OTHER INFORMATION ON ST ERTH FAMILY 8 continued Notes on Charlotte Hall and Ernest Tregenza written in 1977 by Graeme Wood (from email 2011) On 12 May 1888 Ellen Martha gave birth to a daughter, who was named Charlotte Hall. Charlotte was the tenth and youngest child of Ellen Martha and Anthony Hall's total family. Charlotte Hall lived at Longbeach till the age of 15 and then for the next 8 years went to work as a housemaid at Oamaru, Wellington and finally at Timaru. Ernest Cecil Tregenza had a section next door to where Charlotte used to work in Timaru, on which he used to grow vegetables for sale. It was while delivering vegetables to the house next door that Ernest first chanced to meet Charlotte. Charlotte (age 23) married Ernest (age 25) at the Mathesons House, 43 Woodhore Street, Woodhore, Dunedin and they settled at 18 Hobbs Street Timaru. In 1920 Charlotte and Ernest moved to 22 Hobbs Street, where he moved his business and built stables. The homestead, built of Oamaru stone still stands today. Ernest had already set up a shingle carting business in 1904 at the age of 19, with one Clydesdale draught horse and a dray. In those days he had to load the dray by hand which was very hard work. The business grew, till in later years when he decided to retire, he sold the business to his oldest son, George Ernest Tregenza. The site where Ernest obtained the shingle from was along the seashore near the lagoon and the Smithfield Freezing Works in Timaru. Later George set up business on the right hand side of the wharf in Caroline Bay, where he used a drag line to obtain the shingle from the sea. Ernest Cecil Tregenza used to mow hay with a two horse team mower. The Waimataitai School grounds in those days were mowed regularly by Ernest. The hay was then tied into stooks and after about a week depending on the weather, the hay was then loaded onto a flat deck truck with a two pronged pitch fork. The hay was then carted to Ernest Tregenza's property at 22 Hobbs Street Timaru, where the hay was man-handled once again and stacked into a hay stack. Ernest kept 31 Clydesdale draught horses until the early 1950s until he gradually mechanised his business to modern Bedford trucks. It took a team of seven draught horses to pull a dray, one shafter, one horse on either side of the main shafts, 3 pulling horses and one leader. The whole horse team was certainly needed on steep muddy hillside sections where shingle was often delivered. Ernest had a great love of animals and he kept the retired draught horses until the day he died. Ernest had seen the passing of an era when animals were set aside for petrol driven machines. The cream was separated and put in a small hand driven churn. Over two dozen fowls were also kept. Charlotte had a busy life looking after the six children, milking the house cow twice daily, making the butter and feeding the fowls. As if this was not enough, along with her other domestic chores, she used to bake for the workmen and prepare the morning and afternoon teas which they had in the kitchen sitting around a long wooden table. Clothes hung from the ceiling of the kitchen on a large clothes rack which was pulled up on pulleys. There was a constant heat from the coal range which always had a large black stock pot simmering away on it. Clothes were always boiled in a copper and then rinsed in cold water and blued with the old type of blue bags. Once the business was sold and the children were well off their hands, Charlotte took up outdoor bowls, which she played at the Ashby Bowling Club. It was not long before she represented Timaru in the New Zealand Championships. At the age of 70 Charlotte started playing an accordion by ear and always had a tune for anyone visiting. Extracts from ‘Tregenza in Australia 2007’ by John G. Pedler of 4 Monaro Crescent Newton South Australia 5074 show the shift from New Zealand to Australia: “The three boys JACK (=JOHN), JIM (=JAMES-MONTAGUE) and CHARLES(-HENRY) moved from New Zealand to Western Australia around 1907. Jack and Jim the married twins May and Mary Brown in Albany. May died after her marriage to Jack and also her mother (appendicitis complications).” “Later the families moved to Beverly area to farm wheat. They also farmed and lived around Albany, Dangin, Corrigin and Quairading. The families of EDWARD and JEAN live in the Mandurah region of Western Australia. The family has been farming in this general area for over 100 years.” Note: Dangin, Quairading, Corrigin, Caroling, Beverley and Badjaling are close together in a part of the wheat belt due east of Perth Western Australia but Albany is on the south coast of Western Australia and some way from the Beverley area while Mandurah is on the west coast south of Perth and now a dormitory town of it.
