COATING OF TABLETS
There are 2 types of coating
Sugar coating
Film coating
SUGAR COATING
Sugar coating is used to mask unpleasant taste and/or odour.
To protect the ingredient from invitro degradation as a result of exposure to moisture, O2 and light i.e. to protect the ing from env factors
To separate incompatible ingredients by forming one of the ingredients in the tablet core while including the others in the tablet coat.
To improve the appearance of the tablet i.e. making the tablet more elegant for the patient
FILM COATING
Film coating is divided into two:
Enteric coating
Non-enteric coating
In film coating, polymer solutions are spread on the tablets to form a thin film or coat round the tablets.
ADVANTAGES OF FILM COATING
Enteric coating can be used to control the site of release of drug
Enteric coating can be used to protect the drug from the acid PH of the stomach e.g. erythromycin
Enteric coating can protect the stomach from irritant of drugs e.g. aspirin causes irritation of the GIT and can be prevented by enteric coating.
Unlike sugar coating,in film coating,a polymer or plasticizer is added in the coating .The plasticizer makes the coating flexible or elastic preventing it from splitting.Others added to the coating material include:propylene glycol.
Unlike sugar coating, film coating is simpler, quicker, time saving. Not much skill is required.
Film coating enhances the invitro stability of the drug against hydrolysis, oxidation and photolysis.
FIlm coating solution contain materials which could be for enteric or non-enteric coating.U need a polymer, plasticizer
QUALITY CONTROL/QUALITY STANDARDS OF TABLETS
They are essentialy;
To ensure that the patient receive the required amount of the active ingredient in the tablet
To exclude any batch-to-batch variation or within batch variation in order to ensure the exact drug content of the tablet.
