Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting held on 13th February 1974 were read and approved.


Arising out of the Minutes

The Clerk submitted a statement showing the expenses involved in the Supper held on 20th March 1974 and this showed a surplus of £19.29. this was considered satisfactory.


Arrangements for Annual General Meeting

The draft Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1974 were submitted and approved. These showed a surplus of Income over Expenditure of £11.20.

The Clerk intimated that the Members of the Committee falling to retire at the Annual General Meeting were Messers A F Bremner, A G Kiddie, J I Merry and I L F Smith. Four new Committee Members would require to be appointed in their place.
Arrangements for Special General Meeting

Applications for admission to the Craft were submitted from Messers James C Richardson and David Ritchie. It was anticipated that further applications would be received and it was agreed that not more then six persons be admitted at the October Making. It was remitted to the Deacon, Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve the applications to be forthcoming.

The Toast List was discussed and it was agreed that the Toasts be to the Nine Incorporated Trades, this to be proposed by the Deacon, and to be replied to by the Convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades. It was further agreed that Dr Dallas Ross be asked to propose the Toast of the Dental Profession, this to be replied to me Mr R P Ogilvie. The vote of thanks would be by Mr J B Devlin.

The Menu for the Supper was considered and approved ant it was agreed that the cost of the tickets be £2.50.


Annual Dinner

It was intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 20th November 19974. The Toast to the City and Trade of Dundee would be proposed by Professor Dr McDonald and as the Lord Provost could not attend arrangements would be mad for another Member of the Town Council to reply. The Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades would be proposed by Mr D M Ross Dean of the Faculty of Advocates and replied to by the Convener. The Deacon would propose the toast of the Guests and the reply would be by Mr W G Rowan Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 30th October 1973. 13th February 1974 and 4th September 1974.


Accounts

The Clerk submitted the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1974 an Abstract of which had bee circulated to Members, he reported that the Income over Expenditure amounted to £11.20, this due in he main to the fact that the proceeds of the sale of Tickets for the Suppers and Dinner had been in excess of the expenses.

The accounts were approved in the motion of Ex-Deacon Drummond seconded by Ex-Deacon O Taylor Brown.
Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon

On the motion of Boxmaster Harold Adams seconded by Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew Dr R t Ritchie was unanimously re-elected Deacon for the ensuing year. Deacon Ritchie thanked the Members for their continued confidence in him and also expressed thanks to his Boxmaster and Members of the Committee and all he Members of the Craft for their support throughout the year.

(b). Boxmaster

On the motion of the Deacon seconded by Ex-Deacon A C McNab Mr Harold Adams was unanimously re-elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year.

(c) It was intimated that Messers I L F Smith, J I Merry, A F Bremner and A G Kiddie retired from office and were not eligible for re-election. The following were appointed as Members of the Committee to ole office for two years.

Mr John Allardyce proposed by Ex-Deacon Chessor Matthew and seconded by Dr A Low

Mr P S Ridgway proposed by Dr A Low seconded by Mr R H Gilbert

Mr F G Allan proposed by Mr Cecil Black and seconded by Ex-Deacon A S Drummond

Mr J B Houston proposed by Boxmaster Harold Adams and seconded by Mr James Law

(d) Clerk

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 20th November 1974


Kirkin of the Trades

The Deacon reminded Members that the Kirkin of the Trade would take place in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 13th October 1941 and he expressed the hope that as many Members as possible would attend.

The Minutes of the Meeting held on 4th September 1974 were read and approved


Arising from the Minutes

The Clerk reported that the proceeds of the sale of Tickets for the supper held on 2nd October 1974 amounted to £107.50 and that the expenses were £103.69 leaving a surplus of £3.81. This was considered satisfactory.


Pensions

Letters from the Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that the five Applications should be submitted to the Nine Trades Court. The Committee authorised the Deacon and Boxmaster to sign the List of Poor.


Annual Dinner

Arrangements for the Annual Dinner were considered and the Clerk submitted specimen Menus. It was agreed that the Menu be selected at a cost of not more than £2.50 and after consideration of other expenses it was agreed that the price of the Tickets be £3.50. It was remitted to the Clerk to make the final arrangements with the Invercarse Hotel.

The Deacon stated that the Toast List was as follows:

The City and Trade of Dundee to be proposed by Professor A J Macdonald and the reply by Bailie Harry Dickson.

The Toast of the Nine Incorporated Trades to be proposed by Mr Donald Ross PC and the reply be Ex-Convener Leslie Mitchell

The Guests would be proposed by the Deacon and the reply by Mr William G Rason Deacon of the Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow.

The Boxmaster would propose the vote of thanks.
March Making

It was agreed that the March Making and Supper be held in the Queen’s Hotel on 19th March 1975 and it was remitted to the Clerk to arrange accordingly.


Miscellaneous

It was agreed that if possible the circular letter to the Members about the March Making be sent out at least three weeks in advance. It was suggested that there be mentioned in the circular the Pensions List and ask if Members knew of any deserving person.

The Minutes of the Meeting held on 23rd October 1974 were read and approved


Arising from the Minutes

The Clerk reported that the five pensioners had been paid in full. However he has recently been advised that one of them, Mrs Edith Soutar had died on 19th January 1975.

