Advisory Committee Meeting

Monday, October 26 2016
MINUTES
In Attendance: Dr. Cassandra Renzi, Kaiser University; Serena Besuden, Atlantic High School; Margo Rivera, Atlantic High School; Jeremy Ossler, Atlantic High School; Lt. Lou Marino, VCSO; Lt. John Creamer, DBPD; The meeting was called to order at 6:07 p.m.
Meeting Introduction-Dr. Renzi

Dr. Renzi welcomed our new members to the board and started off a round-table introduction. She highlighted some of the high points of our academy and mentioned how excited she was for this new school year.


General Update- Mr. Ossler

There are approximately 100 students enrolled in the academy this year. The freshman and sophomore classes are full.

Mr. Ossler spoke about the new happenings around Atlantic High School this year, as well as some big things coming up (Move to Wall 2 Wall and the Block Schedule).

Ms. Besuden informed the board and thanked Dr. Renzi personally for getting the much needed textbooks for our Criminal Justice Classes.

Dr. Renzi discussed the success of the Police Explores Day put on by Keiser University in which over 20 ALAG students participated.

Mr. Ossler spoke about a successful summer planning with the new ALAG faculty team. He then spoke of the successful homecoming fundraising. He then expressed the need for guest speakers in the elective classes. Details on the Academy Showcase at the fairgrounds were given. Details on the pasta fundraiser were discussed.



Mock Trial- Mrs. Rivera

Mrs. Rivera gave a synopsis of the new MT case for this year. The coaches this year will be her and Ms. Besudan. She informed the board of how they might be able to assist the team this year.


Comments

Lt. Marino and Lt. Creamer proposed the idea of getting a police cruiser donated to the academy for use in the CJ Courses. They also thought it might be a good idea to name our CJ course like a police dept. and create a logo.

Dr. Renzi mentioned trying to connect with Israel Gonzalez about refreshing our connection with Volusia County Teen Court.

A round-table discussion occurred about possible guest speakers to bring in for the upcoming months.



The next meeting of the Advisory Board will be Jan. 25th at 6:00 p.m in the Atlantic High School Courtroom.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 p.m.
