That season he played for the Portsmouth Black Revels, the Baltimore Stars, and the Brooklyn Royal Giants, where he played in the outfield. Smokey Joe Williams connected him with the Homestead Grays in 1934, a team for which he’d man first base for the next 16 years. FTP, identify this baseball legend, who along with Josh Gibson formed the most fearsome power duo in Negro League history.

2. Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, his family moved to New York when he was 5, and he attended Stuyvesant High School, excelling in physics and math and playing church organ on the side. He played piano in Kenny Clarke’s house band in 1941 and 1942, and spent the next five years playing for Lucky Millinder, Coleman Hawkins, and finally Dizzy Gillespie before striking out on his own in 1947 and establishing himself as a giant on the jazz scene in 1947.
