CAPSULES
Capsules are solid dosage forms. Each capsule is made up of two parts:
Capsule shell and
Drug.
The shell is usually made up of gelatin material. In capsule, the amount of the drug may be small, therefore a diluent is needed to make up the bulk of the drug.
TYPES OF CAPSULES
There are 2 types of capsules:
Hard gelatin capsule
Soft gelatin capsule
The capsule shell is made up of gelatin, sugars and water. The gelatin is usually obtained from animal skins and bones by hydrolysis.
ADVANTAGES OF CAPSULES
1. Since the drug is enclosed in a shell, it is easy to mask unpleasant tastes and odour.
2. Usually, the drug is enclosed in a shell, therefore once it gets into a moist environment, the gelatin dissolves, hence there is fast release and onset of action.
3. The drug is in a shell, therefore protects the drug from the environmental conditions such as light, humidity etc.
4. Most capsules are elegant in appearance, therefore there is patient compliance.
5. Enteric coating can be applied to hard capsules. This coating protects the drug from gastric degradation.
6. The enteric coating in hard capsules also protects some drugs from the irritation of the GIT.
7. The capsule can also be coated to target where it is supposed to release a certain drug.
