Profession Head of a Structural Unit of Logistics

Qualification level 5


Job description Head of a Structural Unit of Logistics is responsible for supply of raw materials and completing parts, sales of goods produced or purchased in an industrial enterprise or trading organisation, ensures

high quality of customer services in the right place and time, states stock management policy of the enterprise, supervises general surveillance of the quality of the performance of raw material suppliers and is responsible for the cooperation with suppliers and customers. Inside the enterprise the head of logistics has close contacts with the planning, production and marketing departments. In strategic planning he/she is in charge of the development of distribution channels, including location of warehouses and choice of modes of transportation, thus minimizing stocks.

1. To state and define the management strategy of a structural unit of logistics taking into account the specific performance of the enterprise or organization and to develop its policy in changing business environment.

1.1. To analyse the external business environment in local and international context, to study the globalization and specialization tendencies in production and trading as well as to analyse the competitiveness.

1.2. To define the economic policy of an enterprise or organization ensuring high quality service, proper stock management and planning the flows of commodities.



2. To choose the location and capacity of storage facilities and warehouses, modes of transport and information systems taking into consideration the prospects of the enterprise development.

2.1. To plan the capacity, number and location of warehouses in regional markets.

2.2. To set the right proportion between the external and in-ternal storage facilities (warehouses) and transportation services.

2.3. To set the priorities in transport and information system modes.


3. To define the basic tasks of the structural unit of logistics providing the supply of raw materials and sales in an enterprise or organization.


3.1. To choose the best model for continuous replenishment of inventories for different groups of raw materials.

3.2. To define the service level of the supply of goods sold to the customers.

3.3. To estimate the compliance between the service level of supplies to customers and the required inventory buffer level.


4. To plan the functioning of the structural unit of logistics within the organizational structure of an enterprise or organization management cooperating with the production, marketing and planning departments.

4.1. In cooperation with the marketing and planning departments define the sequence of production of the modification of goods.

4.2. In cooperation with the production department set and plan the raw material supply schedule as well as supply schedules for all the other materials required.

4.3. In cooperation with the marketing department choose the proper kinds of tare and ways of packing the goods.


5. To develop continuing business relations with raw materials (parts) suppliers offering tender procedures and controlling their performance.

5.1. To invite the suppliers of raw materials and other goods to tenders by groups of raw materials or goods.

5.2. To organize general quality control of material supply.



6. To develop continuing business relations with the transportation organizations and freight forwarding agencies and control their performance.

6.1. To invite to the tenders for transportation of goods.

6.2. To organize the quality and cost control of transportation of goods.

6.3. To have regular negotiations with the carriers and forwarding agents about the optimization of transportation of goods.


7. To analyse, evaluate and enhance the performance of the structural unit of logistics of an enterprise or organisation taking into consideration the changes and the forecasts of the external and internal factors.

7.1. To analyse the efficiency of the performance of the logistics channel of an enterprise or organisation evaluating the costs of transportation, storage facilities and placement of orders of raw materials and goods as well as the inventory level and to analyse the tendencies of the enterprise and organization for enhancement the profitability of contributions.

7.2. To evaluate the performance of the employees of the structural unit of logistics.

  • To define the tasks of the structural unit of logistics in the management of enterprise or organization and to be able to evaluate the main responsibilities of production, planning and market research departments to effect good cooperation with the structural unit of logistics.

  • To understand the concepts “Just-in-time production” and “Just-in-time supplies” (JIT).

  • To understand the significance of transportation and storage of goods as well as information processes, to be aware of their specific features in planning and management.

  • To know terminology in international logistics (in English)

  • To be able to apply the optimization models of inventory supply.

  • To know the rules and regulations when signing contracts on the supply of goods in the domestic and international markets.

  • To know the regulations of transportation of goods using different modes of transport and to be able to analyse transportation issues.

  • To lead negotiations on solving economic problems

  • To motivate suggestions and proposals

  • To be a team leader

  • To be fluent in the official state language and to know one or more foreign languages.

  • To analyze one’s own experience , as well as share your experience and make conclusions.
