The Rotary 4 Way Test
of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOOD WILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Four-Way Test is followed by Rotarians worldwide in their business and professional lives and was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932. It has since been translated into more than 100 languages and issued to organizations and individuals throughout the world.
The Object of Rotary
First—The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second—High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third—The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
Fourth—The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Avenues of Service
2014-2015 Committees
Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.

Senior Recognition…………………………….............................Mike Amstein
This program is the recognition of our Atlantic High School Seniors who have excelled in academics, band, vocal music, drama and the art program. Scholarship winners are announced at this time.
Employee Appreciation……………..……………………………….Kate Olson
This is a program where Rotarians invite their employees to be recognized by our Club. Rotarians introduce each invited guest. This gives employees a little more insight into what Rotary is and does.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)…Laura Stuetelberg, Pat Markham
RYLA is a life-changing leadership training program for young men and women where leadership skills and principles are learned, developed and enhanced in an atmosphere of trust and respect. The purpose of RYLA is to encourage and assist current and potential youth leaders in methods of responsible and effective leadership. Rotary clubs in Districts 5970 and 6000, sponsor students to participate in a 6-day leadership conference known as Iowa RYLA. Participant’s expenses are paid by sponsoring Clubs.
EMT/Police/Sheriff/Fireman’s Service Appreciation………....Wendy Richter
A luncheon to honor local Emergency personal for their service’s to our community.
Community Service is the opportunity Rotary Clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.
Watermelon Feed…………………………….Don Reinertson, Dolly Bergmann

New Teacher Recognition ……………………..Michael Amstein Jim Kickland
This is an opportunity to meet and greet the new teachers from the Atlantic Community School District. Each teacher is introduced by their respective principal with a little bio of each one and gift baskets are prepared and presented to each one.
Outstanding Teacher Award- ……Ted Robinson, Kate Olson, Jennifer Plumb
Each year the Atlantic Rotary Club recognizes and rewards an outstanding educator in our public school system who exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” through their continuous dedication to students, parents, peers and the larger community, as well as the art and practice of education. The teacher is nominated by students, peers and others who have been impacted by the teacher’s work, and selected by a panel from the field of education outside the Atlantic Community School District and business and public service representatives from within the community. The $3000 award may be used to enhance the educational resources of the teacher, further the teacher’s education, or for any other purpose which the selected teacher deems appropriate. The honoree is also recognized in front of his/her peers and asked to share their experience with fellow teachers.
Salute to Veterans……………………………....................................Rick Burns
A special time in November where we honor our local veterans who have and are serving our country.
Scholarship selection: ……Jennifer Plumb, Ann Pross, Gary DeGeest, Jolene Roecker
This committee selects outstanding students from AHS to receive the Club’s annual scholarship awards presented at the Senior recognition. The committee needs to make sure the school has all the information regarding the Rotary Scholarships by February.
Promoting Literacy ……………….………………………..Christina Bateman
Rotary International has established March as Literacy month. During the spring our club asks the Atlantic preschool directors to submit list of supplies for the purpose of promoting literacy enrichment. Usually in the fall, Rotarians are asked to volunteer to read at least one time to preschool children. In 2005, a dictionary project began, where during the month of September a dictionary is given to each 4th grader in Cass County. In 2006 the schools of Walnut and Exira were added.
Festival of Trees……………Josh Borer, Kellie Jimerson, Kathie Hockenberry
This committee registers Rotary with the American Cancer Society’s Festival of Trees held in December. The committee selects a Rotary theme, decorates the tree and then takes down the Christmas tree.
Log Cabin Maintenance…………………………...Rhonda Larsen, Brett Holtz
The Rotary Log Cabin in the City Park needs annual waterproofing and some maintenance each year. Recommendations on any repairs needed, will be presented to the Club by this committee and see that repairs are completed.
Auction…………………………………Overall Chairperson-Dolly Bergmann, Dinner Tickets-Paul Gude, Raffle tickets- Haley Kickland, Sale Bill-Dolly Bergmann, Chairperson Emeritus-Mark Smith
This is our only fundraiser and ALL members are expected to help with this event by collecting auction items and helping put the auction activities together either prior to or at the event. The success of the auction is vital for the many projects that need Rotary support. Items can be collected all year as one visits other parts of the country or world and/or makes contacts. The secret is to gather items that are difficult to put a dollar amount on or unusual items. Of course many of the traditional items go well year after year.
Football Game Concession Stand………………..Ted Robinson, Hans Krengel
Volunteering at a Football game in the Concession Stand is another event that we serve our community by helping the Booster Club serve refreshments at a home game, usually in September.
International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world, understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.
Youth/Group Exchange…………………………………………Chad Williams
Rotary International provides a means of exchange for adults and youth, and this committee seeks to make that a possibility for our Club.
Rotary Foundation…………………………………………..…...Ted Robinson
Acting as a liaison between our club and the Foundation, this committee will seek to encourage involvement in the Foundation through the year. Every Rotarian is encouraged to contribute $100 per year. Contributions to the Rotary Foundation funds enable Rotarians to carry out humanitarian and educational projects. Donors may direct their gifts to three main funds: the Annual Programs Fund, which supports the Foundation’s humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs worldwide; the Permanent Fund, which provides and endowment; and the PolioPlus Fund.
International Project……………………………………………..…Rick Burns
The committee will explore opportunities for international projects through the Rotary Foundation and the District network.
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of club activities.
New Member Recruitment…………........................... Duane Acker, Ann Pross
The goal is to challenge and motivate the club to enlist new members and mentor them to become faithful Rotarians. Various activities throughout the year keep membership a priority for the Club.
New Member Orientation .....................................................….. Wendy Richter
The incoming president is included in meeting with the new members to give them an overview of Rotary International and of our Club. This person is assisted by the current or a past president who provides materials for informational reading and helps understand the larger world of Rotary.
Yearbook & Public Relations………………...Dolly Bergmann, William Saluk
These dedicated people ensure that pictures are taken at various Club activities and placed in a scrapbook and newspaper to be shared with the Club throughout the year. Also, an individual takes the pictures to the Atlantic News Telegraph with a story for the public to understand the involvement of the Club in our community.
Club Activities …Three activities are held in which spouses or special guests can come together for a time of eating and fellowship. These events are for families also.
Family Picnic……………………………………...Steve Tjepkes, Russell Joyce
Usually held in August at the Camblin Addition at the top of Sunnyside Park for Rotarians and their families.
Christmas Brunch…………………………………Jennifer Plumb, Jamie Joyce
Celebration for Rotarians and their families is held the Sunday before Christmas at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club. Santa Claus generally arrives while we are singing Christmas carols with gifts for children under age 10.
Family Fun Activity …………………………………………..Board Members
Decided on by all members of the Club and varies from year to year. In the past, a night of bowling has been organized with food and beverages for Rotarians and their families to enjoy.
Community Meals …………………………………William Saluk, Holly Smith
Meals prepared and served to the group who meet at the Catholic Parish Center one time per quarter. Meals are arranged by asking for donations from members of Rotary and or asking for Help with Serving of Meals for those in need.

Scholarships available from Rotary International
Types of scholarships:
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$24,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. They are the most common type of Ambassadorial Scholarships.
Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of $12,000 is provided each year.
Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships help finance either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $11,000 for three months and $16,000 for six months. Funds are intended to offset costs associated with round-trip transportation, language training, and homestay living arrangements. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.
Some Rotary districts may offer only one type of scholarship, or none at all. Applicants must check with their local club about availability. Grants are provided in U.S. dollars or their international equivalent.
