Family Institute

Company Description

The FI is an independent not-for-profit (501c3) affiliated with Northwestern University. Founded in 1968, the FI is one of the oldest and largest institutions in the country devoted to strengthening and healing families through clinical service, professional education and clinical research. Annually FI therapists conduct over 50,000 therapy sessions through the Staff Practice and Family and Child Clinic. The Institute has almost 100 full time graduate students in the two Masters Programs it runs through and for Northwestern University (in Marriage and Family Therapy and in Counseling Psychology). The FI conducts research: 1) to track and feedback change data in family, couple and individual therapy; and 2) to improve the treatment of couples/families in which one person is depressed and/or anxious.

The Psychotherapy Change Project (PCP) at the Family Institute at Northwestern University (FI) develops research methods to study client change during psychotherapy and what therapist behaviors facilitate that change. Additionally, it develops internet systems for feeding back client change and therapist behavior information to therapists and other stake holders during therapy to improve the outcome of psychotherapy.

See Website: http://www.family-institute.org/

Project Description

The PCP staff have developed a scientifically valid client questionnaire for studying client change during therapy called the Systemic Therapy Inventory of Change (STIC®) and an internet based (website) feedback system for the STIC® called sticfeedback.com. Both are trademarked and copyrighted. Currently the STIC® and the feedback system are being used by therapists at the FI.

PCP staff have also developed a therapist questionnaire to study therapist behavior during therapy called The Integrative Therapy Session Report (ITSR). This questionnaire is currently being scientifically validated. We plan to develop a website (linked to the sticfeedback.com) and internet based feedback system for the ITSR in 2008 and to deploy it within the the FI in 2009.
FI believes the current (STIC® and sticfeedback.com) and future products of the PCP (ITSR and itsrfeedback.com) hold great scientific and commercial promise within the mental health field and in particular within the family therapy field. Potential customers fall into three primary market groups: 1) insurance and governmental organizations providing and/or funding psychotherapy; 2) clinics, hospitals, medical centers and mental health and social service agencies that provide psychotherapy services; 3) clinics affiliated with and/or part of graduate programs in clinical psychology and family therapy. The FI has a collaborative STIC® partnership with the Marriage and Family Doctoral Program at Purdue University and is exploring partnerships with other academic and medical institutions in North America and Europe. The STIC® has been translated into Spanish and is being translated into French.

Project Deliverables

  • Business Plan, including answers to the following questions:

    1. Are there markets with sufficient interest to warrant extensive further development of the STIC ®and ITSR internet based feedback systems?

    2. What financial models would work best for the FI-PCP and the various markets mentioned above?

    3. What is the best way to maximize the business and intellectual/scientific potential of the PCP and its products?

    4. What business infrastructure (personnel, organization, etc.) would the FI need to market the STIC®, the ITSR and the feedback systems?
