was submitted and these were approved on the understanding that the sponsors would lodge the necessary Forms with the Clerk and Authority to approve of these Applications given to the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to approve of these Applications but that with the limitation that not more than eight Applicants be admitted at this time.
V. Toast List

It was agreed tat the Toasts be “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, “The Bonnetmaker Craft” and the “New Members”. It was suggested that Dr C L Weir be asked to propose the Toast to “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, and the Reply by Convener Mitchell. It was suggested that the Toast to “The Bonnetmaker Craft” be proposed by Mr Kenneth Ross and the Deacon to Reply. The Deacon undertook to arrange to contact these Speakers. The Boxmaster would propose the Toast of “The New Members”, A specimen Menu was submitted and the Clerk was instructed to make the final arrangements with he Queen’s Hotel.

Consideration was give to the Actual Toasts which were proposed at the Supper and it was suggested that these might well be varied and not necessarily allays the traditional Nine Incorporated Trades and Bonnetmaker Craft. Different Profession or Institution could be selected for each Supper and speaker. It was agreed to consider this point at the next Meeting of the Committee.
VI Securities

The Clerk reported that intimation had been received from the Bank of England that the Holding o f£500 3& Savings Bonds 1960/70 could now be exchanged into 8½% Treasury Stock 1980/82. It was agreed that this be done and the appropriate forms were signed by the Deacon the Boxmaster and the Clerk.

It was intimated that the Autumn Making would take place on 7th October being the Wednesday before the Kirking of the Trades and that that Annual Dinner would be held on Wednesday 25th November 1970.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 5th February 1970 was read and approved.


Ralph Pride Bequest

Further consideration was given to the use to which the funds of the Ralph Pride Bequest could be put and the Boxmaster reported that he had approached the University of Dundee who had indicated that Documents of the Craft could be micro filmed at a cost of less than 1d per page. It was accordingly agreed to go ahead and remitted to the Deacon, the Boxmaster and the Clerk to consider which records and documents should be micro-filmed with a limit of £100 as the maximum amount to be expended.

It was agreed that the Funds be further utilised in the Donation of a Prize and that there be three of these if £10 each per annum for an initial period of 3 years to each of: Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee College of Commerce and Dundee College of Technology. It was agreed that the Clerk write to the Principals of these Colleges advising them of the intention to donate the prize and enquiring if it would be acceptable should one of the Colleges not wish to accept the prize then the College of Nursing could be approached to come in place thereof.

Annual General Meeting and Supper

It was intimated that the Annual General Meeting and supper would be on 7th October 1970 and agreed that not more than 8 Applicants be admitted at the Making. Various names were suggested and it was agreed that the Leat of Applicants be approved at the next Meeting of he Committee which would be held in September. Meantime Members of the Committee would make approaches to suitable persons.

As regards he Toasts there would be he formal Toast to The Nine Incorporated Trades with the Reply by the Convener. The suggestion that the main Toast be to an Organisation or Institution outside the Craft was approved and it was agreed to make further detailed arrangements for this at he next Meeting.


Tickets

The arrangements for the sale of Tickets for Makings and he Annual Dinner were considered and it was suggested that each Member of the Committee be given a List of Craftsmen whom he would approach personally. This would ensure a wider distribution of the Tickets and better attendances and it was agreed to go into more detail as to oh w this could be arranged at the next Meeting.

Arrangements for Annual Dinner

Applications for Admission to the Craft were submitted from Mr Gordon L Caird, Mr J Munro and Mr D H Tweedie. These were approved as also the Application by Mr R S Gray Junior which had been held over from the March Meeting. It was intimated that it was expected that applications would be received from Mr T W Caird and Mr I L F Smith and these were also approved.

He Toast List was discussed and agreed that the Toasts would be to the Nine Incorporated Trades and to the Legal Profession. It was remitted to the Deacon and the Clerk to make the arrangements and should there be difficulty in obtaining Speakers then another Profession could be chosen at the discretion of the Deacon. There would also be the usual Toast to the New Members.

