MODERN SNARE DRUM COMPETITION

TOM SHERWOOD - DIRECTOR
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra proudly announces its’

4th annual Modern Snare Drum Competition.




  • The competition will take place in Atlanta, Georgia at the Woodruff Arts Center June 3 - 5, 2011.




  • The competition will be separated into two divisions:

Division I: ages 25 years old and under

Division II: ages 18 years old and under


  • Each Division will be organized into separate rounds with a set list of repertoire

Division I will consist of a Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final round.

Division II will consist of a Preliminary and Final round.


  • The competition jury will include the following members:

Tom Sherwood (Principal Percussion, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra)

Ted Atkatz (Lynn University; former Principal Percussionist, Chicago Symphony Orchestra)

Timothy Adams, Jr. (University of Georgia; former Timpanist, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra)

Marc Damoulakis (Section Percussion, Cleveland Orchestra; DePaul University)

Charles Settle (Section Percussion, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra)

Adam Sliwinski (So Percussion)

Joe Tompkins (Rutgers University, New York Freelance)




  • There will be a $60 (non-refundable) application fee.




  • Application deadline is May 15, 2011. The competition will be limited to 50 applicants. Acceptance to the competition will be based on the order of the applications received.




  • Candidates will be responsible for their own travel and housing expenses. Information will be provided for nearby hotels offering Atlanta Symphony Orchestra discount rates.



Special Event:

Joe Tompkins will present a master class on “A Comparison of French and American Drumming Styles” – free to all applicants.

First Place:

$1,000 cash prize

Pearl Brass Philharmonic Snare Drum

Selection of Drummer’s Service, Evans, Pro-Mark and Zidljian products

Second Place:

$600 cash prize

Selection of Drummer’s Service, Evans, Pro-Mark and Zidljian products
Third Place:

$400 cash prize

Selection of Drummer’s Service, Evans, Pro-Mark and Zidljian products

DIVISION II
First Place:

$500 cash prize

$300 cash prize

$200 cash prize