The Clerk submitted a Statement showing the expenses involved in the Annual Dinner and this showed a surplus of £1.98. It had been hoped that there would have been a greater surplus but the Dinner had mot been so well attended as previously.
Application for Membership

The Clerk submitted Applications of Membership from Mr J T Crichton, nr D L McPherson and Mr James C Richardson and these gentlemen were approved of by the Committee. Further Applications were expected and it was remitted to the Deacon, the Boxmaster and the Clerk to approve these on the understanding that not more than six new Members be admitted.


Arrangements for Supper on 19th March 1975

It was agreed that the Toast List be the Nine Incorporated Trades, the Bankers and the New Members. The Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades would be proposed by Mr F G Allan and the reply would be by the Convener Mr Edward H Leslie Shepherd. The Toast to the Bankers would be proposed by Mr David Ritchie and replied to by Mr Alexander Anderson. The vote of Thanks would be by either Mr J B Houston or Mr John Allardyce.

Consideration was given to the Menu and it was agreed that the price of the Tickets be £2.50. It was remitted to the Clerk to make the usual arrangements.
Annual Dinner

It was agreed that the Annual Dinner be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 19th November 1975 and consideration was given to the Toasts. It was agreed that the main Toast would be to the Trade and Prosperity of Tayside Region, this to be proposed by Sheriff R R Taylor and the reply by Mr Duncan Miller Convener of the Tayside Region.

The Deacon would give a formal Toast to the City and Trade of Dundee the reply to be by the Lord Provost.

The other Toasts would be the Nine Incorporated Trades, a Speaker to be arranged, and the reply by the Convener. Our Guests would be proposed by the Deacon, the reply by the Deacon of the Incorporation of the Incorporation of Dyers of Glasgow. The Vote of thanks would be by the Boxmaster.

It was mentioned that one of the expensive items at the Dinner was the charge for the hire of the Microphone equipment and it was suggested that Mr James Munro be approached about his for the 1975 Dinner.

It was agreed that the Annual Dinner of r the year 1976 be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 17th November 1976.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

Arising from the Minutes

The Clerk submitted a Statement of the expenses involved in the Supper held on 19th March 19*75 and this showed a loss of £11.84. This arose as at a Ticket cost of £2.50 the expensed were marginal and rather fewer had attended than had been hoped. In addition the drinks for he #deacon’s Table and the Boxmaster’s Table amounted to £18.12 which again had been more than estimated.


Arrangements of Annual General Meeting

The draft Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1975 were submitted and approved. These showed an amount of expenditure over income of £25.84 this arising mainly from the fact that fewer new Members had bee admitted and also the loss on the Supper in March 1975 of £11.84. In the previous year there had been an excess of income over expenditure for the Supper and the Annual Dinner.

The Committee considered ways and means of increasing the income of the Craft and it was agreed that more Members should be urged to attend the Suppers and the Dinner. Consideration must also be given at a future Meeting to an increase in the entry dues by new Members and also whether they should have the Supper free of charge.

The Clerk intimated that the Members of the Committee falling to retire at the Annual General Meeting were Messers W A S Dryden, D H Tweedie, J D Boyd, and J B Devlin. Four new Committee members would require to be appointed in their place.


Arrangements for Special General Meeting

Applications for admission to the Craft were submitted from Mr John Chalmers and Mr Douglas Beedie. It was anticipated that further Applications would be received and it was agreed that no more than six persons be admitted at the October Making. It was remitted to the Deacon the Boxmaster and he Clerk to approve the applications to be forthcoming.

The Menu for the Supper was considered and approved and it was agreed that the cost of the Tickets be £3.00.

The Toast to the New Members would be by the Boxmaster and the Vote of thanks by Mr J B Huston.

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 23rd October 1974, 6th February 1975 and 22nd August 1975.


Accounts

The Clerk submitted the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1975 n Abstract of which had already been circulated. Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon

On the motion of Dr R T Ritchie Mr Harold Adams was elided Deacon for the ensuing year.

The new Deacon expressed his thanks to the Members of the Craft for appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his earnest endeavour to serve the craft to the best of his ability. He also paid tribute to the services rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon R T Ritchie and had pleasure in making the presentation to him of the Ex-Deacons Badge.

Ex-Deacon Dr R T Ritchie stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon for the past two years and thanked the Members of Committee for their co-operation and assistance.

On the motion of Deacon Harold Adams seconded by Ex-Deacon A McNab Mr John Allardyce was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting Office Mr Allardyce thanked the Members for the honour they paid him in appointing hymn to this Office.

(c) Clerk

On the motion of the Deacon Mr Iain R L Lamont was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft

(d) Committee

It was intimate that Messers J D Boyd, J R Devlin, W A S Dryden and D H Tweedie retired from Office and were not eligible for re-election,

Letters for the present Pensioners were read to the Meeting and as there had been no change in their financial circumstances since last year the Committee recommended that the four Applications should be submitted to the Nine Trades Court. The Clerk was instructed to confirm that Mrs Elizabeth Mather was still in Hitchin Hospital. The Committee authorised the Deacon and Boxmaster to sign the List of Poor