The Menu for the supper was considered and agreed. It was further agreed that the cost of the Tickets for the supper be 25/-.


Audit of Accounts

The Accounts of the Craft for the year ending 30th June 1970 were submitted and approved. These had been audited by the Boxmaster.


Ralph Pride Bequest

The Clerk reported that he had written to the Principals of each of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (College) of Commerce and Dundee College of Technology intimating the proposed donation of a prize of £10 to each for a three year period and each had replied accepting with pleasure.

The Boxmaster reported that he had arranged with the University of Dundee that the original. Lockit Book be micro-filmed and that a cost of less than 1d per page. The arrangements for this were now in hand.

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 23rd October 1969, 5th February 1970, 18th March 1970, 13th August 1970 and 16th September 1970.

The Clerk submitted the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1969 an Abstract of which had already been circulated to Members. He reported that the Income over Expenditure amounted to £17/2d which was less than he previous year but factors contributing to this were that fewer new Members had been admitted, there had been the cost of the Badges for the Ex-Deacon and the Ex-Clerk and also additional printing costs for Stationary and Forms. The Accounts were approved on the motion of Mr Nigel Law seconded y Ex-Deacon J Greig Sibbald.

On the motion of Boxmaster Chessor L Matthew seconded by Mr John Allardyce Mr A C McNab was unanimously re-elected Deacon for the ensuing year. Mr McNab thanked the Members for their continued confidence in him and also expressed thanks to his Boxmaster and Members of Committee and he whole Members of the Craft for heir support throughout the year.

(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of the Deacon seconded by Ex-Convener Drummond Mr Chessor L Matthew was unanimously re-elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year.

(c) Committee

It was intimated that Messers Harold M Adams, W K Black, W S Gauldie and John Allardyce retired from Office and were not eligible for re-election.

The following were elected as Members of Committee to serve for two years:

Mr Alan Brown proposed by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown and seconded by Ex-Deacon George Smith

Mr John W Sutherland proposed by Mr W Black seconded by Mr George Muir

Mr Duncan S Miller proposed by Mr Nigel Law and seconded by Mr Frank Hay

Mr R C Ritchie proposed by Ex-Deacon George Smith and seconded by Mr Charles Allardyce.

(d) Clerk

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.


Ralph Pride Bequest

The Deacon intimated that it had been agreed that the income from Mr Ralph Pride’s Bequest be utilised in making a Prize of £10 each to each on – Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee College of Commerce and Dundee College of Technology for three years. Also the historic documents of the Craft were to be micro-filmed and the second Lockit Book of the Craft was presently with the University of Dundee who were arranging this.


Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 25th November 1970.


Kirking of Trades

The Deacon referred to the damage which had been suffered by St Andrew’s Church through lightening but the Kirking of the Trades would still take place and that in the Caird Hall on Sunday 11th October. He expressed the hope that as many Members as possible would attend particularly in view of the circumstances.

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 16th September 1970 was read and approved.


Pensions

Letters from the present Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in the financial circumstances since last year the committee recommended that these applications should again be submitted to the Nine Trades Court. The Committee authorised the Deacon and the Boxmaster to sign the necessary List of Poor.


Autumn Supper

The Accounts for the Supper held on 7th October 1970 were submitted and showed a total expenditure of £92. 9. 3d as against an income from the sale of Tickets of £77.10. 0 meaning a deficit of £14.19. 3d. The Deacon stated that he would meet £10.19. 3 of his and the Boxmaster agreed to meet the Balance of £4 both from their own pockets.

Discussion followed on the practice which had grown up of the Deacon and Boxmaster paying of any loss on Suppers and Dinners and it was agreed that in future the price of tickets should be such as would obviate a loss. Should there be such a loss in the future then consideration should be given at hat time to it being from the funds of the Craft.
Annual Dinner
