The Utazas Tourism Exhibition, promotion 18-22 March 2004
Participating at the biggest annual Travel and Tourism Exhibition in Budapest. Members from South Africa’s provincial tourism authorities, agencies will participate alongside the Embassy and use the event to showcase SOUTH AFRICA’s diversity and variety. There is a possibility of a workshop session with the SOUTH AFRICAN travel specialists and their counterparts.
Public Lecture: South African Literature: 24-25 March 2004
Possibility to host Nobel Literature laureate Nadine Gordimer in Budapest to give a lecture on her works, which are well known
Fashion Show: 28 March 2004
Collaborating with Rynart International and the International Women’s Club Foundation to organise a fashion extravaganza. Leading fashion designers from Hungary, Italy, London etc will be participating. South Africa’s up and coming designers, Stone Cherry, will participate to showcase the South Africa’s talent. M-Net is also negotiating with the organisers to attend the fashion show.
Exchange of Chefs - promotion of SOUTH AFRICA skill and the variety in the food industry: 24 April – 2 May 2004
Possibilities of an exchange of chefs between a hotel chain in SOUTH AFRICA and the same chain in Hungary i.e. The Inter Continental Hotel. South African cuisine will be served as part of the celebration. It would include a variety of SOUTH AFRICAN wines being served; a business dinner hosted by the hotel with the top business leaders in Hungary and a photographic exhibition.
Eleventh Budapest Book Exhibition: 22-25 April 2004
Budapest will host its annual book exhibition in April. The Embassy is planning to participate by exhibiting South African books/literature/poetry.
Public Lecture on Human Rights: 22 April (to be confirmed)
The Embassy, in collaboration with ELTE University of Budapest, will host a Public Lecture on human rights issues, and SOUTH AFRICA’s experience in promoting Human Rights.

Hosting the Wits University School of Arts, who will perform Athol Fugard’s play, ‘The Island’. The play is evocative and it inspires people about South Africa’s history and the extraordinary changes happening.

Project involving secondary schools in Hungary to showcase South Africa’s rise to democracy, on the occasion of Youth Day.
Choir competition: July/August 2004
An invitation for a South African choir to participate in the 28th Debrecen Choir competition has been sent. South African choirs have participated (and won) in the past.

The Embassy has been in contact with the Star newspaper regarding the use of photographs that portray positive images about SOUTH AFRICA. These photographs are part of the material from award winning photographer, Karen Sandison.
