TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES
Telex is a system of sending or receiving messages by teleprinter. Messages are printed when being sent or received simultaneously. They are printed out even if the person who has to get the message does not operate the teleprinter provided, of course, the machine is switched on. The operator can pick up any messages from the telex machine at any time. Subscribers to this service rent equipment which works through the telecommunication lines. It is a 24 hour international service and charges are based on time and distance. A modern equipment has a visual display unit on which the message can be prepared before sending.
Telex is used when sending urgent information, written confirmation of orders and above all when it comes to cope with international time differences. A telex message is usually accepted as legal evidence.

The fax machine is a machine which transmits within seconds copies of letters, documents, diagrams, graphs, charts, drawings, virtually anything you can put on paper. It includes a full featured built in phone. The latest machines are provided with automatic dialling, storing and forwarding facilities suitable to meet a variety of business needs.Unlike a telex machine which transmits and receives typewritten text, a fax machine transmits exact copies - i.e. telecopies - of signed documents. The cost of sending a fax depends on the time required to transmit it.
Teletex / Electronic Mail
It is an international electronic mail service for sending messages between terminals, which may be electronic typewriters provided with a teletex adapter or computers. Messages are transmitted from the office computer to a similar equipment through the telephone network by means of a modem or through the British Telecom Teletex service. Teletex is faster than telex as messages are sent memory to memory so they can be prepared, stored, read, printed and sent.
Videotex comprises two distinct services: Teletext and Prestel.
teletext is a one-way computer based system which allows text to be received and displayed on a screen. Viewers cannot communicate with the system. Using a keypad they only choose and call a page of data. The BBC and ITV provide information services through CEEFAX ans ORACLE.
prestel. Unlike teletext services, where information is only received, Prestel is a two-way system. To access the system users have either a Prestel set or a computer and connection is made through a number and a password. Subscribers to this service are businesses, public libraries, Universities and private individuals who have access to thausands of pages of special information. Users receive information and send messages to other users or to the information providers.
