PROJECT CONTENT

General target of the water supply rehabilitation project is to increase Elbistan Municipality's technical and financial service level in a sustainable level. Particular target of the project is to ensure supply of water to consumers with appropriate pressure and sufficient quantity, with the physical investment under the project, with most appropriate investment cost.

The project mainly covers rehabilitation of existing groundwater extraction plants, and construction of new pumping stations, rising lines, reservoirs and additional network mains.

Total water demand of Elbistan Center is 555 lt/sec. In a network consisting of four floors, this demand was distributed in proportion to their zones. Existing facilities to be used in the project and new facilities and lines to be constructed are shown in Figure 2 .4.

      1. Separation of the Network to Floors and Zones

The water supply service zone has been re-defined in accordance with the new development plan under this project. In the design approach developed in this frame, the network has been separated into floors and zones to utilize existing supply style of the network and the existing reservoirs. Multi-level construction of the network is a requirement of safer operation the system. Thus, the designed network has been planned ad 4 floors. Table 2 .1 shows network floors and characteristics. Plants and lines to be used in water supply rehabilitation project and to be new constructed are shown in Figure 2 .4. Abbreviations in the figure are as follows:

      1. Groundwater extraction Construction and Rehabilitation

Plants in existing Pınarbaşı and Kaynarca sources will be rehabilitated and turned into groundwater extraction structures with new plant additions. Existing Pınarbaşı Pumping Station is shown in Figure 2 .5 and the Kaynarca Pumping Station is shown in Figure 2 .6.

Figure 2.5 Pınarbaşı Pumping Station

Figure 2.6 Kaynarca Pumping Station

        1. Pınarbaşı Groundwater Extraction

The existing caisson well in Pınarbaşı source will be retained.

The Pınarbaşı Groundwater Extraction collection room will be planned as a caisson. Water collected by new constructed drainages from the bottom of the source lake will be transferred to the caisson collection room to be constructed. With the existing drainage, water collected in the existing caisson and welling in the existing pool collection room will flow to the caisson collection room to be newly constructed.

With the aid of 6-group pumping station to be constructed near the collection room, water as much as the demand of each level will be pumped to the relevant network reservoir. From the Pınarbaşı Groundwater Extraction, DM1 reservoir will be supplied with a design flow of 200 lt/sec, DM2 reservoir with 82 lt/sec through DM1 and DM3 reservoir with 54 lt/sec.

        1. Kaynarca Groundwater Extraction

Existing pumping station along Ceyhan, from which water is pumped directly to the network, and the collection room will be destroyed and a 6-group pumping station will be constructed here. From the pumping station here, water will be given only to the 1. level 3. region reservoir DY1 (Q35 = 219 lt/sec, Qt = 155 lt/sec). A caisson collection room will be constructed beside the pumping station.
      1. Pumping Stations and Lines

        1. Rising main between Pınarbaşı – DM1

Existing 500 steel rising main will be retained. Rising flow is 145 lt/sec and pipe length is 3677 m. Additionally, a new rising main will be constructed such as to pump whole water demand of 1. Level 1. Zone and 1. Level 2. Zone to the DM1 Reservoir.
        1. Rising main between Pınarbaşı – DM3

Its estimated length is 950 m and rising flow is 41 lt/sec. TM3 pumping station will be constructed in front of the DM3 reservoir. 1 duty and 1 stand-by 2-group pumps will be used in the pumping stations.
        1. Rising main between TM3 – DY3 reservoir

Its length is about 750 m and rising flow is 10 lt/sec. Rising main pipe will be 150 mm PVC. 2-group small type pumping station will be constructed. (1 duty, 1 stand-by pump)
        1. Rising main between TM4 – DY4 reservoir

Its length is about 400 m and rising flow is 3 lt/sec. Rising main pipe will be 100 PVC. 2-group small type pumping station will be constructed. (1 duty, 1 stand-by pump)
        1. Rising main between Kaynarca – DY1 reservoir

Its length is about 1200 m and rising flow is 155 lt/sec. Existing 1000 mm steel pipe will be used and at the section of main without laid pipes, 600 mm. steel pipe will be used.
        1. Rising mains not to be used

Existing rising main between Pınarbaşı caisson – DM3, existing rising main between Pınarbaşı caisson – TKİ Reservoir and the boring wells Lise (1) and Lise (2) will not be used.
      1. Reservoirs

Existing reservoirs (DM1-5) are currently in service. Technical details for existing reservoirs are presented in Table 2 .2.

DY3 reservoir with 300 m3 volume, at 1325 m. piezometric level

DY4 reservoir with 300 m3 volume, at 1375 m. piezometric level

Road will be made for DY4 reservoir.

      1. Network

In the scope of network construction, 40 km new network including pumping lines and 26 km replacement of existing pipelines.

15 km of new network will be constructed as Æ80 – Æ100 – Æ150 diameter pipes within the new residential zones. The rest of the new network, 25 km consists of main pipelines including pumping lines. Pumping lines, within the context of main pipelines, has a total length of 8 km. 6 km of these pumping lines are to be constructed with Æ560 – Æ250 HDPE pipes, 1,3 km are to be constructed Æ150 – Æ100 PVC pipes, 0,8 km are to be constructed Æ560 steel pipes. 10 km of total piping lines are to be constructed with HDPE pipes and 56 km with PVC pipes.

Replacement of existing pipelines consists of replacement of all the ductile iron pipes (22 km). In addition replacement of asbestos cement pipes smaller than Æ80 (3 km) and PVC pipes smaller than Æ80 (1 km) will also be replaced.

Network level and zone water demand is shown in Table 2 .1. In the network calculation, minimum operation pressure will be considered to be 20 m. - Practices of Bank of Provinces will be followed in valving and placing fire hydrants. Valving will be carried out with the regional isolation principle. A fire hydrant will be placed in every 150 m. Doubles pipes have been laid at roads wider than 20 m. Attention was paid to network pipes at roads maintained by the Highways. In the network, Ceyhan Creek crossings will be made by using existing bridges. This creek will be crossed by hanging the pipes to bridges, in accordance with the existing crossings.

Network rehabilitation will be carried out in Pınarbaşı, Orhangazi, Ceyhan, Kızılcıoba Quarters, and new network construction will be carried out in Yeşilyurt, Pınarbaşı, Orhangazi and Cumhuriyet Quarters.
