Amotivational syndrome associated with SSRI in children

Case report

5 cases of apathy and lack of motivation described in a child and 4 adolescents. Symptoms dose related and reversible with cessation/reduction. Subtlety of symptoms, lack of insight in patients, delayed onset and disabling effects were noted by authors

Reinblattet al.33 2006

SSRI induced apathy: A Pediatric Case series

Case series

2 pediatric cases, a 9-year-old child and a 16-year-old adolescent, of apathy identified from a study of fluvoxamine in pediatric anxiety disorders. Similar to previous reports, there was a lack of insight, delayed onset, dose dependency with reversibility with SSRI dose reduction and discontinuation

Padala et al.34 2012

Reversal of SSRI-associated apathy syndrome by discontinuation of therapy

Case series

In 6 cases patients reported loss of motivation of new onset and associated with commencing the use of a SSRI, with symptoms monitored by the Apathy Evaluation Scale, which all improved significantly when SSRI discontinued.

Sato et al.35 2011

Sertraline induced apathy

Case report

Apathy symptoms reported “felt like nothing mattered” “emotions flat” one month after treatment with good improvement in panic symptoms. After gradual decrease, apathy symptoms disappeared without recurrent panic attacks

Kodela et al.36 2010
