The Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing cluster at the Oakland Schools technical campuses prepares students for careers and opportunities in the business and technology fields. Students will develop essential skills for both employment and/or entry into postsecondary education at community colleges, universities, trade/technical schools and on-the-job training programs.

Cluster Description


This nationally recognized one to two-year program offers a variety of career options that lead to business and industry certifications. Four different career opportunities are offered, including Marketing, Sales, and Entrepreneurship, Network Administration, PC Support & Helpdesk, Database Administration & Programming, and E-Commerce & Web Development. Advanced placement and college articulated credit are also available. In addition to the technical skills needed in the workforce, students receive extensive training in oral and written communications, problem solving and critical thinking, career preparation and development, research, leadership and teamwork.

Instructional Focus: The iTEAM cluster emphasizes the use of computers to solve computer technology and business problems. The curriculum currently consists of the following four specialties: (1) Computer Systems Networking and Telcommunications, (2) Marketing, Sales and Entrepreneurship, (3) Computer Programming/Programmer and (4) Digital Multimedia Information Resource Design.



11.0901 Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications
Students enrolled in this program will be given the opportunity to develop the skills and attitudes necessary for successful entrance into the Computer Technician and Network Technician field within the confines of their abilities, individual application, and resourcefulness. Students will prepare for the IC3 (Internet Computing Core), CompTia A+, and CompTia Network + certification. Upon achieving the goals of the program the students will become competent in the fundamentals skills of Computer Technology and Network Technology fields.


52.1999 Marketing, Sales, & Entrepreneurship

Students enrolled in this program will be given the opportunity to learn entrepreneurship and marketing skills that will provide them with the knowledge necessary to start and manage their own business or obtain an entry level marketing position. Students will prepare for national certifications in Customer Service and Sales and can also obtain Microsoft Office or Adobe certifications. They will also have the opportunity to earn direct credit through Macomb Community College.


11.0201 Computer Programming/Programmer

Get hands-on experience with the tools and technology that drives our world as you explore the field of Computer Programming. This program provides a broad knowledge base for applying computer programming development skills in a career focused environment. Using a combination of theory, hands-on software practice and practical project development,students will gain a basic understanding of the principles of computer programming using ALICE, C++ and Java.


11.0801 Digital Multimedia Information Resource Design

Students in this program will develop the skills necessary to create web page designs and layout through the use of digital software. Students will prepare for certification in Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Flash. This course has projects that utilize software to create animations to be integrated into web development programs. After achieving these goals the students will become competent in the fundamental skills of Web Development Design.



Prerequisites/Helpful Skills


Instructional delivery is primarily teacher facilitated. Consequently, students must be able to work independently and as a team member. Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills are very helpful. Basic math communication, reading comprehension and composition, economics, speech and writing skills are necessary for success.

Students may participate in regional, state and national competitions for SkillsUSA, BPA, DECA and Global Trade Mission.

Core Curriculum

The core includes technology literacy, training for life skills in business and technology at all levels of education, and pre-career skills in a variety of work settings and leadership training.

Expectations/Class Rules
Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing
CLASSROOM RULES, GOALS & EXPECTATIONS
I. RULES:
A. The 4 R’s – Respect, Responsibility, Reliability, Relationships

B. Responsibility: You will be responsible for your own behavior and learning.

C. Food or Drink is not allowed in the computer lab. Bottled water is permitted.

D. Sleeping will not be tolerated.

E. Group tours: You will be respectful and courteous to the touring group members.

F. Destructive behavior will not be tolerated.

G. The attendance book and grade books are untouchable except in the company an instructor.

H. Pressing the emergency button (except if directed by teacher) is grounds for suspension.

I. Playing computer games and listening to music during class time will not be tolerated.

J. Coats, hats and book bags will be kept in the coatroom.

K. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.

L. Come prepared for class each day. You MUST have your own pen or pencil.

III. EXPECTATIONS
It is expected that all students will:

A. Be punctual and attend daily

IV. CLASSROOM ROUTINES:
A. Starting the period.

1. School policy for tardies will be strictly followed. (A tardy is not being in the room when the bell rings.)

2. Students are expected to get materials ready for class at the start of the period.

3. Students are expected to be on task until the end of the class period.


B. Ending the period.

1. Students will leave all completed work in the instructor’s folder.

2. Each student is expected to clean up his/her work area at the end of the session. (Mr. Waters, Mr. Mayville, Mrs. Livingston will not be your janitors.)

3. Students are to stay in the room until teacher dismissal. All students will exit the iTEAM computer lab through the doors by the presentation area only! Do not line up at door - remain seated until bell rings.

C. Seating.

1. The instructors will assign seating.

2. You will be responsible for the maintenance and care of your assigned work area.
D. Classroom environment.

1. Areas will be designated for storage of any materials students care to leave in room.

2. All books and materials should not leave the classroom unless teachers’ permission is granted. (A sign-out sheet will be provided)

3. Passes are REQUIRED to leave the room. (Limit of two students at a time)


4. No disks, CD’s, USB or Pen Drives will be allowed in the classroom unless you have an instructor’s permission.
E. Grading policy.

1. Technical and Academic Skills - 70%

2. Work Habits - 30%
F. Conference time.

1. Any day, by appointment.

Requirements for Field/Work Experience

for

School to Career (STC) Program

Parameters for Student Placement

  • Students are high school juniors and seniors who have completed safety and 50% of the state-approved curriculum

  • Work at the job site during their scheduled class time

  • Must work a minimum of two and a half hours a day to receive classroom credit

  • Work one to four days a week; required to attend class one day a week

  • Students must follow the youth labor laws regarding hours of work

  • 24 hours maximum per week while school is in session

  • 6 days a week maximum

  • 16 & 17 years olds may not start before 6:00 AM or after 10:30PM


Criteria for Placement:

  • Have the recommendation of their instructor

  • Demonstrate a high level of competency in the program

  • Possess excellent work habits

  • Must not have exceeded five absences per semester

  • Have completed a resume

  • Maintain a “C” average or better in the program

  • Complete all classroom assignments

  • Have on file, with the STC coordinator, a training agreement and training plan

  • Turn in timesheet, weekly, with employer signature


Student Expectations:

  • It is expected that students will maintain grades, attendance, performance on the job, and turn in timesheets weekly. Failure to remain in compliance will result in suspension and/or termination of the training agreement.


Staff Requirements:

Once an educational business partnership is developed, the following occurs:



  • Complete a training agreement and plan with the student, parent and employer

  • A safety site visit is complete by a certified instructor

  • Site visits are scheduled every nine weeks (more if needed) and

completed by the instructor. STC coordinator visits the job site in the interim.

  • Performance evaluations are obtained by the STC coordinator from employer

every card marking.
