In this assignment, I have chosen to talk about the topic “Do computers/video games have a place in the learning environment”? Computers and video games play a major part in today’s current environment as we rely on technology to keep us going. An example to what I’m saying would be: mobile phones, laptops, gaming consoles, tablets, cameras, medical equipment, sporting equipment etc. As time will go on, I believe that we will search for more ways to connect humans to technology within a friendly environment, I also strongly believe that we can benefit on an enormous level for I traducing more learning activities within a computer/video gaming unit. Throughout this assignment, I will give my views on what I think about the chosen topic, I will also express facts, advantages and disadvantages towards different age groups and gender. The main sources of learning come from physical, computing/video gaming and music, these reach out to people the most I believe.
What are Computer/Video Games?
Computers/video games are modern day technologies that allow the world to connect with each other. This is a way of bringing happiness towards an individual or a group of people. Computers are factual as the most intelligent source of technology as to this day. They are able to produce millions of sources within a click of a button. For example, if I was to go on a search engine known as ‘Google’ and type in ‘Football’, within seconds, the search engine will produce over a million related sources within a few seconds. Computers are also mathematical geniuses as they are numerically able to produce answers to mathematical problems within an instance. A video game is different in the fact that they bring enjoyment and entertainment towards the user of the system. Video games allow someone to connect with a game in a fictional world, allowing them to learn and express fun along the way. By choosing a video game of their choice, the individual will then become interactive with their chosen game. As you can see, either by searching within an instant or interacting, a lot can be interpreted by someone and as they are taking the information in, they can be learning as well as enjoying their experience at the same time. This experience will have the greatest impact on individuals off all ages and give them an achievable outcome.
A quote from Bill Gates
Bill Gates, A computer engineer and founder of Microsoft had this very inspirational quote that I believe will strike attention to the computing learning environment. As Bill Gates has been a developer since the early days of computer software, this particular quote will bring inspiration this this assignment and the sector itself.
“I think it's fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we've ever created. They're tools of communication, they're tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user”
He clearly expressed his opinion on what he believes, helped him. Many of us will believe that as it is a matter of fact, they can be shaped by their user. We can rely of them as a positive outcome. Treating them with the right care and attention, we can benefit very much from them as a user. Bill Gates also never made it through college but he struck and idea that changed how we live and his idea also helped the world connect via the computing lifestyle. (Tong, and Guevin, 2015)
Sources from the internet
Gaming debate
There are sources that contain information about debates from this topic online. There are certain individuals that are complaining about creating a more educational experience for games across the world. Their argument is that they believe games should remain experimental and challenging for its users. They also believe that it is against the purpose of the gaming experience, taking it away from its natural cause. An example from this argument about educational gaming lead them to explaining about creating an educational experience. The structure will have to be 100% about the purpose rather than solving problems and creating a challenging experience for its users. They are worried that introducing this into the gaming world will draw attention away from games themselves. (Can video games help children learn? 2015)
I would strongly argue against this debate as I believe an educational experience can be separated from a gaming experience its self. Technology is about evolution between humans and technology and how we can benefit from it, therefore an educational experience will eventually have to be introduced one way or another, especially for young developing children with learning difficulties.
An effective learning environment within computing
As this source of learning will be between the learner and their personal computer, they have the ability to adapt their learning environment to their specific needs. What I mean by this is they can work at their own rate, choose how and what they want to learn, possibly have more sources than physical learning itself. They will not be forced information that might not be needed for them. They can also learn an enormous variety of subjects and as a computer is technological, they can also play around and manipulate the system is self, for example designing and enjoying their computer experience.
I would use this argument in order to express my opinion in a political debate. As an experienced gamer and an experienced IT individual, I’ve learned very much on this chosen subject and I will continue to do so as it contains millions of informative sources. (Alexander and Irons, 2004)
Brain-training video games may help reverse cognitive decline in old age
This source struck my attention right away as I didn’t believe this was true but according to academic study, it is. There was an assessment which took place including 60 year old aged people. Their assessment was for them to play a custom-designed video game for 12 hours per day over a month’s period. According to studies, after the assessment finished, the then had the ability to multitask more than a 20 year old individual. They also then carried this out for a further 6 months and continued to improve their skills. A quote then followed saying “Through challenging your brain, you can drive plasticity and improve its function” said by Adam Gazzaley of the University of California, who was also responsible for this assessment.
As you can see, spending time with a video game or computer can help develop on your personal skills, achieving substantial goals just by obtaining time with these systems. I personally believe this as I also spend much time on video games which enhanced my multitasking skills. (Adam Gazzaley, Brain Training, 2012)
Kids benefitting from video games
As many parents believe video games inflict violence and inappropriate activities on kids, they believe it is not of their age to be using them. Video games offer a range of genres, different challenges and they can be beneficial in many aspects. Kids can learn and develop life skills as they grow older playing such games. Many games are structured and have goals that need to be achieved, by following these steps, kids can develop on such skill as, organization, communication, leadership, problem solving, team-work etc. By developing on these basic skills, they may have the ability to prepare them for on-coming life aspects such as school and the working environment. This also gives the ability for parents and their children to learn together which builds a stronger relationship between them. (8 reasons video gaming can develop your mind, parents.com)
