ARTISTS IN GWAII HAANAS RESIDENCY PROGRAM – June 2016
Application Form
SUMMARY
Together, the Haida Gwaii Museum and Parks Canada offer this artist residency program for three experienced visual artists to form connections through art to Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site. This artistic immersion experience creates opportunities for one local Haida Gwaii artist, and two others from across Canada to learn, share, collaborate and try new media.
In June 2016, three visual artists will spend 5-10 days (weather dependent) immersed in the natural & breathtaking “islands of beauty,” based at a remote field-camp in Gwaii Haanas, embarking on day-trips. There will be an additional 2- week residency at the Haida Gwaii Museum, following the field trip, where artists will begin to work on creations inspired by their trip and interact with museum visitors.
While in Gwaii Haanas, artists will undertake “artistic research” by exploring, photographing, sketching, and writing about their natural surroundings, interactions with wildlife, Parks Canada staff and Haida Gwaii Watchmen. These observations will inspire their art, and the works created will help other Canadians learn about Gwaii Haanas.
As a way to share the experience, the visiting artists will lead a pre-trip workshop to share skills or techniques with the local artist community on Haida Gwaii, and later as a group, the artists will give presentations to the public when they return from Gwaii Haanas. A group exhibition will be held at the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kay Llnagaay to showcase at least 2 pieces of art from each participating artist’s Gwaii Haanas experience. One piece from the exhibition will be donated to the Artists in Gwaii Haanas permanent collection after 1 year.

By creating art inspired by Gwaii Haanas and guided by the theme: “land, sea, people connections,” artists can reveal meanings and relationships that complement the scientific, cultural and educational perspectives presented by Gwaii Haanas staff and Haida Gwaii Watchmen. Artists are expected to share their residency experience through diverse networks, museums, galleries etc., in creative ways, using new media technologies, to heighten the profile and exposure of Gwaii Haanas, and form connections that extend beyond Haida Gwaii. *More details are available in Appendix: 1.

*APPENDIX 1: Artists in Gwaii Haanas 2016 – Program Details
During the Gwaii Haanas residency portion of the program, artists will be housed at the Bischoffs, Huxley &/or Ellen Island Operations stations in the remote backcountry of Gwaii Haanas. Billeting is available during the museum residency portion of the program, while on Graham Island. The facilities in Gwaii Haanas are comfortable by wilderness standards. Applicants should be at ease working in this environment, be physically fit and agile enough to get in and out of boats on slippery rocks, hike through the forest and be prepared for potentially cold, inclement weather. A Parks Canada staff member will guide the group and will be responsible for all safety and logistical needs for the duration of the residency in Gwaii Haanas. Part of the project will include keeping a journal of your experience in Gwaii Haanas. It is expected that parts of these journals will be shared at the public presentations, and/or accompany the exhibition.

Transportation and Communication
You are required to cover your own transportation from your home to Skidegate, Haida Gwaii & return. Transportation to/from and around Gwaii Haanas will be by motorized boat. Due to limited space in the boat, art supplies and outdoor gear must be kept modest. Transportation out of camp will be arranged in emergency situations by boat, floatplane or helicopter. Participants will have limited ability to communicate with those outside of the camp. Emergency communication is by VHF radio and satellite phone systems. Internet is not available nor is there cell phone coverage in Gwaii Haanas.
Meals
All food in camp is provided however, meal duties will be shared by the program participants and Parks Canada staff. The food and snacks will be simple but plentiful. Please let us know if you have dietary restrictions.
Safety and Equipment
Due to the remoteness of Gwaii Haanas, emergency access is by water or air only, and an emergency evacuation can take many hours. Participants must fully understand this risk and be able to manage their own health and safety while in Gwaii Haanas. Alcohol is not allowed and smoking is restricted in any buildings and on vessels. It is expected that artists will dedicate full- time hours to artistic endeavors while in Gwaii Haanas and are considered program “volunteers” by Parks Canada. Should you be selected we will ask you to fill out Parks Canada’s Volunteer Forms including a medical information form, a volunteer agreement, and pass an RCMP security screening, to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Artists provide their own personal gear, sleeping bags and art supplies.
*Selected artists will receive further information including a gear list.
