| TYPES OF TABLETS
1. Ingestable tablets 2. Oral tablets 3. Others INGESTABLE TABLETS These include tablets that are supposed to be swallowed e.g. Paracetamol,chloroquine etc.There are some that are supposed to be dispersed in water before use e.g. vitamin C, soluble aspirin, etc. ORAL TABLETS These are tablets that are taken into the mouth but are not to be swallowed.They are placed in the mouth and allowed to dissolve inside the buccal cavity e.g. buccal tablets,sublingual tablets.These type of tablets do not require a disintegrant.Usually, a disintegrant is needed to break up the tablets but in this case is not needed since the drug is soluble. OTHERS: a. LOSENGES: These are tablets that are meant to be sucked.They are sucked genly in the mucousal membrane.They usually contain antiseptic,astringent.E.g. Equadine tablet b. CHEWABLE TABLETS: These are tablets that are supposed to be chewed e.g. Magnessium trisilicate (antacids). These type of tablets do not require disintegrant since the teeth can be used in masticating the tablets c. DENTAL HOLE TABLETS: They are meant to be placed in the socket where teeth is been removed. These tablets are used in preventing bacterial infection. They usually contain anti-biotic (to prevent infection) and bicarbonate (to disintegrate the drug). d. IMPLANTS: These are very small tablets which are usually sterile and contain only the drug without any other additive. They are implanted under the skin usually on the abdomen, thigh, etc. The most common implants are contraceptives for ladies and men. The tablets usually stay for about 3 months, releasing the drug gradually. e. VAGINAL TABLETS(PESSARIES): They are usually oval or round in shape inserted into the vaginal cavity.They usually contain anti-biotic and agents. They may contain anti-inflamatory agents. E.g. Metronidazole. These tablets also do not contain disintegrants but usually contain bicarbonates such as sodium bicarbonate and lactose.
