Caspar von Schwenckfeld (ca 1490 - 1561), carried out his own brand of the Reformation, eventually coming to "Irreconcilable" differences with Luther (cf. on-line Catholic Encyclopedia). Certain teachings were declared "erroneous" in the Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord. This scholarly and well-written book is very, very scarce. Owner's seal on front paste down. Fine copy. Well-reviewed, this scholarly study by the, at time of publication, "Chairman of the School of History and Head of Medieval Studies at the Univ. of Tel-Aviv", "examines attitudes towards children, images of childhood, and the concept of the stages of childhood in medieval culture, from the nobility to the peasantry." (publisher's comments). The former owner has a small private library label on the inside of the front cover, and an ink name stamp on a blank area of the title page. It includes, for example, the article, "The Significance of the Louisiana Purchase" by Frederick Jackson Turner. Among the book ads was a small one on the just published trail herd classic, The Log of a Cowboy. Also material about Teddy Roosevelt & his written works. Three volumes. 451, 456, 443pp. Gilt-stamped spines with raised bands. Marbled endpapers. A good reading set inasmuch as the joints are cracked or beginning to crack. Vol I front cover loosening from the joint. Faded spines dressed so they don't look so faded on the shelf. All edges gilt, but a 3/4" x 1 1/2" area on the bottom edge of vol. I has the gilt removed. An ink stain had bled into the bottoms of the page margins of that volume & was carefully removed, but also removing the gilt at that location. Some shadows or outlines on the page margins where the ink was removed. For someone who will be using these volume rather hard, some joint work/reinforcement would be important for the long haul. But, with all faults mentioned, this set will economically serve someone's use well. Vol. I has etching of Shelley. Vol. II has fold out facsimile of Shelley's writing.
