DISADVANTAGES

  1. It is not suitable for hygroscopic drugs and exipients. Usually, the shell is stored in tightly-closed containers at a relative humidity of. If it is stored at very low humidity, the capsule shell becomes brittle making the shell to crack.

  2. Capsule shell is usually made in a solution, the sugar and water is added and colours may be added.

  3. If the capsule is to contain two colours; one for the cap and one for the body, two solutions containing different colourants are prepared and different pins for each is used (i.e. one for cap and one for body).

  4. The thickness of the capsule shell depends on the viscosity of the gelatin.

  5. The use of the shell depends on the amount of drug that is to be contained in the capsule e.g.
