VE4ISS ARISS Contact Setup Procedures 2015-10-23

1 Week before Scheduled Contact


Determine the members on the TB Ops Team, include adult supervisors and trainees for the contact, invite guests, notify media, and Shaftesbury Audio/Video Team. File any PTSD permits needed, run a full station check (procedures below) including satellite tracking, locate all manuals, scripts, and run drills.

2 Days before Scheduled Contact


Perform second station check with full TB Ops Team and run drills.

2 1/2 Hours before Scheduled Contact


Follow the Initialization procedure as seen below. Perform second station check with full TB Ops Team and run drills. Track the ISS on an early pass.

INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE

Entering the Room

  1. Disarm alarm.

  2. Check that all antenna switches are set to A.

  3. Turn on security camera monitor and TV1.

Radio Equipment Power Up

  1. Turn on Astron power supply (check for 13V on second dial).

  2. Turn on Kenwood radios (check power by pressing the PWR button, verify it is at 50W (5W for practice runs)).

  3. Turn on mixer power (main power closest to power cord (phantom power off)).

  4. Turn on rotor power supplies then rotor controllers (bottom then top).

  5. Turn on 2m P sequence controller preamp.

  6. Boot up all computers.

  7. Log in to PCs with the following credentials:

MacDoppler Setup


Readying computer for rotor control

  1. Power on Macs and switch top monitor input to input 2 (button 2 located at bottom of left hand side of ViewSonic monitor).




  1. Open MacDoppler on left hand sidebar.

  2. Deselect Speech Advisories from the options menu.

  3. Mute Mac using keyboard keys or the speaker icon on menu bar at top.

  4. Update Keps. Go to File, Download Celestrak Keps.

  5. Ensure ‘Rotators Enabled’ in bottom right is checked.

  6. Click on map and scroll up with mouse so that North America is in view.

  7. Test rotor control by going to MacDoppler, Preferences, Rotator (tab), change Azimuth to 175 and Elevation to 5 and 175click Park Now.

  8. Confirm tracking on security camera, then revert Azimuth to 180 and Elevation to 0 and click Park Now. Confirm movement on security camera.


PC Procedures

Nova for Windows Setup


Syncing computer clock

  1. Open Nova for Windows.

  2. If Nova For Windows dialogue box appears, refer to complete setup for Nova For Windows.

  3. Verify that Winnipeg and ISS Zarya appear on the map. If they don’t, refer to complete setup for Nova For Windows.

  4. Select Setup  Time.

  5. Click ‘Internet Time Set’ button. The ‘Stratum-1-time server’ should be set to ‘ntp2.nl.net’. Click the ‘Synch’ button a few times and be sure to observe the error correction. Close all dialog boxes. Close Nova for Windows.


SatPC32 Setup


Updating Keps for Doppler shift

  1. Open SatPC32 and select Satellites from menu. Click on ‘Update Keps’ button in ‘Satellites’ window. Select the URL that begins with ‘www.celestrak.com’ and ends with ‘amateur.txt’. Click on the ‘Download’ button. Click ‘OK’ on the new dialog box.

  2. Click the ‘Quit’ button on ‘Download Keps’ window and ‘OK’ in ‘Satellites’ window.

  3. Select the ISS by clicking on letter ‘D’ at the bottom right corner of the SatPC32 main screen with the world map.

  4. Visually compare the position of the ISS on SatPC32 with the position of ISS on MacDoppler. If ISS positions are not the same, close SatPC32 and repeat previous three steps in SatPC32 Setup.

  5. Close the SatPC32 application.


SatPC32ISS Setup


PC control of radio

  1. Open SatPC32ISS.

  2. Verify in the top left corner of SatPC32ISS that the R and C settings are set to R- and C+ (if MacDoppler program is used for rotor control).

  3. Verify that uplink and downlink frequencies are the same and in sync on the Kenwood radios and the SatPC32ISS application. If the frequencies are not in sync, you may be operating through the SatPC32 application. To sync within SatPC32ISS, click on the C setting in the top left corner. This should change the setting from C+ to C-. Now click on the C setting once more, this should finally toggle it from C- to C+. Verify once more the uplink and downlink frequencies are in sync.

  4. Click CAT menu to open CAT Tuning Window. Ensure that the first line of frequencies is highlighted (145800/145900 FM/FM).

  5. Verify that both primary and secondary systems are using the same uplink and downlink frequencies.

  6. Visually compare the position of the ISS on SatPC32 with the position of ISS on MacDoppler. If ISS positions are not the same, close SatPC32 and repeat previous three steps in SatPC32 Setup.
  1. Minutes before Scheduled Contact


The teleconference is started and participants are called in by the telephone operator. From that point on the audience will be invited to be silent and listen to the contact between the ISS and the VE4ISS station.
