  • The War and its Results

    • The war lasted 4 months – with fighting in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

    • Of the 5,000 Americans who died, less than 400 were killed in combat – the rest died from infection and disease.

    1. The Treaty of Paris, 1899

    2. The Spanish-American War lasted fewer than four months. Spain was beaten so completely that it agreed to sign the Treaty of Paris. The important terms of the treaty are summarized below.















    3. Prior to the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the United States acquired Midway and Wake Islands. Four days after the treaty was signed, the United States annexed Hawaii.
