SUMMER WORK
The summer works presents the rudiments and terminology of music, including notational skills, intervals, scales and keys, chords, metric organization and rhythmic patterns. The FIRST SEMESTER FIRST NINE WEEKS is a review of these rudiments and terminology of music. (C1, C10)

FIRST SEMESTER FIRST NINE WEEKS

Horizontal Pitch and Rhythm, Ear- Training and Sight Singing

(Each lesson during the first semester nine weeks meets SC1)

Given a four-part harmonic composition each student will analyze the composition and determine the Roman numeral progression, quality and inversion of each chord. This Roman numeral progression drill and practice, to include non-harmonic tone identification in future lessons, will continue each week through to the AP Exam. . Homework assignments will accompany the in class work. (SC5)(SC4)
Given a Roman numeral progression each student will realize the composition utilizing convincing tonal harmony procedures. This Roman numeral progression drill and practice will continue each week through to the AP Exam. . Homework assignments will accompany the in class work. (SC4)

Given a grand staff with the key signature, time signature, first chord and figured bass, each student will compose a four- part composition utilizing proper harmonic compositional procedures and following common eighteenth century voice practices. * Written Analysis: This will use the development of Western Music anthology written examples. Students will use these examples for written analysis of repertoire. This will include motivic treatment, examination of rhythmic and melodic interaction between individual voices of a composition and harmonic analysis of functional tonal passages. This will continue through to the AP exam. Homework assignments will accompany the in class work. (SC5) (SC6) (SC19)
